Rollicking Practical Jokes Played on Friends and Acquaintances Chumming with Lord Dundreary. Larry Jerome, Sothorn and Florence wero afamous trio of jokors in New York ten ye the New York Sun, Florence had w great habit of promis- ing a fish or some game when he was about stavting on a hunting or fishing trip. Day aftorday would pats and the game would not be fortheoming But almost every day a lotter or telegram would come, saying that Florence had not forgotten, that Florenc was just about sending the game, that thore was 10 cause for worry, as a fine fish or deer s on its way to the oxpress offico. At first this solicitousness would cause courteous letters and telegeams in re- turn; as the del gor the tim would get impatient, and would finally be literally haunted by huge fishes or deer, “‘with the complimeats of W. J. Florence.” Then some fine day, whon it was least expected, the fish or deor would come. Through Sothern, Florence came to know the duke of Beaufort, and thoey were excellent friends. Beaufort came to this country and was at the Gilsey house a good while. Florence enlivened his stay by several jokes, which were the talk of the town at the time. tle told the duke that he was not looking well. “You need violent exaorcise,” said he. Vow,I was troubled as you ave. I used to steip to my underclothing, and, tak- inga heavy chair in my hands, would run about my rooms, raising and lowor- ing the chair a hundred times without stopping. It had a grand effect.” Florence insisted upon this for several aays and got the duke intoa mind for trying it. One afternoon, when several ominent persons were going to call on the duke, Florence persuaded him to try the great remedy. The duke un- dressed, and, seizing a great chair, ho elevated it above his head and beg racing about the room. He was soon a fine sweat, with his oyes bulging, his face red, and his veins standing out. Florence went to the office, and when the eminent and dignified persons ar ed, he said to one of them he knew “Gong up to see his Grace?” *Yes,” said the man. “Well,” said Florence,” **I’ve been up to see him, and I'm afraid he’s touched in his head. He is leaping about hi room, making strance noises and break ing the furniture. Come up and see. [ think he ought to be restrained. His family ought to he told.” The eminent and dignified personage accompanied Flovence, and, peepiny through a crack in the door, saw an pparent maniac dashing rvound and round, with staring eyes and (ushed face. Then Florence shut the door and took them away to tell what they had seen, beginning: *It’s very sad about his Grace,” until an impression was general that the Duke of Beaufort had gonemad. A few days later Florenc hid the duke’s clothing, and poked hi head in at the door and said: “Hurry out, the hotel is af The duke pres- ently appenved in the hotel office in a nightgown, slippers, and a tall hat, thus confirming the unfavorable im- pression of his intellectuals, Sothern and Florence took the areatest liberties with each other. [Zach was continually on the lookout, as the telegraph and the mails gave op- portunities when they were not in the same town. Some time in the seventies both were playing in St. Louis. Sothern was giving ** Dundreary,” of course, and Florence and his wife were playing “The Mighty Dotlar,” At the end of the first act of “The Mighty Dollar” Florence leaped into a cab and wus huv- ried to the theatre where Sothern was playinz. Sothern was on and was reading Sam’s letter. All at once he was amazed and confounded by Bard- well Slote hurrying down the wisle, climbing over the footlights, and grasp- ing him by the hand. Thore was awful confusion, and the curtain had to be rung down. In the last actof “The Mighty Dol- lar” that same eveuning, Mvs. Ilorence, giving one of those wonderful homilies, was suddenly interrupted by Sothern in Dundreary costume entering from the wings “lixcuse me,” he |ls])c<l as he wallked toward the footlights, *T just wanted 'to read a letter from my brother Sam. ™ Sothern gave a dinner to Florence at a London club and invited him for half an hour Inter than any of the other guests. He said to his guests, who were emi- nent men in literature and polities and in the nobility: *When Florence comes suppose you all et under the tuble. He'll think his lateness has caused you to leave.” So when Ilorence was an- nounced all except Sothern got under the table, and the tablecloth hid them from sight. As Florence entered he saw Sothern alone and said: **Has nobody come yet?” ©0h, yes, said Sothern in a loud voice. They’ve all come. And s soon as you were announced they hid under the table, though why the devil they did it 1 can’t imagine.” One by one the guests crawled out, looking red and ashamed, Florence and Sothern combined to make u practical joke, which has been told us the best they ever did. They guve a dinuer 1o Adelaide Neilson’s hus- band, Charles Lee, atthe Fifth Avenue hotel. Lee was a soft-spoken, dudish lishmun, with vague and terrible s of American civilization, They assured him that the guests would bo types of America’s best sociery. Allthe guests were introduced to Mr, Tee und false names. For instance, Dan B was called Willinm Cullen Bryant, and Nelse Seymour figured as *that eminent statesman, Horatio Seymour. The dinner was calm enough until the cofice was brought. Then Bryant and Seymour got into a quavrel, which in- créased rapidly in loudness and volume. Finally, the lie was passed, They drew each u large revolver and began f rapidly each at the othe table. The other guests lirst tried to pacily them, then joined in the quarrel, drew pistols and began firing. Mr. Lee kept his seat for a while, but soon darted under the table, which places he was with difficulty persuaded to leave. “Poor Bill!” said Eugene Field toa reporter of the Chicago Times, “died suddenly l,um as ho always expected to do, though he thought apoplexy would take hiw off. He wxuu}ugh Mver and gave away much, He told me once that he closed each season about even and then borrowed #5,000 for his summer vacation, He had some peculiar ideas on eating and clalmed t be the ounly ¢ got lon ‘ num who knew how to ordor the correct dinner. The ideal dinner, according to I‘ lorence, was stowed torrapin with Ma- deira, followed by canvasbaek duck nnd champagne. Nothing more—unless you chose to smoko n cigar. The terrapin should be served in o chafing dish, so us to bo hot, and tho duck so ronsted thut the blood would follow the st:oke of the knif “CBilly' Florenco was one of