People Who Were Looking to Get Something for Nothing are now Just a Little | it Dubious About It, Those who have become members of the Mutual One Year Henetit order of Boston, | Mass., are considecavly excited over tho alleged crookedness of one Frank Powell, who has been stopplng at the Hotel Gordon for the past three weeks, while working up the order. According to tho cireulars which were distributed by the organizer, thero wero two classes of benefits, either one of which the members might join, tho classes being called indowment Class A" and “Iife Class B.” The initiation fee wus £ for eith s. A person joining class “A," 50 some of t ose approached were told, might at the end of one year, and aftor an invest- ment of about #40, draw out #100. Class “BY offered a co-operative life iusurance at the rate of about # per year per $1,000. By this sort of inducoments a couple ef lodgges weve orgauized, one by G. W. Spur- rier of this city and the other by Powell him- self. 'The first lodgo consisted of thirteen members, ten of whom took certificates of 81 in cluss A, which entitled them to 3100 at the end of the year after paying the required assessments amounting to about $57. The other three took £1,000 each insurance in class B. The sccond lodge consisted of twenty-two members, Powell a day or two ago asked Bd. Wright to become w deputy organizer and start a ludies' lodge. Wright was not willing to go it blind so le took the precaution before he accopied the position to telegraph to the stato auditor J. A. Lyon, at De: Moines, to find out Whether the'company was registered in due form. He reccived that the Mutual One ¥ telegrar onnouncing ar Benefit order was not authorized to do business in Towa., Th anuouncement spread quickly among the members of the lodges, and it was not loug until every one clamorir money beck. As stato of affairs, I w oon as Spurrie s 7 toget bis learned tho ted around to notify all whose signatures he had taken that tie would pay all of them of his own pocket, in case the comvany turned out not 1o be what it had beeu reprosented to be. Adams is among those wiiose tames appeared on the charter of the lodee which Powell organized, He now clanns that he gave Powell no authority whatever to put in his name with the other applicants for ad- mission to the order. Yesterday morning ho sent word to Powell that he wished to ‘seo him, but _the gentleman, who was standing not fur off, immediately turned and walked in the opposite direction, showing plainly that he did uot care to have much to do with the boot and shoe man just then, Adams weat to the oftice of City Attorney Stewart and wanted something done, but just whathe did oot know. He was told ihatif be wunted to he could have Powell arrested on a charge of obtaining under false pretenses, but Adams some one else to take the responsibility, so no information was filed. Yesterday afternoon Gorden, and th had loft the cit Powell left the notel rumor has circulated that as well, m order to get away from the cousequences of his business transactions. City Attorney Stewart was asked s tothe truth of this report. He stated that Powell was all right, acd he | would guarantee that he would when heis wanted for trial, if he ever is wanted. A telegram has been sent to the headquarters of the order, in Boston, notify- ing the management of the predicameunt their representative is in. A telegram was re- ceived yesterday afternoon announcing that their certified papers are now on their way to the state auditor at Des Moines for filing. Powell has asked Adams and the other mem- bers of the lodges who are now dissatistied and are trying to get out of tha organization 0 wait before taking any decisive step until more 15 heard from 'his company. He states that if he finds that the company for which be is working 15 a fraud he will pay back to tho members of the local lodges all the monay which he has received from them, if 1t bankrupts him. City Attorney Stewart thinks that he is perféctly honest in the sta.cment. The prospects now are that in the course of a few days the members of the lodges who have been frightened half out of their wits by finding out that their com- pany liad not complied with all the legul formalities, will find out also that it is a straight business concern, and will do all it protiises.
