HOW T0 SECURE:A PATENT. Direotions to Inveutors Issnad by The Bee Burean of Ol s, THE PATENT OFFICE, METHODS OF The Course Followed by the Author of Inyention to Protect His Rights—Costs of Obtaine & a Patent. To the inventor the all important question prosents Itself, “How can I secure a patent!™ and to this Tie Bee Burenu offers the fol lowing explanation Inventors as a class are not familiar with the laws under which letters patent aro granted, the forms and practice in the patent ofiice at Washiogton and the technical methods of casting specifications and claims to properly protect their inveutions against fnfringers, yet the value of the patent and even its valiaity depend largely upon the careful and expert preparation of the case. Specifications must be drawn to fully dis close the invention, to distinguish between what is new and what is old, and claims, upon which tho value and validity of the patent depend, must be cast to fully cover the fuvention yet not to encroach upon pat- ents alr grantea, Failure in either of theso respects often renders the patent valuo- less orvoid, The employment of counsel skilled in patent law 1s therefore usually a prevequisite to the proper prosecution of a case and a grant of a valuable patent. Many inventors suffer the loss of that should be derived from valuable tions owing to insuflicient protection ¢ ets procured through incompetent or less ageuts, For What Grante Under the laws of the United Statos let- patent are granted to any person who has invented or discovered any new and use ful ar., machine, manufacture or composition of matter, or has invented any new or useful improvement thereon. Term of Patent. A patent is granted for seventeen during which time the owner has solo and exciusive right to make, uso and scll the patented invention, How to Proceed. Fo reconomic reasons before making ap- plication to the patent oftice for a patent, the novelty and patentability of the inven tion should be ascertained, because, if the nvention is not new or not patentuble an unnecessary expense is ncurred by filing an application on whicli a putent can never oo granted, ete, The first thing to be 'done is to find out whether or not the invention is mnow and patentuble. For advice on the point it is necessary to seud to the bureau a rough or completo sketch or aphotograph of the invention, to- gether with a brief description thereof, sctting forth the object of the improve- ments, the arrangement of the parts and the advantages attained. While a modei is very seldom necessary, yet it is often of greut assistauce. The lattor can be made of any cheap material, ar.d will be returncd if a request is made to that effect. Upon receipt of the data mentioned suffic- ientto enable the invention to be understood our counsel will at once examine thereiuto, and will advise without chargo what is the best_course to pursue and will express an opinion, from their knowledge of tho arts and patents already geanted, s to the patent- ability of the invention. Tn this connection it is recommended that tho best und safest course is to have a special _search made in the patent offico to ascortain whether or not the invention has been heretofore patented. The advantago of such a search is that if noanticipatinz patent is discovered tho application can b filed with « greater decree of cortainty. whoroas if the invention 1s found to be old all further ex- pensois avoided. The costof a search of this uature is &, and_with the report of the result thereof the inventor will_be furnished with copies of such £ any, as cm- brace his ideas, It is 0 have this search made in the outset before ineur- ring any expense whateyor regarding the ap- plication for patent. 101t is found that the invention is new avd patentablo the clientis advised to proceod with the filing of an application for patent, and will then be requested to remit &15 1o cover the first government feo aud § ia paymont of cost of drawing, when ono is necessary As soon as possible after the receipt of this remittance tho specification of the invention will bo carelully prepared and forwarded to the inventor, together with forms for application for patent ready for execution.
