Story of the Alleged Swindie of Edmurd Latham, THE PAY JUDGMENTS. FAILED TO Hundred Dollars Borrowed to Relieve an Ol lowa Favmer, nt it Went the Wrong Way. Yesterday was the day set for the trial of P.J. MeMahon on the charge of embezzle ment. A great deal of interest is foit in this case from the fact that the defendent lived in Council Bluffs all the early part of his life, and still has many friends and acquaint ances here, ddmund Latham, an aged farmer living in Hardin township, is the prosecuting witness, His story of the difi- ulty between himself and Mc¢Mabon is sub stantially as follows I'iwo jidgments wero property, aggregating 1,500, Latham wanted (o pay off the judements, and as he had not the necessary cash, he went to Me Mahon, who was then in the loan business in this city, and he had hin negotiate a loan of $1,000. This loan was secured in May, 1586, I McMahon was appointed as ~Latham'’s agent to pay off the judzments and have the property freed from’ encumbrance. Latham did ot out for some time that McMahon had gotten _ the money, but had faed to pay off the judgments, but as soon as te learned of it he went to see MeMahon, who at once acknowl edeed that be nad appropriated the money, put promised to get it s $00a as possiblo and put it to the use for which it was intended by Latham, I'he affair was allowed to d along for sevoral years, MeManon putting Latham off with oue pretext or another, uatil finally the caso was brought before the grand jury and he was idicted for em- bezziement. Ior some time after the indic ment nothing could be learned of his w!
