But tiis plan was not altogether carried out. In some of the schiools the exercises began as early as 1 o'clock, and in others as latons 2, All the schools were crowded with visitors, but the buildings that scemed to attract the most at tention from tho general public were the Washington avenuo ana the Bloomer. Both arc located near tho business center, and the crowds of children and adults flocking nto thew attracted additional attention and drow great crowds of citizens, Much Interest Taken. In the Wasnington avenuo building the excrcises bogun at_1:30, but the fiest part of the program was littlo more than the mar- shaling of the children and getting them ready tomarch ntothe yard in military fashion and watch tho hoisting of the flag oil tho pole that nad been crocted on the roof. The hallways weve almost filled with visitors and when the pupils began to filo into the yard and gazeintently upward the attraction became infoctious and cverybody on the streats for blocks around were drawn me- chanically to the spot and stood with up- turnca faces watching and waiting. Some of the curious crowd in the street forgot what the eveut was to be and gathered the vague impression that there was a fire or somothing equally important transpiring up on the roof. Too %00 pupils filled the yard, und it was a periect ocean of faces that met the gazo of H. H. [ield, n momber of the board, who had volunteered to take churge of the ceremonics on tho housetop, wheu he 1ooked down before he began to pull up the flag. When it beeame visiblo above tne curvature of the roof there arose a mighty cheer and every pupil waved o flag of some proportions as the cheers and the llag went up. After viewing the flag with intense inter- est for somo time, the lines of march wero formed and the pupils marched buck to their school rooms, where the remainger of tho afternoon was spent in_literary avd _musical exercises, witnessed by as large a number of visitors s could crowd into the rooms and the hallways. The exercises were interest- ing and splendidly adapted to enforce the lessous intended. At Other Schools, The spectaclo aronnd the Bloomer building was equally enthusiastic and spiring, and the throng of pupils nnd friends was so denso that the yard was filled, as well as the build- ing, When the flng was unfurled it was enthusiastically saluted by hearty choers and the waving of small flags, c1ses were held in all tho rooms, ana in somo of the rooms prowminent citizens addressed the upils, Pfho’ most important of the exercises, of course, wero held in the Hizh school, whera the ndvanced pupils presented o veried and interesting progra By 2 o'clock every one of the mincteen or twenty school buildings was _decorated with the nutional emblem and in all the rooms the children were holding patriotic exercises, This magnificent tribute of the children to the flag of their country has not, been made without some sacrifice on their part, and this sacrifice gives the event of the day a still greater imporiance, For tho past two weeks tho children have stayed half an hour after school each day anamany of them have taken a largo portion of the time fixed for recrea- tion to prepare for the event, Itissome- thing of sacrifice for boy to give up an hour of playtume each day, and the fact that the teachers all say that' this sacrifice was will- ingly made is the best preof that the object of the demonstration hus been fully attained. ——— The Last Day. It was in chargs of Enginesr James and Conductor Robertson, The train proceeded on its way north without incident, and such a thing as a robbery was not tuought of, and least of all apprehended. When the train reached Hammond station a man boarded tho engine. To the surprise of the engincer and the firoman, the unin- vited passenger thrust into their faces a big gleaming pistol. The railroad men were or- dored to go ahead. The command was oboyed reluctantly, but with seeming good grace. Passengor train No. 2 was scheduled to ineet No. 3 at Independence .and to tako the siding at that pomt. To this little sta- tion, therefore, tho engineer | ilotod his train of human freight, who littie conjectured that their guido was at the time under coercion and upprehension of his own lite, When No, 2 reached Independence, the siding was taken and tho switch barely locked when the southward bound train camo thundering along. Itis not customary for trains to stop at meeting points, and the south bound train procceded on 1ts way to Now Orleans without tho slightest knowl- edge thay the train which they left behind was about to be robbed. Tho south bound train had scarcely flitted by when two men, confederates of tho man on tho engino, skipped nimbly aboard and joined their pal. ‘The engineer was orderad to roverse the en gine, and at Newsom’s mill, about soventy milos from the city, was told to come to & halt. ‘The engincor and fireman were then used by the robbers as a parleying party, and were instructed to £0 to the express car and to order the messonger to open tho car, which was complied with. An entrance into the car, which bears the treasures of the expres company as well as that of Uncle Sam, was then effected by the robbers. The eafo was cmptiod of its contents, Having comploted their work, the knights of the road aisap- neared in the aarkness, leaving the mails and tho passengers undisturbed. The train proceeded on its way north and when it reached Angipaho the news of the robbery was telegraphod back to this cit; Superintendent Iisher of the express com- panv said that the amount carried off by the train robbers would hardly exceed $3,000, in his opinion. Every effort is beiug made by the express and railrond officials and the v 15h ofticials to fercet out the robbers. [ tieated with doctors in various parts of the country, but nono of them could do me any good furthor than giviag my shor temporary relief. 1 suffered night an day. and continued to grow worso not withstanding all the medicine 1 hal tuken. T had almost given up my case as hopeloss whon L wis informed by a friend of Dr. C. Geo Wo, the Chinese doctor, and advised to go and seo him in tho hope of getting relief at loast, if not a permanent cure for my trouble. 1 was slow in making up my mind to make such a radieal chango 1o my troatment, as [ know a teinl with tho Chinoese dod tor would bring me, but T finally cons cluded to give him a tritl, so [ eallod b hisoffice with that intention.
