A suit for a divorce was commenced in tbe district court yesterday by William Foster aguinst his wife, May Fostor. He alleges that they were married in 1856 at St. Joseph, furnishing light, power and beat, was the subject of a great deal of interested dis- cussion yesterday. At first there was some disposition to condemn the oouncil for the haste in passing the ordinance, but after the charter was examined there could be no reason found for continuing the criticism. Mr. Stewart was compelled to answer a Rgreat many questions during the day con- cerning the character and aim of the new onterprise, “I simply asked the privilege of the city to do something, and that 1s all there is to it,"" said he to Tur Bre. “‘There was no oc- casion for haste and there was no occasion for delay. The privilege I asked was similar to many others that have been granted by the city, many to parties who have never used the rights jconferred. The charter granted me 1s as plain and simple as tho English language can be made, and contains nothing ambiguous or concealed. A letter was published by a morning paper purporting to be the statement of Mrs. Fos- ter, the wife of the missing man. the sub- stuuce of the letter being that Foster was away on business and that she wished thoy would give up hunting for him. Instead of Mrs. Foster's signature, however, that of Joseph Butler, the hired man who slept in the greenhousé, was ap- pended to it, and that fact tended to discredit the statement contained 1n 1t. Minds That Moeet at Adopt a New Name, There was a large amount of enthusiasm distributed about tho Lininger gallery last evening, the occasion calling out the interest being the annual election of officers of The Club, But previous to the event of the evening a determined effort was made to change the name of The Club to something more definite than the one which has passed current for three years. Ono faction contended that the organization haa slready taken a place in the literary life of the city, una in keeping with that prominence should have a dignifiea pat ronymic. . Another faction, equally as en- thusiastic, contended for the old name be cause the name had grown to be a household word with those who were members and tho friends of the organization. And so the battie Bright Lininger's was waged, but after repeated ef forts, through Chairman Snyder, who gave the deciding vote, tho name was changed to the Live Issud club, and as such hereafter the association of men which meets at tho Lininger gallery fortnigntly will be known. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Wililam F. Baxter; first vice president, J. B, Sheehan; second vice presi- dent, E. O. Snyder; third vice president, C S. Eigutter: secrotary-treasurer, John Wi son Battin: executive committee, Dean C. H. Gardner, ex-officio cnairman; F. L. Hailer, A. . Jonas, W. F. Baxter, J. B. Shcehan, John Wilson Battin, E. H. The duchess, who had issued 220 invita- tions for her ball, proposed to recall them when she heard that Napoleon’s army was advancing. But the duke of Wellington, to prevent alarm, requested that the ball might take place. Never- theless, mady Inglish families were frightened away from Brussels, and post horses were kept harnessed in the duke of Richmond’s stable, in case bad news from the scene of the conflict should muke it advisable for his chil- dren 10 be sent to Antwerp, The majority of the people of Brus- sels were violent Bonapartists and were prepared toentertain Napoleon in great - badly style should he force the British army to retreat and enter their city in triumph, So it was that the duke of Wellington and many of his officers went to the ball ufter the business of the day had been attended to. ‘While the merry couples were flying around, a dispatch from the front was handed to Wellington. He asked the duke of Richmond for a private 100m where he might consult with some of his gencrals who were present. The duchess’ dressing-room was the only convenient room which was safe from intrusion, Candles were hastily lit on the dressing table, at which Wellington sat with a map before him, and having explained certain points to his staff they all rejoined the company. They left the house before 10 o’clock, and succeeded in doing so without attracting any atication. Very few, if any, of the dancers guessed how near at hand was the crisis which was to decide the fate of Europe, and it never entered into the heuas of the young girls that some of their purtners were dancing the ‘‘dance of death.” = About midnight the general officers were quietly warned and disappeared from the room.
