WANTED T0 HANG THE PARSON Tadignaat olored Oitisess Oall in a Body on "Rev, Dr." Sherwood. MORE OF THE COLORED BOYS' TROUBLES, One of Them Wears Scars from Cuts Inflicted by is Drutal Mas- ter's Rawhide — Sher- wood's Story. “f want protection from dese d——d nig- gors, jodgo. My God, dey got awful excited last night,” The speaker was ‘‘Rev. Dr.”” Sherwood, the eolored journeyman soul saver, and while he ‘was as sensational and dramatic as ever, 1n this instance ho was not compelled to draw on his imagination, for the facts furnished ample material. Ho appeared in court yestorday morning 0 answer to tho charge proforred against him of maltreating and abusing the lit- tle colored boys under his charge, and his demaud for protection was occasioned by a demonstration that was made by a number of thecolored residents of thecity. The story published in yesterday's Bre called their attention” to the cuse and after o brief investigation they visited the Walker residence in a body and made an angry demand for the alleged preacher. It ‘was not deemed advisable for him to put in an appearance, and his friends did their best 10 quivt the excited crowd. They fully in- tended to take him out and handle him roughty, but sover counsel prevailed and the crowd dispersed. he “*Rev. Dr.” wus very much unnerved by the demonstration, and he invoked the aid of the court toprotoct him from personal violence, The judge told him that he had no such power, and advised the ovangelist to seek vrotection at the hands of the chief of police if ho felt afraia, but Sherwood aid uot mako any demand ou the chief for a uni- formed body guard Mrs. isherwood was in court with her hus- band, and when the hearing of the case was postponed until 2:30 o'clock Monday after- noon, she collectoq the boys_around her and started for her boarding plice, while Sher- wood disappenred in an opposite direction. An attempt to talk with the boys alone was not successful, as the woman kepta very close eye on them. At the boarding place at 1211 Davenport street, however, the boys were found, as well as an_opportunity to talk with them, although either sherwood or his wife found it convenient to drop around every few min- utes and seo that noue of the littie flock wero missing. The littlo fellows were very roti- cent, and it was evident that their treat- ment wus not a pleasant subject for either discussion or contemplation. None of this, however, was apparent whoa they were msked about the cities they had visited or any otlier subject except the one that re- called so much that was unploasant and pain- ful. When a band book was picked up and one of the boys was asked about the music, the others gathered around and all animatedly entered into the conversation, but the minute that an at tempt was made to switch off into tho rels tions between Sherwood and the boys it was as if the clouds had suddenly opened and a chilling rain had descended. Silence fell upon the group, and they sueaked away ns 1f the very mention of Sherwood’s namo in connection with their treatient. presaged the sppenranco of the dreaded rawhide. ‘The members of the band are George Green of Jacksonville, Fla., baritone, who has been ‘with the band a year; Willlam Jones of Little Rock, tuba, who has been with the d six months ; George I. Thompson of Tallahassee, ¥la, B flat cornet, with the band sixteen months; Sam DeLaney of Fernandino, ila. E tlat cornet, with the band a year; BSam Johnson of Mewphis, i alto, soven months with the band; Julius Frazier of Augusta, Gu., bass drutn, six months with the company; Lorrane Mitchell, New Or- leans, suare drum, eight months with the pand, and Farnas Davis of Atchison, slide trombone, four months with the band. The boys are as bright as a dollar and as full of life as & dog is of fleas, and there is upon the surface no reason for the silence and depression that envelopes them when certain matters are touched upon. They have learned their lesson well and they toll with a monotonous but suspicious menoss of language of the whippings that they receive “‘when they need it.” It was impossible to got each of the boys out by himself, although this was accomplished in two instances. They seem to be suspicious of each other and afraid to talk of the matter in the presence of another, On one point there 1s an_apparent unanim- ity of sentiment, and that is that Sherwood is impartial in his use of the rawhide, and lashes them all freely from the B flut cornat- Ist to the bass drummer. One of the boys now bears two great, livid marls across bis face, which 100k like the mark of & branding tron. They were caused by the rawhide only » fow days ago. The boys stato that they aro whipped only #'when they need it,” but it is apparent that they have been talight they need whinping for things not ordinarily supposed to demanu such correction. In éach other's presence they stated that they came in s soon as it got hot, but one of the boys, when alone, told of a free-for-all whipping which was inflicted on every one of tho eight the other day, because they went in too soon. nd this statement was afterward corrobor- ted by auother. In stercotyped sentences they said that they dil not have to work hard, yet when the reporter sugwested that they ought to be pr 1z, one weary player romarked that ko “was tired of practicing, s o had boen at ivall day loug day after day." Sherwood states that the boys are all or- poons and the boys thomselves make the same statement, but when closely questioned 1t was found that one has both pavents living and at least one other has a mother. Sherwood discourses glibly of how much he is doing for the boys and of the sacritice ho is making to take them along. Ho cheerfully imported the information that he was worth §5,000, ana had an incomne of §,000 a year, yet he insisted that tho band was barely paying their own expenses. He claimed that thoy were raising money to build an educational institution at Pensa- cola, Kla, but was surorsingly short of knowledro as to tho lans or sizo of the building. 1e merely know that seven acres of ground had been purchased just outside of Pensacola and work on one wing of the building begun, but he could not toll in what state the work now is. Ho suid ho raised 8,000 last year, but for some reason he has turned over no money for the past eight mouths ‘The money turned in last year was col- Jected by himn as agent of the church and not raisea by tho band. Whenever he nolds a meoting be takes the entire collection, which is dovoted to his expenses, yet he admitted that this was the third city where he had to pay board since he has been out. Ho gener- ally goes to the parsonage and the boys are quartered upon mewmbers of the congroga- tion. The *'Kov. Dr." was asked where he ob- tained his title, and confessed that he was not educated, and his degreo was conferred by the “albumen” (presumably alumni) so- cioty of the Divinity high schiool of Wash- fngton, N. C. Sherwood said that the so- cloty was autorized to confer the degrees of B. D, D. D and D C. L on peoplo Whether they wore entitled to them or not, He intimated that ho know his business, and that tho title of *doctor” was of uso to'bim. He said that the boys handled the monoy, and spent what they choose, but this was very lamely corroborated by the vboys them- selves. Ho claimed that every boy collectod money on the stret, but they insisted that it | was taken possession of by the leader. | The Afro-American leaguo is taking a deep interest in the case and anxiously awaiting dovelopments. 1f it is found advisable to take the boys away from Sherwood, the | leaguo will do all in its power to provide for | | | thom ®In reforring to Mrs, Walker, Shorwood re tedly callod hor a_liar, notwithstanding the fuct that her truthiuliess aud veracity are vouched for by Rev.