the greatest” jokers that ever lived, and, like fow men, was willing to play a joko and then never s word about it afterward. That is” what he did when he got the Minneapolis papers to an- nounce that Captain Neville, u distin- guished seientist from South America, would shoot off a *human rocket’ in front of Florence's hotel, The pavers all over the country were full of it and a great crowd gathored to see the captain sail skyward hitched to a rocket-stick, Of course the whole thing was a hoix of ‘Billy’s,” but he never told about it till years aftor, “Lator, in Now York, ata time whon Florence and Dion Boucicanit wore o little ‘out,” *Billy’ and Sothern were running together a great deal. Finally about New Yoear's, after quite a bat, Ilorence proposed that thoy should quit th nonsense, and thern agr The next morning, however, Florence, while #till in bed, got a box containing one of his own handkerchiefs, to which was fastened this noto: “Doar Billy: Here is you You u terd, ¢ handkerchief, st havo dropped it in my room yes- Yours, Ani. loren: concluded at once that iv was from Sothern and feoling alittlo put out about such a joke, wrote this note to Sothern: “Sir: Your humor is quito as bad as your art, Hereaftor et us have no more of your buffoonery. W. J. Frorex sthern, when he got the note read it and then called for an envelope In this he put the note and sent it to Bouci- cault. Well it took six months before Baccieault could be made to understand that Flovence had not tried to insuit him. *Avother stol told of Florence is that he w the only man in the world who had the temerity to ask the prince of Wales for alight. And he got it, too. “Florence’s domestic relations were al- ways most pleasant. He and his wife wore mutually devoted and there was never a breath of scandal raised against either.” i FOUR MILLION RED H S. This is Interesting to All the Pretty Girls, United States Census statistics, which will soon be publishea, show that there are about 4,000,000 red-headed people in the United States. This vast army does not include in its ranks people whosa hair is of a veddish tint, or even auvurn or golden-haired people. Lt simply in- cludes those who have the undeniable right to get mad when some unsympu- thetic boy taunts them in public on the terra cotta tint of their topnots. ‘These same statistics show that Phila- delphin is entitled to about 60,000 red- hended persons. These figuves might at first sight seem exaggerated, but a little work in the line of personal in- vestigation has shown conclusively that the figures are about right. A whole volume of undoubted size could be writton about the ved heuds of this city, suys the Philadelphin Record. ‘The most of them can be found about Ken- sington. This can be accounted for by the fact that Kensington is largely peopled with Irish or decendants of Lrish. A large number can be found in Southwark for the very sume reason. When it comes down to capillar freaks some very notable ones can bo found in the ranks of Philadelphin ed heads, For instance, there are two red headed negroes. Ono is a strapoing big male and the otheris a slender female. The female often promenades Chestnut sirect, but the malerarely ever gots far- ther north than Lombard street. In Kensington a worthy Hebrew couple have fiery red hair, and so have four of their children. A" Pine street mer- chant whose hair was fiery red a fow yenrs ago, now wears a variegated crop. It looks as if some person had slapped him on the head hore und there with a white paint brush. ‘Lhe weather on a recent afternoon wa 80 delightful that Chestnut streeet was packed all the afternoon with promen- aders. During u walk up Chestnut street from Ninth to Brond while the crowd of promenaders was at 1ts height fifty-cight red hended persons were on- countered. While the clock w ¢ ing off twenty minutes last ovening soventy red headed persons pussed tho Broad street station. Of these a large major e females, e walking from the city hall down Market street to the postoltice seventcen red headed persons were encountered, Iirthe postoflice some of the queerest kind of facts regarding red hends were unearthed. At one of the windows works a protty gl with the reddest kind of hair; in fact, the hairisso red thav the clerks in the ollice call the young lady “Pinkey.” When quest- tioned yvesterday Pinkey” laughed gayly, shook her Titian locks, und mer- rily eroled a-couplot faomun old Celtie song: Heigh for tho apple and ho for the pour, Give me the girl with the red, red hair. “I have noticed,” said Pinkey, *“‘that about two-thirds of the people who come to the foreign delivery window after muil have the finest kind of red hair. Ldon’t mean that the haiv itself is fine, but I mean thut the colov is out of sight. They are the most polite people in tho world to wait on, but let me tell you that you must attend strictly to busi- ness “when a red head is waiting, for their tempers are as quick as powder., For some reason or other vers fow red heads buy postage stamps, | don’t know why this is. I have noticed anoth funuy thing about red heads. Of course you know the vaper collar is almost uns known now, But it isa fact that every paper collar [ have seen in the last two years hus been worn by a red headed man.’ The proprictor of an employment bureau also contributed a few odd sta- tistics. **About three-guarters of thoe persons whe come here seeking work have red bair, 1 began to notice this ubout three years 1 [ investigated and found thut unbridled t is the venson 50 many red hai continually outof a job," A well Known physician, who hus i human hair a study for years, delive an entertaining lecture on red hair vo- cently. “The great Italian painter Titian,” suid he, “was 80 fond of red hair that ho raved about it, and at one time is said to have offered his soul to the devil, pro- vided his hair would turn red. This passion for red hair has raged flercely sice early times, About every wight yoars red hair comes in style, und the belles try to color their hair in cons formity with the prevaiiing style. “The venson why red hair is red is be- cause of the pigment accumulated in the cells of the medulla, In other words, there are sacs at the foot of each red hair filled with three or four distinct pigments, all of a reddish tint. 1 have taken certain spectmens of very red human hair, heated them with twenty times thelr volumes of water, and ob- tained us a result & vory marked pink solution. That goos to show that all she hair is impregnated with the red stufl ¥
