Thoy began their work systematically in August, 18W0, and sinco that time they have robbed tho mails in Washington, St. Louis, Chicago, St. Paul, Cloveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburg, Louisvillo, Nashville, Denver, New Orleans and other places. The authorities have stolen checks for §25,000 which the thieves had cashed, and the proceeds of all their robberies for the last fifteon months must have amounted to twice that sum. But the United States gov- ernment is an_antagonist which nearly at ways wins in the end. The mombers of the baiid wero successfut for a time, but tho hand of justice has been closing on them for sev eral months and now they are fasc in its Rrasp. The leader of this gang is Charles Hub- bard, alius Charles Diamond, and his assoc ates ave J. I, Stratton, T. C. Boalan alias Clayton, and Henry Armstrong alias “Sh ny" Armstrong. ‘Tho tnree first mentioned were arrested in A tlanta on November 2 and Armstrong fell into the hands of the authori- ties in this city on Saturday. The scheme of the thieves was simplicity itself, They would 20 to a city and knock the lock off & street letter box at night. 'I'hen they would bavea key made from it which would open the other letter boxes in the placo. The men worked only in the business districts of tno city. With their key they would open a box which promised o good supply of plunder, All the lotters woro tuken' to the hotel at which the men were stuying. A web blotter pressed against each side of each lettor moistencd the mucilago and made it easy to open the flap.
