DELAWARE & HUDSON DIT IT auer 8 Flat Week in Stocks Thore v as an Fiseitinr Olosa, QUOTATIONS ACVANCED RAPIDLY Reports That the Control of the ¢ Uad Passed to the ¥ Caused the Flurry—Gold and Sllver Balances. mpany nnsylvania New Yonk, Feb. 98, —[Spocial Telegram 0 Tne Bee|—After a flat week oan ‘he Stock exchange, with oparations confined in the main to the chusing of eighths b, the room traders, a little oxcitement was stirred ap by the suaden advancs of Dalaware & tHuason. It reqaires little buying or selling of this stock to move quotations several points up or down, because there is so little stock afloat, but on this occasion tho buying 5f the stock was a lvancad by the report that the control of the company had passed to the Ponnsylvania Kailroad company, thus making & now combination against the leading combination. It was fur- ther stated that the Delaware & Lackawanna directors were to meet the Ponn- sylvania directors tomorrow. Ofticial denials that anything has been done ov 18 contemplated ure plontiful, and emphatic, but tho value ot official denials is well under. stood 1o Wal'l streot. The tapo 1ndicates that there Is somathing on foot aud that is the surest test. What the Map Shows, A glance at the map shows that tho Ponn- sylvunia and the Delaware & Hudson ayste are naturally conjoined. The former ruus up to Wilkesbarre, aad the latter down. The Delaware & Hudson sytem is to tho Pennsylvania like the hand with out- stretchod tingers at the end of the arm, Thore may be nothing in this story. Another stock in greav demand is Denver preferred, most largely held abroad, but on account of the sudden development of the new mining camps, waking extremely valua- ble certain portious of the road heretofore of nttle account, 1t is now actively called for in the market. The coming week we aro promised the issue of the Richmond Terminal reorganiza- tion scheme. It will probably be publishe March 1. Thereis & growing feeling that it will be a success because, first, it is most lib- erally underwritien, and second, it is fair to all interests and there is no other to take if this is rejected. Its acceptance cannot make the holders of the prasent securitivs worse off and the chances are in favor of making them & ereat deal better. Disinterested persons, well qualified to judge on such matters, ex- press themselves most favoravly impressed by the plan. They say it 13 both skillful and equitable, and on this account tuey autici- pato that it will be successful. Worrying Over Gold and Siluer. The street is worryiug itself not a little over ¢old and silver. Over the former be- cause it is being exvorted as customury at this time of year; over the latter because it has fallen 50 low in price, and unloss some thing can be done to support it, threateus to fali lower. Besides this, there 'is a fear that it will drive out gold aud turn our standard of value. The question is, what is to be done to help sustain the price’ of silveri It is a possible thing that as the value of goid is made, not by intrinsic qualities in the metal—aud there- foro unlike wheat, which is valuable everywhere for food—but by the common consent to consider 1t valuable, and where that consent dues not exist among savages it has less value than iron or copper. 1t is a possible thing that silver may also be made more valuable by consent, or conveation, among the greav commercial nations of the world. If all tha great nations united in de- olaring that so many ounces of silver should be considered the equivalent of so many ounces of gold and should be reccived at the mints of each for coining into money at the same ratio, the price of the same as metal could be maintained at the ratio so estaciished. But to be thoroughly effective the consent must be‘as wide us the use of silver1s wide, The international monetary convention, which it is prposed to briog about if possibje, is & step in 8 divection where & solution of the proolem may e found if fouud at all, but the extremities are still clamoring for the free conags of silver, and thereby worrying Wall strcet and gen- erally the business commuaity of the eastern part of the country. Piling up Stlver. Meantime we go on piling up & mountain of silver in the United State treasury a bulk 80 hugh that its growth aarms the com mercial world, and we export our gold as usual. The “balauce” of trade arguments are nowhere. There is no “'‘balunce of trade, ascortainable by any statistics we command. They are the roturns of morchandise exports and imports, but nothing more. Bul see what reimportation of a few of our securties will do in the way of of sottiug merchan- dise exports, taking todays quotatious for both securties and merchandise: Drexen Morgan and Co. ex- orts say 2,000 shares of New York ‘entral that 'offsets the exports of 250,000 bushels of wheat. The house of I. S. Woun- sers import 5,000 Erie; that offsets the export of about 5,000 bales of cotton. Hollgarten & Co. import 5,00 Reading; that offsets the ex- port of about 325,000 busheis of col Such amounts of securities are tho merest trifie in the transactions of tho market. We have nothipg to show when they go. The rate of exchange is the only true exhibition of the s‘balance of trade.” At this time it tells us hat Europe has sold us enough of our secur- jties to offset the excess of merchandise ®x. ports over imports, aud the balance will Pprobubly be settled by the export this spring of from §15,000,000 10 §20,000,000 in gold. Trade opened extremely dull, and for atime prices hoid quite stendy, close to the closin : fizures of yesterdny. But the low grades all grew wonk and when a few items of bearish news were collected tho bulls were stamped and prices droppea. Cables were somewhat con- Hicting, somoe private aiviees quoting dullness and lower prices, while others said the market was holding its own. The reular Board of Trade cable was steady and firm. The gen- eral business, however, was very dull and the trade seemcd hesitating und atious with timidity the most notable character- Istle. The return flow of money to the interior Isobviously fore- shadowed fn the decrease of funds, In fact, wi.hout gold experts, and even without loss throuzh subtres- ury operations, the statement would have shown decreased reserve. Prob- ably this movement will continue and nobody need be alurmed at its continuance. The enorious glut of idle money in the New York bunks during the last two months his been no propitious sign.
