NO CLEW T0 THE MYSTERY Brokers Anxious to Know Why Uake Shore Took a “purt, MANY HOLD GOULD RESPONSIBLE They Are Equally Anxious to Know Why That Stock Suddenty € wnd Left & Comfortable Maj on Wall Street’s Cur New Yonk, March 6, -|Special Telegram to Tue Bee]—All ordinary calculations were upset by such a market as we aro hav- ing now. It isone of perpetual surprises. The latest has been given by the Lako Shore. Hero is a stock which seemed tho embodi- ment of conservatism. Speculation in it was based on general ideas and its move. ments were therofore slow and steady. Sud denly one afternoon, without any cause that the average observer can discover, brokers rush into the oxchange and buy 1t 50 eagerly that it mounts five points in thirty minutes; next morning it jumps five points moreand then as suddenly falls pack the same amount. Friday morning Lake Shoro sold at 128, 1n the afternoon at 180; Saturday it jumped to 140, then aived back to 1 Such wild movements exceed those of the industrial stock which used to fill people with grave fears about “‘shak- ing public confidenc When people seo such a stock as Lake Shore cutting capers like this it produces something of the samo fecling as might be excited by the sight of a gray bearded, ven- erable man of known staid demeanor all at onco rushing into the street turning hand- springs, climbing lamp posts and jumping over apple stands. Oue looks on amazed and inguires the oause. Shrouded In Mystery. It Is o mystery, the latest the strect has been treated to. Somebody has the key to it, that is certain, for the brokers must have received their ordors from some source. Rumors that a ‘“melon was to be cut’ sprang up on all sides, but no one seemed to know what melon it was to be or why the cutting of it should have been de- cided upon Friday morning. Michigan Central rose about eight or nine points also; is thero to be a melon in the way of scrip dividend or some other extra distribution that stock also! Another report was that it was due to a large order to buy the stock “at the market,” as tho technical term is to cover shorts, and the order was said to come from Mr, Gould, who had determined to close a long standing short account he had in the stock. No one elso that Wall street knows of would givean order like that except Mr. Gould. Hence, when the rumor spread that the buying was to cover shorts, Mr. Gould was naturally thought of as a man who was short. When the stock broke back after touching 140 and the whole market slumped, the excited brokers had it that Mr. Gould was dead—died suddenly in his private car. The wits of the exchauge divined the cause immediately —he had been told the price of Lake Shore and it kitled him. What Caused Gould's Action. Supposing it to be true that Mr. Goula was short and had ' determined to cover at any cost, what was his reason for doing 1it! Had he received sume information which decided himf Supposing there was no truth in these stories, und the suddon capers in Lake Shore were merely clever manipulation, mado possible by the small amount of stock after that in the street, then it might be as- sumed that the price will collapse even more qu‘lukly than it rose. But this is not so cer- tain, It is obvious that the Vanderbilt holdings of the stock have not come upon the market or the price could never have risen to 130, to say nothing of 140. It follows, therefore, that at any price vet made for the stock theso largo holders are not willing to sell. This argues an iden of the value of the prop- erty, which may yet put it to the prico of Lackawauna, Some ono, how- ever, took the opportunity afforded by the excitement in Lake Shore to unload o considerable quantity of Reading and doubt- less such suporfluous amounts of other coal stocks which large msiders were willing to let outsiders bave. have been coming on the market lately while public atiention was at- tracted to the great strength of the Vander- bilt stocks. It is a novel sonsation to the street to have Lake Shore enveloped in mystery, but mystery seems tho fastion now. Delawaro & Hudson was cuveloped in one a week agoand those who started it were greatly entertained at the case with which it ¢an be done in theso umes. The stock shich is peronnially enveioped in mystery now is ew England. An o‘wrllor who has had BOme experionce in theso things says he uever handled u stock which responded so readily to manipulations. Easy to Care for Miltions, There are only $:0,000,000 of it, g0 the amount afloat any time is easy to take care of; one-half the people beliove it 1s worth- less, the other half that it will be of great value some day, through the rivairy of the nelghboring weaithy companies of the prop- erty. So conditioued, New England can bo worked to a charm, either on the bull or bear side according to the general temper of the market, The gencral tempor now is bullish, strongly s0; hence there is nothing surpris’ ng io the fact that New England has been put through auother of its mysterious phases, enabling some one on the inside to unload a considerable block of the stock at satisfactory prices. Nor is it at all unlikoly that