While the Room Was Brightly Hlumi- nated and an Officer Patrolled the Sidewalk, the Work Was Done, A. A. Hart, who Keeps a jewelry store at 537 Broadway, was visited by burglars yes. terday morning, for the third time within a year and a nalf, When he opened his store avbout ¥ o'clock in the morning, be received the first intimation that all had not gone right curing the night. The outer doors of bis safo stood wide open, while the iuner doors lay scattered on the floor, together with & ch'sel aud sledge bammer, Which had evidently been used by the thieves in effect- ing an_entrance. Ou the show case near the riins of the afe lay the wa cases and jewelry trays which he had put in the safe before locking up Monday night, entirely stripped of their contents. Not a thing was left n the store in the way of watches and Jewelr but the stock w otherwise un touched, so far s 18 now known. Mr. Hart places his loss at about £1,000, which was con- siderablyfover half of ail he had The burglurs had entered through the back deor. They had first attempted to force their way through a window, and had bored a dozen holes in a wooden shutter in such a way 85 to enable them to breuk it off. T had also cut away some of the putty on one of the panes of g 4 then for some reason or other abandoned that part of the performance. After obtaining entrance to the shed on the rear of the building they cut out onoe of the panels of the inside door and unlocked the door from the inside, A light was burning on the show three feet from the safe, and it burning when Mr. Hart opened t:p yester morning, <o that the thicves must have dorie their work with surprising boldness. They succeeded in some way in_getting the outer doors of the safe open. Mr. Hart is_certain ho shut them and locked them when be went home at night, and the one mystery con- nected with the case is how any safe blower who manifested so much greeuness in some of his other transactions could master the combination and get into the safe in the pro- fessional style, Aiter the outer doors were opened a hole was drilled in the inner door and the com- bination blown to pieces with powde tho thieves then nad everything their own way, The tools which were found on the floor in the morniug were identified by G. H. Brown a8 being the ones stolen from his blacksmth shop or unper Broadway, and consequently the sama ones that were used in cracking the safeat the Cousolidated Tank line ofice last Friday night. There is no clue to the perpe trators of the deed, but public opinion puts it down to the credit of a gang of well kuown toughs who have been permitted by the authorities Lo lio around the city for months past without molestation, Parents Read This, July and_August are anxious montns for mothers who carefully watch over their little ones.
