Vincent deliv- ered a lecture on Dickens in the moraing to a good audience. His clear delincations of acter und his power of combining the esting with the instructive have been nowhero better shown than in this lecture, | and it was listened to with g 1terest. The afternoon sossion was given up to the temperance people, and they had a very en- thusiastic time, J. KSlien Foster, the patr on goddess of lowa prohibitionsts, was present d delivered one of her characteristic ad- dresses, At the close of Mrs. Foster's effort, which was received with many mani festa- tions of enthusiasm, Rev. Allan Clark ad- dressed the people, In the evening a grand concert was given by the Towa State band and the Swedish male quartette, assisted by Miss Bertha Bayliss of Omaha and other well known soloists, The selections by the band were rendered with the samo precision and briliiaucy of exceution that has character- s performances all during the season, and from the time the first strains of the ‘Poet and Peasaot: Overture” were heard until the close of the “Star Spangled Ban- ner,’ the closest attention was given them., The p m included “La Gitana Waltzes,” by Bucalossi, and “Awnkening of the Lion,” by Delontzki. Mr. John Satmon, the soloist of the band, played a cornet solo entitled “Weber's Last Waltz," in an_elegant man- ner. Probubly the greatest hit of the occa- sion was the descrip tive piece, “The Night Alarm,” by D. W. Reeves, in which the scencs that accompany a midnight fire wero trayed most vividiy. The members of the Swedish male quar- tette acquitted themselves nobly, and only increased the good opinion that the audience formed of them on their first appearauce. The case of the state against Charles Car- peuter 15 on trial in Judge Estelle's court today. The defendant has been in jail for several months on the charge of robving the dead. All of the old citizens of Omaha ro- mewber Colonel William S. Jones, a hurmless old man, who was one of the early settlers of the state, For a number of years prior to his death he made his home at Eleventh and Far- nam streets. Last fall he was taken sick and died November 2. Fora number of wecks prior to bis death Carpenter had administerced tw his wants, Death came suddenly and at the same timo the watcher disappeared. 1t was known that Jones was the owner of u old wateh and considerable money. After denth a search was made for this property, but it was not to be found. On account of Carpenter’s sudden disappearance, —sus- picion rested upon him to such an extent that detectives were placed upon his trail. A few days later he cturned to Owaha and was arrested by Do- tective Savage. Upon being searched at the central station, he yielded up the watch formerly owned by the dead man and a large sum of money. His defense uow is, that Jones gave him the property prios to his Qdeath. The case against Carpenter was closed and submitted to the jury at b o'clock last even- ing. An hour later a verdict of *not guilty) was reterned. Carpenter was at once re- cd from custoay and given possession of property that was taken from bim at the time of bis arrest. Judge Doane disposed of a vast amount of business yesterday. Last season W. J. Paul put up a numoor of fine brick houses at Twenty-sixth and Harney streots. Caso & Kennedy wore tho contractors. In the cou- straction of these houses Lhero was a large sum of money that was never paid. Mort- gagoes to the amountof 35,000 were executed and lions amounting to §20,000 wore filod, the defendants claimiog pay for labor and material, It was agreed that the cases, some thirty in number should be tried at this term, and with this understanding 150 law- yers' were bofore Judge Doaue tolay. ~ Some of the parties to the suits were not ready, while others wanted to tuke judgments. AS a compromise, and to make all_ interested parties feol satis’ fled, the cases were continued until the noxt term of court, Leo Hart has commenced suit and asks to be divorced from his wife, Ellen. The couple nave been married sinco 1857, The busband now charges that his wife is a drunkard and pou any occasions has threatencd to tako his life, William Cassidy who has been in the county juil for several weeks on the charge of rescuing a prisoner wus releasod this morning and the case dismissed from the criminal docket. Cassidy resides in Soutn Omaba, Oune evening he was sitting in a saloon wnen an officer entered ana with his club comvenced to beat a small boy about tho head anda face. Cassidy denounced th beating and intimated that the policeman was drunk. Whilo this was going on the lad went up stairs, jumped out of tho window and escaped.