after a period of rest the stock will be brought back again and another bull turn made, 1t is & mine of gold when properly han- dlea so long as the road is not leased by any of its more powerful neighbors, lcasing would remave the stock from the speculative arena. For the coming week we are tola to buy all the Vanderbilts, including North- westorn; to buy Erie; also St. Paul, which holds its dividena meeting Thursday. There Is to be notop for Vanderbilt stocks. One can believe almost anything after Lake Shore's porformances. The industriul stocks are quite distanced. They bave become tame beside the gyrations of the heavy dividend payers among the railroads. Never were bull ?nlutn thicker in Wall street than they were Friday and Saturday. The air was dark with scrip dividends, privileges, rights, distribution of surpluses, new combi. nations, increased dividends, guarantoes and tho rest of it. Tue concern, however, seems to find its reorganization road hard travel- ing—the Richmond Yermnal, 1t 18w Big Deal, The new scheme appears to be in & bad way. Mr. Olcott will have to look out or his reputation for success as & rooreanizor will receive u fatal blow, It will be said of him thai ho underestimuted the size of the con- tract he took in hand, which is a bad thing to have said of & man in bis position, The Terminal securities fell while the rest of the market was going up and as for tho 5 per cent bonds they took a header of about ten points in two days. When the whole list dropped back Saturday in the last half hour it was doubtless due to a knowledge that the bank statement just about to come out would bo bad. It showed the surplus re-. erve to be decreased 5,600,000, while the loans were increased nearly §5,000,000. The deposits had increased only $1,600,000, so the loss in surplus was due to the loans, This ives us some idea of the amount of securi- ies coming to us from abroad and the nu- merous dellveries of stock in ten-share cer- tificates, and of bonds with the Euglish rev- enue stamp on them are indisputable evi- dence to the same effect, London seems to be inexhaustible; it sells, and sells, and keeps on ulllng. But brokers who do an active foreign business report that there are ocertain llgn- now that the bottom is about reacheda. Stocks are getting scarce for delivery on the otber side, ‘That tells the story. Soon they will find their market bare of Americans.” ‘'hen must come the turn and London will pegin 10 buy back some of the securities she h: Eound upon us so persistently, This is a ull point—merely one in the @eneral crop of them. We are prepared for suything after such events as Lthose of the last week, and merely usk, what next! FOREIGN FINANCIAL REVIEW. A financial crisis in the Muriettas affairs {8 thereforo imminent. It awas reported yesterday that the bills wore roturned and that the holders are about to apply to the accounts for the winding up of the firm. The putting an end to the pro- tracted susponse regarding tho fate of the firm will be u positive relief, financiers thus gotting rid of an uncertainty long impend- fng. Tho frosh dovelopments in the coal panic had an influence in checking business aud especially in British railway securitios, in which there was a genoral fall for the week of from & per cent to il§ per cent, American railway securities experienced spurls of activity’ with intervals of quiet. The course of aoalings showed that Noew York was buying and the English public for the most part selling. Although values were chiofly sustained by Wall street orders, considerable buying on English _account procoeded in Vandorbilt stocks, the chief favorite being New York Central shares, the demand for which was aimost sensational, Variations for the week in prices of American railway securitios in- ude the following: Incroases—Lake Shore, % per cent; Donver & Rio Grande, pre- ferred, 11y por cent: Erie, ordinary, 2 per cent; Denver und Rio Grande, common, 137 por cent; Union Pacific shares, 11¢ per cent} Atchison, income, Notthern Pacific and Louisvilio & Nashville, 1 per cent each; Atchison, Central Pacific shares, New York. THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS. There Was a Decidedly Bearlsh Feellng In Wheat Yesterday, OICAGO, TIL, March 5.—There was a decld- edly bearisn feeling in wheat during most of the sesslon und lower pricss. The news pre- sontod u sharp contrast with that which was ¢lven out so freely yestorday. The bulls hardly got a sinzle ftem in thelr favor, and the suspicion which started suying that trade nbad beeu vleverly decelved by munufactured intolligence was strongly felt. Tho manu- facturers who were represented as buylng so vigorously only yesterday, and the damage to crops which thoy represonted as so alurming, were sourcely mentioned today. On the con- trary. dullness and apathy seemed to prevail everywhore. Amidso much that wus bearish itisdifficult to say what was the most de- pressing, but the moager exports from the sou- hourd for the week—only 2203000 less than for u long time—was very discouragiug. The fact thut much wheat wis cloared from the seabourd yestorday was anothor bearlsh item.
