In all the other braunches of its busiuess Tug Br and Examiner agency performs all preliminary work frec and askis uothing for work of any kind unless successful. Tuo scitlor whoso land patent is delayed, tho veteran who de- res a pension or an increase in one, or the sufferer from (udian depredations can com- mand the besy services of the bureau with the certainty that there will be nothing to pay unless the allowanco of his cluim makes payment easy. nd Im overished by Sh-rks One widow, who i sulfored hoavy losses from the Indians, wrote to the oflice yester- day sayiog that she had a just claim for £,000, which bad beon peading for years, but that sho had impoverished herself in - paving attornoys fees and had_finally been com velled to promise to pay 5) por cont of the claim if collected. She was discouraged and bad ceased to expect justice. 1f this swindled woman had entrusted her claim to the bureau in the first place she would not had to pay a single cent until the gov ment had pat up the monoy, aad then the would not_have had to givd over 15 per cout at the outskle and probably much less, Foriunately it was not too lato for her to avail herself of the advantage. Sho could not get back the money she had alrcady paid, but sho could refuse to be robbed of auy ‘more, The Indian Doprodation act of Marcb 3, cancels all coutricts pre- with attorneys and leaves o free to cmploy anybody thoy please at rates limited by law. Krom present indications the act will be uiilized by almost all the sufferers it was intended to beuefit. Out of 6,500 depredation casos ou file in the Indian bureau, 6,500 have already been preseuted to tho court of claims undor the new law. These, of course, are only a small part of the number on file before the committee of tho house aud senate and clsowhere, but it is probable that bofore the legal limit expires almost all the claimants entitled to tako their cases before the court will havo excreised their rights. They merely neea to rememver the availablo time is needed. Bogin Your Action at O After March 3, 1592, no more Tndian depre- dation claims can be entered. It will not do, therefors, for the people who have suffered damages to put off action iudefinitely. The safer course is to write to the burcau of claims at once and huve their cases put in trim for an early settlement. The same may bosaid of pensiou claims. The nct of Juno 27, 1800, under which most of the pouding claims are being filed, doos not per- mit the payment of arrears. Delays in filing apolication therefore entail u aead 10ss to tho applicant, The man who puts off filing his claim until 1893, when he might have filed it in 1891, loses his pension for two years. T Ber and Examiner Bureau is haudling thirty or forty peusion cases a day, but there are thousands of veterans entitled to b on the volls who have never yet applied. Sowo of them, no doubt, have hesitated from a feeling that the process of sccuring pension was slow and uncertaio, whilo there would be neavior oxpenses from the outsot could well meet.
