Blavatsky's Great Work Now, spoaking of clements, it is mgde the standing reproach of the ancients that they “supposed their elomonts sim- ple and undecomposablo.” I'he shades of our pro-historic ancestors might re- turn the compliment to modern physi - cists, now that now discoveries in chem- istry haveled Me. W. Crookes, I\ R.'S, to admit that science is yotn thousind leagues from a knowledge of tho come pound nature of the simplest moloculo, Frown him we learn that such a thing as a roally simple molecule entiraly homo- gencous is torra incognita in chemistry, “Where aro we to draw tho line?” he asks; there no way out of this por- plexity? Must we either make the ele« mentary examinations so stiff that only sixty or soventy candidates can pass, or must wo open the oxamination doors so wide that the number of admissions is limited only by the number of appli- cunts?” And then the learned chemist gives striking instances. Ho says: ‘Take the caso of yttrium. It bas its defl- nito atomic weight, it behaved in every re- spect as o simple body, an element, to which we might fndeed add, but from which wo could not take away. Vet this vttrium, this supposed homogencous whole, ou being sube mitted to a certain method of fraciionatio is resolved iuto portions wot absolutely identical among themselves, and exhibiting a gradation u{rmpflrllns. Or take tho case of didymium. Hero was a body betraying all the recognized characters of an element. It haa been separated with much difficulty from other bodies which approximated closely to it 10 their properties, and during this crucial process it had undergono very severe treat: ment and very closo scrutiny. But then camo another chemist, who, treating this as- sumed homogencous body by a poculiar pro- cess of fractionation, resolved it into the two bodies praseodymium and neoaymium, be- tween which certain distinctions aro per- ceptible. Furthor, we oven now have no certaluty that neodymium and praseody mium aro simplo bodies. On tho contrary, thoy likewise exhibit symptoms of splitting up. Now, if ono supposed element on proper treatment 1s thus found to comprise dissimise lar molecules, we are surely warranted in asking whether similar results might not bo obtained in other elements, porhaps in all eloments, if treated in tho right way. We may even ask where the process of sorting out is to stop—a process which of course pre- supposos variations boetween tho individual molecules of ench species. And in these suc- cessive separations wo naturally find bodies approaching more and moxe closoly to each other. Once more this reproach against the ancients is an unwarrantable sta ment. Their initiated philosophers at any rate, can hardly come under such an imputation, since it is they who have invented allegories and religious myths from the beginning. Huad they been ignorant of the heterogeneity of their elements they would have had no per- sonifications of five, aw, water, earth und wther; their cosmic gods and god- desses would never have been blessed with such posterity, with so many sons and daughters, clements born from und within each respective clement. Alchemy and occult phenomena would have been a deiusion and a snare, even in theory, had the ancients heen ignor- 4 ant of the potentialities and conrelative’, functions and attributes. of overy elo- ment that enters into the composition of air, water, enrth and even fire—tho lat- ter a terra incognita to this day to mod- orn science, which is obliged to call it motion, evolution of light and Leat, state of ignition--defining it by its out- ward aspects in short, in ignarance of its nature. It is a universal tradition that, before the physiological “fall,” propagation of one’s kind, whether human or animal took place through the will of the creators, or their progeny. This was the fall of spirit into generation, not the fail of mortal man. It has alrcady been stated that, to become self-consclous, spirit must pass throvgh every cyclo of being, culminating in its highest point on earth in man, Spirit per se is &n un- conscious negative abstraction. Its purily is inherent, not acquired by merit; hence, as already shown, to be- como the highest Dhyan Chonan, it is necessary for vach Ego to attain full self-consciousness as a human, i. e., con- seious being, which is synthesized for us in man. The Jewish Kabalists, argui- ing that no spirit can belong to th divine hierarchy unless Ruach (spirit)ig™ united to Nephesh (living soul), only repent the eastern Esoteric teaching: A Dhyani bas to be an Atma-Buddhi; once the Buddhi-Manas breaks loose from the immortal Atmn, of which it (Buddhi) is the vehicle, Atman passes into non-being, waich is absolute being. This means that the purely nirvanio state is & passage of spirit buck to tho id abstraction of be-ness, which has no oelation to the plane on whic universe is accomplishing its ey CHAMBERLAIN'S COUGH REMEDY, Superlor to Any Other, Mr. W.
