T. MOORE. December inaugurates a new phase of farm life in the New England, middle and western states. It ushers in real winter, closes the chief fiela labors of the year, and gives rural workers a long period for physical recuperation and mental improvement. The season has been a remarkably favorable one for terraculturists, who have not only been vouchsafod abundant crops, but’ most propitious weather for securing the same in good condition. Moreover, the prospect that the prices of most farm products will advance for months to come is veryencouraging. Producers should now study how urains, fruits and vegetables can best be kept until they can he more profitabiy marketed. The saving, protection and economicul feed- ing of forage crops are also matters of vital importance to every would-be prosperous husbandman, and those who devote thereto thoughtful and good manngement ean havdly fail of being liberally rewarded. Winter 18 the sen- son for toil tillers to read about, 1nvesti- gate and discuss these and other branches of rural ecoromy, the right understanding of which may materialiy promote their progress and prosperity. Storing and Marketing Produce. Farmers who have stored their staple crops safely, are advised to ‘‘make haste slowly” in marketing the same. In or- dinary seasons it is considered good pol- icy to sell rather than keep most kinds of farm produce. But this is an excep- tional year—ono in which American farmers have the very rare combination of large crops and "advancing prices, The foreign demand for our grain and meat (notably wheat. pork and beef) will not only increase the prices of those staples, but have a tendency to enhance the value of farm products genecrall Hence, producers located near or within easy nccess 1o a fair market, and who can keep grains, apples, potatoes and vegetables from one to four or more mouths, without material loss or de- terioration, will probably be gainers by s0 doing. But those who hold their pro- duce for better prices must storve it with unusual eare and guard against loss from decay, undue shrinkage, tho ravages of vermin, ete. By the way, it is surprising how many of our farmers, after toiling for months and taking special pains, lose much or all of their profits by cither negligence in storing or carelessnoss in packing, shipping or marketing their most valuu- ble stapl Such mistakes in manage- ment are discreditable, and withal ex- pensive, Surely people who possess brains enough to produce good crops ought to be shrewd enough to disposo of them profitably. The true course is to keep posted about markets, prices and prospects, to avoid middlemen and speculators, and to deal with principals whenever practicable. Farm Buildings. Last month our readers were advised to put their farm buildings in condition to withstand a long and inclement sens son, and now that winter has come we urge thoe necessity of this upon all de- lingqaents in the matter. What was then said about providing for the warmth and comfort of both man and beast is even more important at this juncture, with an increasingly frigid ~ temperature; therefore all who have not yet protected their dwellings and outbuildings agninst the searching cold and Borean blasts that always attend the march of the icy monarch should do so right specdily. Having provided for the comfort and convenience of the family by putting the dwelling in order for winter, next see that the barns, stables, piggeries, poul- try houses, ete., are in such condition as to render their inmates warm and comfortable, and which will alike save forago and prevent suffering. But while securing the requisite warmth and comfort for loved Betsy and the babies at home, and the valua- ble but less cherished pets in stable and elsowhere, do not neglect ventilation. Pure air is not only essential to the health of those dwelling in human habi- tations, but it {s promotive of the com- fort und thrift of animals confined in close stables or other unventilated quarters. In fact, next to warmth r gard should be had to rendering the air of all occupied tenoments as pure and wholesomo as possible. Wore the sani- tary laws touching ventilation bottor undorstood and heeded by people gen- erally, in both town and county, the re- sult would bo groatly —conducive to health and longevity Core of Live Stock, All domestic animals care at this critical season. Next to the warm quarters olvendy alluded to, wholosome food, regular feeding and pure water are essential factors in keep- quire special ing farm stock in a healthy and thrifty condition during the prolonged cold weather. Many farmoers now winter their cattle largely upon ensilage, and find 1y ndvantageous, but the groat ma- jorit,, continue to depend mainly on corn” stalks and other forage crop with the addition of grain, meal, ete., a8 needed. How and to what ex- tent these may best be fed, each farmor must decide for himself, being governed by supply, circumstances and previous experience in feeding. Horses will usually in thrive if kept well ventilated stables, given suitablo rations, exercised daily, and properly groomed. 