Farmers' Alliance Practically Con- trols the Legislature. Lovisvieeg, Ky, Aug 3.—With aquiet election Kentucky has today elected a full state ticket, adopted a constitution a chosen alegislature to euforce ‘Tha state ofticers elected ave: Goveraor, Jobn Young Brown of Henderson; lieutenaut governor, M. C. Alford of Lexington; attorne roneral. W. J. Héndricks of Flem- ingsburg, aud an auditor, treasurer, superintendent of public iustruction, register of the land office and clerk of the court of appeals. Al democrats and go in by majorities from 20,000 to 40,000. The republican party has not had in A, T. Wood of Mount Sterling so aggressive and popular a candidate as Bradley was four years ago, and the democratic majority will probably show an increase, Returns are now in, how- ever, from only fifty outof 119 counties, and returns ave not full from those. The new constitution has carried with a sweep and the majority for itis placed at anything from 50,000 to 100,000. It was noy lost in a single county and in some cases the vote in its favor has been practically unani- mous, That it would carry has been con- ceded vor since the Courter- Journal withdrew from active opposition, but the large majority i3 ®& great surprise to its oppouents. These have included some of tho best known and_ablest public men in the state, including Senator Carlisle and Governor Buckuer. Governor Buc.nor, though a delegate in the constitu- tional convention, said he couid not bring himself to vote for'its worlk. The people's party has polled only about twenty thousand votes. These have come mostly from the republican party and from the cities. While the alliance was supposcd to be back of the people's party, it has done very little for it on account of the dissension which arose last January, and which caused the retirement from the alliance presidency of S. B. Erwin, the people's purty candidato. The alliance has devoted itself to the legisla- ture and probably bas vractical control of that body and so will controll the revision of the laws under the new ‘constitution. In only o few instances has the alhances put out candidates in onposion to the democratic nominees and then ithas takea care to con- trol the democratic nominations. So while the legislature will bo nominally democratic, it will have strong alliance afiilliations and tondencies, This may make its interpreta- tion of tho anti-trust, the anti-corporation and the railroad commission feature of the new constitution very nearly what the alii- ance leaders desire. In several mstances where the alliance has made legislative nominations it has won. This is notably true at Owensboro, where Petit and Berkhead, the alliance nominees, have been elzcted by 200 to 500 wajoritics. Petit is the former reading clerk of the national house of representatives. As a beneficiary of the democratic party heis bitterly condemned for his defection to the alliance. He has never been a farmer and is not a member of the alliance. Petit is a candidate for speaker of the house of repr sentatives und may get it, Of 223 condidates for the legislature are farmers. In twenty-three legislative dis- tricts all the eandidates were farmers. In thirty-one other districts tho nominees were of the dominant party, sothat theve is al- most absolute certainty thut fifty-four far- mers, more than half the whole number of members, have been elected to the house. In addition to Petit and Berkhead the allinnce has elected state candidates, Bruner at Litehtield, J. k. Durbam at Greensburg, and W, B. Stewurt of Hogenville, and the farmers will have a good majority.
