L. Kimball, third vice-prosident of the Union Pacific ralway and president of the Omaha Unfon” Doepot cowpany, The parties tothe conforence were Mr. Kimball and Messvs, Lowrey, Bechel, Eisassor and Cooper of a conneil committee appointed last week for tho purpose of finding out what could be done toward getting work started on the new union depot. Some surprises were in_store for the com- mittee. o first ono came when Mr. Kim- ball informed the gentlemen that the Union Depot company had no funds with which to complete tho work even if there were no other obstacles in the way. This was explained by the statement that thie bouds of the Union Depot company, is- sucd last fall had been diverted 1o meet the running exponses of the Union Pacific and Burlington roads and was gone beyond re- 1. Thero was no way to get it back and tho only thing to do would ba for the two companies to go to work and put the amount used. This would require time and wight not be succossfully accomplished atall, Mr. Kimball spoke for himself and for Me: Holdrege of the Burlington. He said they wore both anxious to have the depot com pleted and would do everything in their power to have the work doveé, One of the conditions—the prime one— which Mr. Kimball sald would be neces- sary to meet befors further work would be " done, would be tho dismissal of the iujunction suits now pending in court prohibitin- the delivery of the city viaduct vonds to the dapot company. ‘he conucilmen present rofused to agree to any such condition untit work has oeen actually and carnestly coramenced on tho depot structure and assurances given that thero will bo no further delay in the comple- tion of the depot. At the council meeting tonight the commit- tee will roport progress. In the meantime Mr. Kimball will make an effort to got the matter before a conforence of railrond_officials. Jay Gould will start home in & fow days froni his summer retrcat up in Tdaho and will be met by Mr. Kimoall, who will bring him to Omaha for a conferonce with officials of the union depot and of the Burlington road. Mr. Kim- ball hopes to have the magnates arrive at a decision at this meeting that will result in the renewal of work on tne long promised, long delaycd union depor. Mr. Kimball Explains. Mr. Thomas R. Kimbail states that the report that the bonds of the Union Depot company had been diverted to the payment of the opcrating expenses of the Uuion Pa- cific and the Burlington was utterly with- out foundation, for the simple reason that the Unton Depot company had never been bonded for any amount. *We have spent nearly half a million on improvements in the vicinity of tho depot in buying land, widening our entrance to the devot, laylng sewers, and building the depot'as far as 1t has proeressed,’ said Mr. Kimball. “We have spent all the mouoy in our treasury in this way and are now de- vendent upon those two companies for any further funds. As the matter stands at preseut neither company feels liko putting any moro money into the depot uutil the title to the ground bas been cleared of the cloud which rests upon it. That is the reason there is no money in the treasury of the depot company and not because any bonds of the company have been diverted." S Children COry for It. AN INSANE FIRE for Piring the County Hospital, Nothing but prompt action and early dis- covery provented tho county hospital from going up in smoke last night. Shortly after 9 o'clock as County Agent Mahoney was making his rounds, preparatory to closing up for the nizht, he smelled tho smoke of burning wood as’ he was passing along the corridor of the second floor. He hastened at once to the kitchen, but found that deserted and the fires out. ' Retracing his steps, as he passed the elevator he saw bright tongue of flame shoot up the shaft from the ground floor. It was a time when hasty action was required, and springing down a stairvay near by, the county agent was s00n upon the scen He was horrified to find an inmate of the institution, Johin Scenie in the bottom of the shaftindustriously piling boards and inflam- abio material upon a fire_that was just get- ting under headway. Mr. Maboney rushed to the kitchen, and returning with ‘a couple of buckets of water soon quenchod the tlames. Scenie, the fire fiend, is a lunatic. Some nine years ago he was sent to tho state in- sane hospital, where, after being kept a fow years, o wil pronounced fncuravle and re- urneldl to this conuty, Since that time he has been an inmate of the bospital. After Mahouey had extinguisied the blaze, Scenio was locked in a cell and hereafter will be deprived of the liberties that he hus here- tofore enjoyed. ‘Tnis fire explains two mysterious fires that started in the old county hospital last ydar. Ono year ago last Juue fire was disc in the garret of the buuding and was putout before doing any aamage, but how it caught was unexplained. A few days later an attempt wos made to burn the carpenter shop, but this time the fire was discovered before it. had mude much headway. Mr. Mahoney is now of the opinion thyt his crazy charge is the party who has made all of the trouble.
