The distinctive social event of a rather quiet woek in the realms of fashion was the reception given by the ladios of the Millara Thursday from 2 until 5 o'clock. Tue day was oo ideal one and the maids and matrons of the haut monde embraced the opportunity to meet the leaders of social life for the first time since the holidays. Tho pariors and adjoining rooms on the second floor of the hotel were magnificontly e decorated with palms, ferns and smiinx, while immense rose bowls, filled with roses, Christmas lilios and other hothouse flowers, aaded their wealth of color to wn iuspiring scene, made doubly so by the presence of beautifally costumed women. Refreshmonts were served in the rooms off vie ordinary and w on an elaborate scale, much more 50 than is usual at an afternoon affair such as this was, Notting was spared by Mr. Swobe, who tondered his reception” to the ladies who make the Millard their home, and from be- gloning to end the aftornoon was crowded with pleasure, There bave been many beautiful balls and parties at the Miilard in times past, but none of them have oven equalled the recoption of Thursday last. During the hours of the re- ception Omaha’s four hundred graced the occasion by their presence, the abscence of stiffness ana formality oveing particularly remarked. Mrs, Swobe were a most beautiful costume of black lace and turquoise eilk, decollete and entraine in addition to supurb diamonds. Mrs. Carter, who is always one of tfie best dressed of ' tho women, wore yellow bro- :ado and crepe trimmed with eut jot passe- menteria and black ribbons, Mrs. Dietz, whose gowns always atiract attention, wors 8 becoming costume of red silk combined with black net. Mrs. An- drow ~ Rosowater wore a handsomo im- ported toilette of m: colored silk, combined with green, heavily embroid- ered with pearls. Mrs. Coffman was gowned in black silk with jet passements Mrs, Muir, a strikingly pretty woman, was lovely fn an old rose and white silk, the bodice be- ing ornamentsd with pink.’ Mrs. Ritchie, whoso first introduction it was to many of the Omaha fair sex, was prettily arrayad in black not. The thivd prize fell to Miss Mellona Butterfield, a pen and ink skotch in the shape of a banver, The Consolation prizo was carried away by Mrs. Jeckwith, The floral decorations were smilax, roses and carnations, but the most attractive dec- orations were the beautiful paintings and ketches which covered every available pace of the walls, the work of the artistic 0toss. Soldiers. The Omaha Guard’s armory presented a very gala appearance last Monday eveuing, being the regular monthly inspection drill. after which an informal dance was indulged . The drill of the company did credit to the Omata Guards and the city of Omaha, arousing the patriotic feelngs of ali present. The Gatling gun section deserve greal praise for their excellent work, it being the feuture of the evening. Tho committee on arrangements, Sergeant W. B. T. Belt, Corporal Frank J. (. Mec- Koon, corner of Grange and Kip streets, on the occasion of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Fully 250 invitations wero ex d, but many wero unable to accept on junt of the provalence of la grippe. Not- hstanding this the rooms wore tarongod with guests and scores of lotters of regret and congratulations wero received, many of them coming from Omaha, the former home of Mr. and Mrs, McKoon. The rooms were handsomely decorated, the parlors hung with smilax, ferns and graceful pepper boughs studded with white roses, The cozy littie study at the right of the hall was a charming nook with its ar- tistic decorations in yellow. & network of smilax falling like a veil over the window draperies, The dining room was briliiant with scarlet blossoms ina setting of groen. The bride of twenty-five years, on whose bright face time has lingered lightly, wore an elezant ovening dress of dull biue, en traine, with meshes of soft lace about the trhoat. During the evening the busy hum of con- versation was hushed long enongh to listen to & fino piano solo by Mrs. Hillman, & song by Mrs. H. L. Hawyer, whose glorious voice filled the house with melody, and a duet beautifully sung by Mmes. J. H. Book and W.H Bea .. Rev. R. S. Cantine, for five years the pastor of the host and _hostess, was present and made one of his characteristic speeches full of pleasantry, at times eliciting peals of laughter from the guests as ho referrod to the rhyming tondencigs of the groom, etc. Turning at length from this lighter vein, in a fow earnast words ho expressed on behalf of himself and the company gatheved tne high esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. McKoon are held. He concluded his remarks by uniting agan in marriage the couple who for twenty- fivoyears have lived together in harmony, cing some extraordinary propositions decidedly fn favor of the bride, who choer- fully assented, but which met with mute re- monstrance from the groom, who'shook his head rather doudtfully. A beautiful collection of Hawaiian Island ferns in a silver frame, gathered and pressed by a friend in Honolu- lu, and a picce of linen woven eighty-four years ago and etched by an aunt of the host 8BS years old, wore valued gifts, Refreshments were served from a hand- somely laid table in the diningroom to the guests who were seated about the room, a cotorie of pretty young girls, friends of Mr. and Mrs. McKoon, deftly serving the dlica- cies, all of which were prepared under the personal supervision of the hostess. The beautifvl and 1mpressive marringe cere- mony of the Episcopal church was performea by Rev. Mr, Lloyd, rector of the Church of the Good Shopherd, after which the con- gratulations of tho ussembly wero showoered upon the newly wedded couple. The bride, who 1s a handsome brunotte, was gowned in a graceful and dainty costume of Nile greon silk crape with ostrich feather trimming and diamonds, and carried a cluster of bride's voses carolessly tied with white cibbons, At 8:3) the party repaired to the dining room, where a aelightful wodding supper was served.