1t worked on' slippery roads, with fce and snow, keep them we!l and sharply shod. They should be blanketed whonever exposed to frosty air, osp inlly after vapid driving o any heay work. Provide good bedding at night, but use none that has been soiled in the day time. Never allow a frosted bit to be put into a horse’s mouth, Mileh cows can be fed generously, salted regularly, given pure watér (slightly warmed is bost), and carded daily—all good factors for those engaged in the profituble business of winter duirying or in milk producton. Sheep need to bo well sheltered from storms and kept dvy. 1f spring lambs are raised the ewes should be well cared for to render the business profitable. Good management generally pays good dividends in raising wool and mutton. Swine always pays for good care and keep, and they should bo given these now, as pork islikely to advance. Give breoding s comfortable, roomy quarte can got some ex se in the open air, away from cattle or horses, Ieed them good, nutritious food, but not much Indian corn or meal. Poultry should now be pushed in fat- tening enclosures. Don’t overfeed, but give varviety enough to keep up the ap- petite. If you market any, try to do so before the Christmas holidays, for the glut then causes low .prices. Laying Tens shoutd be encouraged by the use of animal food, ground shells, and bones, and kept in warm quarters, Give them plenty of sharp gravel. Kitchen and Market Garden. Farmers and others who have work to do in kitchen gardens should complete it speedily, as they cannot sufely trust to a continuance oi mild weather—and the same is true of market gardeners, whose operations are more extensive All who have roots and celery stored in trenches are reminded that unless they are sufliciently protected there is danger from freezing. Tho amount of covering should be governed by the weather, add- ing more as it becomes colder, and mak- ing the final covering toward the close of the month. Celery in boxes in cellars should be kept as cool as may bo without, freezing. Cabbages may bo covered with their heads down in a few inches of earth, though some put them in trenches and cover them with boards, Cold frames that contain cabbage und other plants need daily airing when the temperature is not very frigid, as injury is more likely to come™ from too much heat than too much cold. Note that house cellars used for storing fruit and vegetabies shouid connect with a chim- ney, if possible, for ventilation. Horse radish may be had all winter if dug early this month, and stored in a box of carth in the cellar. So long asthe grourd remains open much may be ac- complished toward manipuluting and enriching garden eround for the profit- able production of crops next seuson. Bear in mind that whatever work can be done now as plowing, spading, re- placing glass, repaiving sashes’ and shutters for hot-beds, cold frames, etc will facilitate operations next spring, and be governed accordingly. Other Timely Matters. The ice crop will ripen soon, and it behooves every one who needs the frigid commolity—and 1t is a necessity to many farmers, especially thoso engaged in daivying—to arrange for securing a supply. Ice costs only the labor of har vesting and storing, and thoso near ponds or streams should at once provide the requisite ice houses, tools and saw- dust, 0 s to be ready to gather their share of congealed aqua as soon us it is in prime condition for cutting and stor- ing. This is urged for the cogent rea- son that the first ice is not only usually the best, but often the only really. good ice obtainable in man, Im-ulitim'. ‘ake an inventory before the end of this month, which closes the endar year. Lvery ruralist should take an ac- count of all his live stc farm tools and machinery, and makoa fair estimate of the value of crop products on hand, whether they to be used at home or marketed. This is the only way in which farmers ean ascertain their truo financial condition, and -should not be neglected by any one who desives infor- mation concerning his own progress and prosperity, or the reverse. Keeping farm accounts is another duty that no soil tiller can afford to omit. Every man who runs a farm should keep a careful vecord of his transactions and operations, including all outgoes and incomes, This, with a careful invent- ory, will not only show how he stands with the world at the close of the year— whether he has made or lost money— but be valuable asa guide in futire. Many cogent reasons might bo given why the furmer should be as carveful in this matter as the merchun', manufact- urer, or any other business man, but we have only space to advise all who do not now keap accounts,to prepare for o doing on tho first of January, Moeantime, take a careful inventory in order to begin the new year aright, Happy Farm Life. Farm life in December,” ma should be made as huppy as at any other period. However sombre the appear: ance without, the sunshine of peace and cheerfulness ought to pervade and en- liven every progressive farmer’s firo- side. Prosperity prevails among the industrious toil tillers of America, for they are “blossed in basket and in store” at the close of a most fruitful season. Their physical wants being amply provided for, the inmates of every rural homo can devote special attention to reading, study and mental improv: ment. Fathers should not only provide choice books and periodicals for family reading, but see that the district schools which iheir children attend are well taught and sustained, And innocent recreation and smusement, at the five side and elsewhere, should not be ig- nored. Give the young people oppor- tunities for soclal intercourse both at home and in places of public assembly.
