S, Willara left England a vear w20 t0 test the favor and the diserimi- hation of American audiences he came almost unheralded. He had no mannerisms to pique a morbid curiosity. His character had not been smirched to make a dainty morsel for tongue of scandal monger. In short, he was not “‘boomed”’ (Lo use a comprehensive Americanism) into notoriety or made u fashion by quostionabls methods. He was received coldly au first, as might have been expectod with a stranger, unannounced by the usual tricks und braying of thearical management, but_the fire of his genius first compelled attention, then conquered ad- wiration. 1t is not too much to say that Mr. Willard is today ono of the foremost artists in the world in his school of acting, and his Cyrus Blenkarn, ns portrayed in “The Middleman” at tho Boyd last night, 18 oue of those masterly picces of dramatic art that will en- dure as'a distinet und and lasting impression. The story is that of a patient, plodding potier, onc of whose discoveries has enriched his employer, Josenh Chandler, while he hini- self romains peor. Cyrus Blenkarn’s favorite daughter is wronged by young Chandler, whose father cruelly adds to the wrong by preventing their marriage. Mary Blenkarn disappears and is sunposed to have beon lost at sea. The old potter has been experimenting for twenty years to discover the secret of making u fine ware, His hope is rewarded at last, after gereat triuls, and his old employer is ruined. “The injured father intends to bo avenged on the Chandlers by turning thom ont of home penniless, but when he asks himseli what Lis daughter Mary would do he relents. Ho shows the morcy which ue knows ste would feel, aud in the final scono Mary Bleniharn comes back as the happy wile of tue younger Chaudler. M. Willara’s splendid art is of a quality giffeult to analyze. He apparently has no stago tricks or personal mannerisms which may be soized upon for individualizing his method. He has inu most cminent degree the rare faculty of losing his own identity. Tho audience seo, not Wil- lard, but the gentle, lovablo old potter, wrapt up in_ his exporiments aud his sweet daughter. They see, not an actor, buta ruggedly noblo Soul swept by the emotions of love, of vengeance, of Joy, aud displaying through it all a moral grandour and an ex- quisite simplicity that captivate the sympa- thies completely. Iu the presence of such consummate art the spectator has no thought of method; the heart conquers thoe bead aud gives itself ap to the epjoyment set forth to tho senses, Mr. Willard hias 8 magnificent voico, reso- nant but responsive to his lightest will, with a wagnetic quality that is a distinct delight of itself. To do Mr. Willard’s genius full jus- tice might incur & charge of extravagant praise, but it i so altogotner admirable tnat it may b permitted to advise lovers of the finest in the dramatic art not to 10se whe opportunity to see him in ““The Middleman.” Tho company is evenly balauced and gives Mr, Willurd an_ intelligent, creditable " sup- port. Miss Maric Burroughs, one of the beautics of the American stage, does not offer the traditional tempestuousness in the emotional role of Mary Blenkarn, but it is pervaded with a guiet sweetness that has its own charm. Royce Carleton as Joseoh Chandler; Harry Cane as the oily, tricky Batty Todd; F. H. Tyler ns Josso Pog fathful workman, and Miss Zefe Tilbury as Nancy Blenkarn are particularly noticeable for praiseworthy work. Not the least merit of this entertuinment is its staging, the scene representing the firing room of & pottery being a particularly effec- tive piece of realism. Dockstader's Minstrels, An immensa and enthusiastic audience greeted the popular favorite Low Dockstader and his admirable minstrel aggregation at the Farnam stroet theater last evoning. ‘I'he performance was noteworthy inasmuch as it was the first attempt made in many years to return to old-time minstrelsy, Judeed by the criterion of pobular applause, this step was & judicious one. Lew Dockstader and George Powers were as mognotic as ever, and kept the audience convulsed wiih laughter witn their witty topical songs and humorous monologues. Messrs, Mclutyre, Girard, Heath, Salcombe, Lindsay and Field: icg, ol clever vocalists, saue the sweet songs of other days most acceptably. The ludi- crous boxing bout between Joseph Perry and John Magrew was oxcrucatingly fuuny be- cause of the great disparity in'size of the contestants. The western ronds refuse to allow any more of their equipment to bo used ocast of Chicago, aud their eastern connections are unable to providoe cars onough to make the necessary transfers. [Ihe stop orders will still further inconvenience the western roads, and al- though strenuous efforts are being' made to keep all lines clear, it is pregicted that be- foro the end ot the month there will be a tremendous blockade extending from the Missouri river to the scaboard. A banquet was then held, after which speecues were mado, the topic discussed being the silver question, by Senator Willinm Stewart of Nevada, Prof. J. Lawrence Laughlin of Coruell university and Francis G. Newlands of San Francisco and Nevada. Senator Fraucis G. Newlands of Nevada said that trusts, combizes and corners could uot destroy the natural crop of monay, but could limt it by legislation aud the conspir- acy ovganized in 1573 was to muke bonds pay- avle in gold and then to increase the value of every unit of gola by daestroying the use of every unit of silver. The adherents of gold had since been driven from their entrenchments. Silver haa beon restored s legal tender and pro- jon made for the coinage of between £2,000,000 and §,000,000 per month. The predictions made that pold would be with- drawn from the country, and it would become a silver country, had not been veri Tho opponents of silver claimed that tae countries of Kurope would flood us with silver, forgetting or ignoring the fact that such a transfer would involve the loss to Rurope of at least 3 cents on every dollar in circulation. Even 1f this were attempted 1t could easily be pro- vented by legislation. The United States necds more money than any other country in the world and can only get it by borrowing or by coiniug it. It owes today more than the entire volume of money that oxists in the country. Prof. Lawrence Laughlin of Cornell uni- versity and Horace White of the Evening Post spoke on the gold issue. =g LOOKING FOR BLOOD, Mr. Hume Threatens to Take Actor Mantell’s Life.
