Jan, 22,—The British steamer Egyptian Monarch, from New York, whence she sailed January 5, reported thaton the wmorning of January 16, the steamer then be- ing in latitude 48 north, longitude 10 west, she sighted a wooden vessel apparently of American build on fire and burning furiously. Judging from the dense black smoke and tho odor, Captain Irwin came to the conclusion that the burning vessel was laden with oil. As the steamer approact.ed the burning craft two men could be seen clinging to the bow sprit. Alife boat on the stemmer was hasuly cleared away to rescue these iwo mon, but before 1t could be lowered, the bowsprit fell and the two men was precipitated into the sea. Efforts were made to find them, bat they were nov afterwards seen. Captain Irwin thought it probablo that tho boats of the burniug vessel were in the meighborhood, and re- mained near the spot until duybreak in hope of picking them up. A heavy sea was running at the time, and it is more than likely that if the crew had managed to get y from their vessel they were drowned by the capsizing of the small boats. st Rulnfall In Four Years, SAN Axtonio, Tex., Jan, 22.—Advices from Durango, the center of the drouth-stricken recion of Mexico, says it has boen raining thoro steadily two days, and the downpour still continues.
