OMAHA'S SPLENDID CHOIRS, Prominent Factors in the Oity's Religious Work and Worship, SKETCHES OF PRINC!PAL ORGANIZATIONS. Sweet Singers of Trinity, St. Philo- mena and Westminster—Coming State Convention of Nebraska ndeavors—Church Notes, Ever since that primeval hour in tho his- tory of the universo, when Joh states that “'tho moruing stars sang togothor, and ali the sons of God shouted for joy," music of some character, soems to have been n prominent factor in religious worship. From harp and trimbrol and tom-tom; from cymbal and flute and coronet; from violin and organ and tho humaa throat countless vibrations, har- monious, sweet and otherwise, havo gono forth as tho expression of mau's adoration of a supremo being. Inrecent years the most popular sacrod music among the more nighly cultured peo- ple of the earth, is a combination of the hu man voice and tho pipe organ. Thero appears to be, at present, no othor instrament or com- bination of instruments able to compete with -tho pipo organ in furnishing the _accompini ment for vocal music of a sacred charactor. Intho music of the pipeorgan thoro are three primo essentials that give it supremacy over all other iustruments. They are vol ume, purity and variety, In addition to these the organ is capable of producing tone that wiltblend beautifully with the human voice and assist in the exprossion by ad- ding volumo ana power. A splen- did pipe organ, nowever, will not mako amends for poor voices in the choir, It 1s like putting new wino into old bottlos, botn witl suffe Thero can ba no doubt of tho fact that «ood music induces almost as many peoplo to attend church as good preaching. The choir probably draws a' greater number of non- church ‘members than the proacher. In this respect members of the choir tecome preach- ors of the gospol. Excellent music and elo- quent aud earnest preaching work well togother. Rither witbout the otner is likely to fall short of the mark.
