Omaha marksmen who belong to the West- ern Schuetzenound of North America are considerably enthused over the prospects of having a great tournament open to tho world in Omuba in June, 1893, The national tournament of all the schuetzen vereins of this country will be held in Omaha at that timo and a groat crowd will doubtless attend. Au effort will be made, however, to make this of an inter-national nature by opening a world wide competition separate from the regular national competitions. Prizes will be offered ranging from $500 to 3,000 in this world wide competition and it is expected that the inducements will be such as to at- tract hundreds of prominent marksmen from all parts of Furopo as well as America. A separate shooting range will te buiit for this free-for-all match and the national and free-for-all competitions ‘will be held at the same time. It will roquire the outlay of not less than £30,000 to provide grounds, turgets, pits and shooting pavilions for the greut tournament, but the energetic citizens of Omaha who have taken hold of the matter are determined to make it a complete success, They expect to purchase ten acres of land vutright ana fit it up for the purposes of per- manent shooting tournament grounds. They expect to spend not less than £5,000 upon en- tertainment for the delegates. ‘The arrangements for the tournament will require the entiro time of two or three capa- blo men for nearly a year before the shoot begins. It 15 the intention to send delegates to several of the KEnropean tournaments this coming year to work up an interest in tho Omaha gathering. Advertising matter will ve distributed far and wide inviting all the world to visit Omaha in “1803, All this will requite money, but those having the matter in hand believe that the busine: men and property owners of Omaha will cheerfully subscribe to tho support of a moevement which is sure to bring thousands of dollars to Omaha and advertise the city overy country under the sun whero there uro representative marksmen or members of the schuetzen verein. The money required will be largoly spent in permanent improvement thus giving those who assist double cause for helping the laudable offort along. If the na- tional and international tournaments are once begun in Omaba they will continue at frequent intervals for tho centrul location will commend itself to the marksmen. Tho permanent establishment of first-class shoot- ing grounds adjacent to this city would also increase the numbes of state and interstate outests and tournaments and bo the causo of bringing thousands of people to Omaha oevery year. ‘I'ne ofticers of the local association having the matter in hand are: F. Haseltine, Warren, Pa ARE PLEASED WITH RESULTS, Output of Norfolk's Beet £ugar Factory Was Highly Satisfaotory, IMPORTANCE OF THIS ENTERPRISE, Attention ot Thousands Drawn to the Town—Its Employment of Labor —Greater Inducements Of« fered Farmors, Nonrork, Nob,, Dec. 15.—[Spectal to Tun Bre | —Norfolk's groat boet sugar plant, which has been in oporation since the first of last October, recoutly comploted its run, though it could have boon operated six or olght days longer had not the unexpected cold snap frozen so many beets in the ground. Machinists and workmen are now actively engaged in cloaning up tho machinery, loosening joints, and doing such work as will proserye and propare tho plant for its next campaign Hundreds and thousands of people have visitod this factory during its campaign, and this thriving, active, wide awake littlo city bids fair to become ono of the most important points in the state. Its citizons have shown their shrewdness and business tact in having secured an industry in their locality that must in due timo roward them vichly for their onergy. Survounding towns have no- ticod this during tho past summer, when tha beet culturo and demand for labor has at tracted people to Norfolk, giving every ona omployment, making the merchants, bank- ors, hiotels, and in fact everyoue, feol tha benetit ot the building and the running ot tho sugar factory. The company has advertised in some ten of the surrounding towns for contracts dur- ing the coming season, and one town alona has sont them over 200 acres in contracts, ' These contracts aro necessary for the farmer as well as for tho company, enabling the iat- tor to know when it has onough acreaco con- tracted for, when the books will bo closed and 1o moro contracts will be taken, To the farmer it is equally important, s0 ho may kuow he is not planting a crop’ for which there is no markot, but has some reliablo in- stitution to take it from him when it is ready for market. Offering Great Imducements, The company has also increased its price, and offers to the producers of beets two dis- tinct contracts, Oue offers to the producer $bstraight for any beots that will polarize 12 per cent. saccharine matter, with a purity coefticienct of S0 per cent; or, a contract which gives to the producer £ for a beet that contains 12 per cent saccharine matter with a purity coefliciency of 80, and 50 cents (instead of 45 cents as last vear) for ench aud every 1 per cent of saccharine matter contained in the beet over i2 per cent. This gives the farmer for a 16 per cont beet £ a ton, and foran 18 per cent beot 8 a ton. Beets polarized a. Grand Island last year 21 per cent, and this yoar at Norfolk, as high as 17 per cent, it being a poor yoar for sugar mn the beet, as it requires u hot and dry sum- mer. Alarge number of acres have already beon subscribed to oy the farmers surrounding Norfolk and other towns, demonstrating that & plant of this magnitudo does not. only help the particular town in which it is located, but for twenty-fivo to fifty miles surround- ing it contracts have boon and aro. being made. The toanago obtained around Norfolk varies. Whero the land is poor and too sandy the results have been excoodingly un- satisfactory. This is accounted for by some as rosulting from the bad weather, but by the best experts of the sugar factory it is stated that it is exceodingly unwise to try to produce or evor plant beets on poor soll, Whuere the land bas been of good qualit and there is abundance of it around Norfoll, and the farmer has been of a thrifty kind, ho has produced from fifteen to twenty-seven tons to the acre, and in a number of in- stances some sixty odd tons were the rosult of threo acres, averaging $1 a ton, which, under the new contract, would give tha favmer a handsomo yicld from throo acres of beets. Prospeets for Next Year, Between 25,000 and 35,000 acres will ba planted in_ bodts during the coming your; 4,000 for tho Norfolk plant, 4,000 for Grand Island, while 7,000 acres will be planted for u plant owned by the samo company in Cali- fornia, where, owing to tho opon season, thoy can run for six months, and whera plowlng has already commenced; and the other acronge will be put in_for the other compan- ies at Watsonville, Alvarado and Utah, so that the thinking farmor cau 500 what rapid strides this industry is makin The Norfolik plant has producod somo 1,300,000 pounds of the finest sugar, comn- manding the highest prices and having been sold whorover tho best market was afforded. The Gravd lsland plant will produce prob- ably something moro of equally as fine un ur- ticle, This sugar at Norfolk hus boen pro- duced from about 9,000 tons of beets, i"ur tho coming year tho proprietors of tho fac- tory hope that they will not have less than 80,000 to 40,000 tons of beets, and all of which they hope to have planted early by the farmers, und the factory will commence opor- ations as early as beots” are ripe in suflicient quantities, and propably be avle to run_long iuto winter, which is just the time of tho year when it is dificuit to find work, aud which in turn would give to the merchants, bankers, hotels ,and to each and evory person surrounding the localitios where the factory is located an active winter's business. The wonder of the ago—Salvation Oil, for twenty-five cents a bottle, It kills all pain, Columbus discoverod America and Edison inventea tho phonograph, but it remained for Dr. Bull to invent the remedy of the ago, “Cough Syrup,” the kingly cure.
