The grand jurors stolo a march on the pub- lic whon they indicted Al Ward, an ex-city detective, and ~Morltz Golden, a pawn- broker. Thore were but few men outside of the jury who kuew that tho case was, being worked up. Consequeutly the spoctators about tho court room were treated toa gen- uine surprise when the two men, in the cus. tody of Sheriff Bennett, wore taken before Judge Davis yoesterday morning to vlead to an indictment which charged them with having robbod Sam Snyder, another pawn broker, of §1,6 Tho indictment, which contained five counts, was read to the men, and to eacli count thoy pleaded not guity. Bail was fixed in the sum of §2,500 and the pris- oners remanded 1o jail. The indictment charges that on December 30, 1801, the defendants, Al Ward and Mortz Golden, by putting the pluintifl, Sam Snyder, in fear of great bodily harm, stole from bim $300. Again, ou January 2 by tho samo pro cess, they obtalned 17 This w reveated on January 3, when they got §65. On January 4 thoy made anotber haul, getting $600. The ext raia was made on January 10, when they got the bulauce of Sam's wealtn, 812 Wanted to bea Bandit, The facts leading to tho robbery wore pub- lished shortly after Snyaer was relieved of his wealth, Larly in January the dotective called upon Mr. Snyder and told him in strict contigdence that thora was a gang of train robbers in the party and that they were woing to dou job that'would pan out §0,000 or &0,000. He also informed Mr. Snyder that if ho so de sired, he (Snvder) could get in on the ground tioor and assist in disposing of tho swag. To Mr. Snyder’s discreait at the time and his present intense grief, it must be said that he jumped at the chance like a pickerel at o minnow, but for which he would be a ricter man toduy, and this story would never have been written, Snyder was ouly 100 willing to go into the schome, and without a thought f.the future exceptof the golden reward that he expected it to bring, hio promptly do- livered himself into tho hands of the Philis nd Ill\oru ropresented by the do- aid. ad by the dotective to a room, the location of which shall for tho present v main a seeret, and was thers confronted by six masked men, who were introduced to him as the train robbers by whoso operatious he expected to benefit. He took the Oatl He was given to understand that he mus be initiated, and all througa tho night the in- itiation cerémonies wero continued. Suyder was made to tako the most wondorful und hair curling ouths, but he stood the ordeal without a murmur braced up by the hopo of future reward. Some time after dayhght tho hidden trap was sprung. Snyder was told that he would have to contribute $3,000 for his membership in the gang. m pro- tosted, as ouly o man with an iunate pen- chant for money should protest, that ho hadu't a dollar or earth, but it was of no use. The game was too stroug for him. He was given to understand that he had money on deposit at the Omaha Natonal bank and that he must draw it out for the benelit of the gang. Snyder was held a prisoner ur.til the batk opened at 9 o'clock when he was taken under guard to 2o and draw tho money. Three of the roo- vers, for such they proved to be, only on a different scalo from whatthe victim had been led 10 believe, showed huge revolvers, while a fourth exhibited a big bottle of stuff that he called dynamite, but which might have been an explosive or it might not, and told Snyder that if he made a move other than as he was directed, the bottle would be dropped and Saminy’s soul would bo wafted to the angels, Under these circumstances Mr. Suy der became 1n the custody of his cantors as passive as clag in tho hands of a_moulder, and he marched to the bank like a little man, drew his check for §2,100, bad it cashed and turned the money over to his interesting ac quaintances.
