Some months ago it looked as though tho death of Charles Rondelez and tho disposi- tion of his property would raise an issuo be- tween this country and Belgium that only war would down, But uow averything has been settied and white winged peace is on duty again. oz was Mayor Cushing’s coachman. the month of August, 1560, the mayor and his family took an outing for a few days. Rondelez slept in o dark chamber and one night by acordent or intontionally he turned on the gas, It matters not how it occurred, the next morning tho coachman was a cold corpse. He had been in this country some time and by practicing the strictest economy bad accumulated quito a share of the goods of this world. In dve courso of time the mat- ter WHS called to the attention of Judge Shields, who appointed C. J. Smyth administrator. Mr. Smyth went along in tho manuer outlined by law and soon leurned that all of tho dead man's relations reside upon the other side of the ocean. Soon after this, in some way, M. Lobert, tho Belzian consul, residing at St Marys, Kan, learned of = the death of "Kondelez 'and demanded that all proceedings be dismissed and the prop- erty turned over to him. This Judge Shields refused to do, holding that the dead man had boen an American subject and consequently was boyond the jurisdiction of the king of Belgium, This did not suit the consul and he at onco opencd up a correspondence with Secretary Blaine and Governor Thayer, i forming "them what he would do if Judge Shields’ did not comply with his demands. All of the pavers were roferred back to Judge Shields, who, in the meantime had ascertained that there was some. question about Rondelez’ citizenship, he having taken out only his first papers. This question was referred to Secrotary Blaine, and yvesterday the judge received an opinion from Acting Secretary William I, Wharton that settles the matter. He savs “The taging out of first or intention paper is not naturalization, 1t neither makes tho party a citizen of this country, nor does it deprive him of the citizenship of his origin.” Govervor Thayer by the same mail also sent the judge a letter, in which he stated that lie had made au investigation and wa satisied that Mr. Lobert was what ho claimed. Ho adyised that after all debts were paid the balance of the Rondelez estato be transferred to Mr. Lobert. This ends the matter, aud Judge ishields is happy, as bis first decision in tho premises hus beon fully sustained, What Is Good Baking Powder?
