The news was mostly of a bearish char acter. British cables were unchunged. but continental markets were lower, followed by British markets Inter. The receipts in the northwest and here inafeated a little freer movement. The eatimate of the Agricultural department of North Dakota made lnst sea- #on's wheat crop of that state amount to 4,700,000 bu., or wbout 12,600,000 bu. more than he government estimate. Pardridge added his mite by free selling during most of the session. Al of these things gave the market a heavy look around the opening and there wius freo selling by the tired longs with only a mcderate demand. Schwartz-Dupee sold gencrousty on thelr weak continentul cables. Private New York advices reported exports dolng very Jittle and the acceptances on cabie offers ex- tremely light. Logan, Milmine-Bodman and Kennett-Hopkins were good buyers. After a erlod of dullness and_weakness the market kl'lll to show some nervous strength. It was reported that the export business at the seu- bourd wowing evidences of revival, that nenrly 500,000 bu. of wheut and flour wis cleared yestordny and that thirty-ine boat Tonds had been taken at New York und other ports today.. This started enriy sellers to coverlux and there was a quick rally but the advance brought out free selling again and another period of weaknoss followed. Then the crowd grew nervous.and bought ugain, sending prices up to_outside figures, but the adyunce did not hoid and there was another Inpsennd wenkness which continued to the end of the session nnd the murket closed easy neariy at botton: figures, The Inte cables were ail lower and a dispatch from New York said there was ubsolutely no demun for freight room and that several ves- sols hud bought whout to make up cargoes. 1t looked as If nows was being manufactured for the purpose of see-sawing the market. NEW Youk, Jan 20.—The stock market again showed the effects of continued hammering by the bears and thelr allies, the traders, but a firm temper wus maintained during the greater portion of the day and notwithstand- ing the pressure of the professional eiement, prices ylelded only slightly and even in the speciiities, which wore marked as particularly vulnerable, few show losses of moment. The toreigners were both buyers uud sellers in the market, Louisyille & Nashville belng specially pressed forsale by forelgn houses and that stock 1s the only one of the usually active tailroad shares which scored any material 10ss for tle any. The selling, how- ever. had more of the appearance of profes- slonal prossure for effect upon the rest of the market than of genuine liguidation of long accounts und the slight fufluence which it had on tho rest of the Iist indicated the tem- per ot bolders in kencral. As usual of late, ew stocks monopolized the marked moves, and while a few were vory strong others were equally as weak. The feature of the fore- noon'strading was the unusual activity and strenzth in Denver & Rio Grande preferred, which scored’a handsoms advance and held it throughout the day. Rumors were aflont to account for the movement that the road was about to become u part of u new through line, but it Is under- stood that the affairs of the company are now In better shape than for years and the time has come for a movement in _the securities of the roud. Luckawannu was also a strong po'nt, but its prominence in the market has been heavily d2minished during the last two duys, The movement in Manhattan seems to- have reached its limit and that stock further retired duclng the day while among the specialties Edison Electric oamo to the front with a large ndyance on light trading. The.wenkest stock, however. was Distlllers, which steadily fost’ground all day long and showed increased animation on the deciine, The rest of the market was quiot all day and traded in within narrow limits. The cluse was guiet and steady to @rm at losses in most stocks.
