'Toehopo was a mistaken one, however, as the members of the council aro appareutly no uearer reach- ing an agrcement thau they wero u mouth ago, and it is given out cold that no meeting will be heid until the regular one next month, and that very likely no sclection will bo mado even then, ‘The reason for this disposition to let things slide, lies in the fact that the demo- cratic members seo no reason why the should mako a compromiso whereby o repub lican should be given a city oftice when there Is a possibility that by waiti awhile they ~moy secure u democratic ma- jority in tho council and have eovery- thiog their own way. ‘The question of whother Peter Smith is alderman from tho Fifth ward, they say, 18 not decided yot and will not be util Judie Deomer has a chance to hear the arguments of him and his opponent, S. MANY BEAUTIFUL FLORAL DECORATIONS Something the Occasion Teaches—Fxtracts of the Sermons of the Different Ministers ~Splendid the Att Weather Iner a hee—Loenl News, The soft mellow light that streamed through the great windows of the Catholic catliedral, tinted with tha myriad colors of brilliant stained glass, iliuminated an atmosy phere heavy with the fragratce of Baste- litlies mingled with the burning incense from the altar yesterday morning. Every pew was occupied, and many visitors wero present. The venerable Father McMenomy, whose health has been so frail for the past six months, since last fall, but did not sssist in tho services, High mass was celebrated and the regular Kaster services of the church observed. They were conducted by Rev. Father O'Rourke, assisted by Father Latini of St. Bornard’s hospital. The music was onoof the finest and most impressive features of tho service and consisted of Haydo's grand First Mass, Lambillotte's Rogeum Ceolim in addition to tne regular responses of — the choir. A solo by Rossi, O ~Salutarius, was given by Mrs, O'Neill in a very impressivo aud bril lLant manner. The concluding portions of the service was the deitvery of an Ilaster sermon Ly ather Latini based on tho words of the angel to the women who came to seek the Savior attne grave on tho morning of tho resurrection, “There ye shall find him as he told you.” Thio speaker said If thore was one day that tho peovle of America loved and yenerated moro thun auother it was Independenre day, aud ho drew @& strong picture of the en- novliug sentiments that tho celebra- tion of the day iuspired, teaching at every occurrénce profounder ro- gard for the day that struck the shackles from the limbs and proclaimed the liberty of the willions that live now und shall live in the future on the American continent. But there is a grander day whoso celebration iuspires grander aspira- tions and dearer hopes to races of men—Faster—the day when Christ's fin- ished work siruck the shackles of sin from all mankind. *‘I'or more than 100 years we havo been celebrating the one and for more than 1,8000 the other, but the lessons taught by each grow clearec and our love aud veneration stronger with each recurreace,” he said, He could not say otherwise than the truth, even to please his Protestant brethren, when he unnounced anew bis conviction that thero was but one grand and true church, as thero was but one Suvior, one day of redemption and ono declaration of Auwmerican inde- pendence. ““Ihe words of the angel sitting at the de- serted grave cannot fail. Christ canuot be found clsewbhere than in his church. The words of the church reflecting the words of the angel can never fail. The Catholic church does not change.” “He said: *“To day throughout civilization and beyend the nale of civilization, wherever a priest can be found thero nas been heard today the identical words and_syllables that you have heard here. Tho unchanceableness of tho church is a mivaclo not an aim. i am not of those who believed that overy one outside of the Catholic church wiil bs lost. There lhiage been myriads of good meu and women outside tho church from Luther’s time down. 1t is possible that those outside can be saved, All thines aro possivle with Ged. Some know tho consiruction of the Lifebout and what it is for, and launch it and get into it, but others refuse and cling to the burning or sinking wreck, belioving that it will carry them to the shore, Tt is possible that they may be saved, but it isu’t probabie. Christ has told us all we havo to do to avoid the d Hear the church, Beed the church,” First Congregntional Chure! At the Congregational church vesterday morning the pastor, Rev. G. W. Crofts, preached an exceilent sermon, in which ho cnlarged on the idea that 1t 'was not only “Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again.” The joy and comfort of a rison, living Christ were earnestly aud eloguenly por- truyod, Tho church was beantifully” aeco- rated, easter lilies being prominent.” In tho good book which lay upon the puipit, ap- peared the pleasing ecaster gift of Mrs, Dav- ennort, a triple book mark of white satin rib- bons which sho haa beautifully embroidered by her own skill, the designs Leing a cross, a crown and a Maltese cross. Judge Deemer yesterday decided against the plaintiff in the caso of Kverett uguinst tho city of Council Bluffs, thus sddiug an- otber credit mark to the record of tho law department uuder the admiuistration of ox- City Attorney sStewart, During bis term the city has lost but two cases, and the judg: ments do not foot up over 1, The suit decided yesterday was one to prevent 1he l clty from collecubg & sewer tax, Among tbe | Pearon’s, was on tho altar for the first timo | rensons urged against the tax was that it was utfair and illegal to charge up sewerage on both streets in case of a corner lot, for thero was no benefit accruing to the owner, une line of sewerage being suficient. Anothor | claim was that the inlets were not in accord- ance with the plans adopted by the city, and wore not of such a nature that they could bo used. On the other hand, the city city claimed that it had afterwaras changed theso inlets to conform with the plans except ono Iot, the inlets for which had boen changed by the plaintiff at_his own oxpense. Judge Deemer thought that this should not serve to defeat the wholo assessment, but if the piain U had asked to be creditad with what he had exponded in changing the inlits he would probabiy havo decided that bo was entitled to thit much of an offset. So the court ordered thatfthe case bo dismissed at the plaintiff’s cost, none of his claims being deemed sufficient to defeat the assessment. —— “Lato to bed and early 1o iso will shorten the rond (0 your homa in the skies.” But carly to bed and a “Little Early Riser,” the il that makos life louger and better and wiser.
