It was a portrayal in the most vivid and realistic manner of the life and customs of the com mon people in the time of Christ, and their habits and customs today, for, the lecturer explained, the passing of the centuries have wrought 1o changes in tho wanners and habits of th people in the agricultural and pastoral dis- tricts of Palostine. The laly was born aud partially reared amid the Scenes she por- 1 she drew her pictures with such idness that it required little aid from the imagination to couvince the audi- ence that they were gazing at little bits of scenery, and 1nto the homes of the people to whom Christ preached. The lady was at- tired in the native costume of a rich farmer’s wife, and by the costumes of her nssistants she gave a striking idea of how the other clusses look and five. The object of her los- son was to show that the bible is a living book, and that mauy of the parables and ' expressions in~ the new testa- ment were taken from customs and habits that are unchauged today. Her lecture was & masterpiece of word painting, and the bright bits of real life introduced were brilliant and effective illustrations, appealing with the same simple and convincing force to the minds of the common laborer aud the astute theologian. Thero was not a second wlhen the attention of all was not enchained and the hour passed too swiftly even for the dullest. The lecture concluded the lady’s engagement with the Chautauqua mana, for the present year, and there was intense rogrot when she made her salaams and bade adieu to the audience in_the effusive and de- monstrative manner of the east. Meeting of the Passengor Association Coa~ oluded Without D.fidite Action. BACKBONE OF THE BOYCOTT BROKEN, Pres de it tothe Jzan’s Oase May Not Questions at Tse a Go ury Narrowed to Technicality. sue Ciieaco, July 8,—Ths Weste association closed its monthly meetine today without touching upon the questions that on account of the differences be and the Alton. rn Passengor nave arise tweon Chairman Fin spocial meeting of managers has beon called for next Saturday moruing to consider this matter, and if possible to bring about a sottlement of the diffieulty. It is understood that tho financial backers of the western roads give power to the Westorn managers to call Chairmaa Finley down and to resume peacoful relations with tho Alton at onco. I'his indicates that the end of the fight is at hand and that the result will be a victory for the Alton ny other outcome would mean a demorali zation of rates throughout the weastorn terri tory and that is tne one thing that tho owners the of the roads are most anxious to avoid. But a still more important result would bo un- doubtedly produced by such a concession. It would be equivalent to an enlistment the eastern roads on the side of the Alton in its freight with the eastern lines and could scarcely fail to break the bickbone of the boyeott and once more defeat the moyement to abolisih the payment of pas cott- wissions, At mesting of the association today it was found convenient to posipoue action on many important questions becauso of the uncer- tainty existing as to the Alton's, position Stch was the fate of the pr niform contract on mileage tickets, the report of the committee looking to a moditication of the prosent rules in regard tq cortificato exc sion business, the quostid of adoptin vest excursion rates and the proposition make special rates, for state and interst to fairs, expositions, ete. Action on these ma ters 'were defered until the- next regulur meeting. COAL RATES MANTPULATED, Western roads are much exercised over their loss of the hard coal trafic from eastern mines, which seems to have been almost complotely mounopolized by the Missou Pacific. During the two months from May 1 to June 30 the shipments of coal from tho cast to Omauha and beyond aggregated 462 cars, of which 454 cars went oyer the Mis- souri Pacific road, leaving eight for the other lin During tho same period the Missouri Pa cific got thirty-eight of the forty cars d. tined to southwestern powts. This coal came froia the Lackawanna mines, in which Jay Gould is interested, and the competitors of the Missourt Pacific have no doubt that he is throwing the business to his own road by an advantageous manipulation of rates. Pelsch, an agent of the Omaha line, 5,000 unlimited tickets to Chi- cago at § each, which is $130 under the regu- lar Chicago-St. Paul rate. It is reported bero that the Kansas City will admit the salo of the 5,000 tickets, but will attempt to escape on a technicality. In the afternoon Auditor Healey of the Kansas City road was called to the stanu. He had received 33,000 for 5,000 tickets sold by the road to Mr. Potsch. Charles H. Petsch was called to the stand, and testified that he had a transaction with Egan and Holdrege in which ho bought 5,000 tickets, paying 3,000, At the timo there was a rate war, and the rate was §. I asked Mr. Holdrega' if I could buy tho ticl ets and make them unlimited, and he said no, he would sell me all the tickets I wanted at #7. 1 bought the tickets stamped aud un- punched. They were to be first-class in all respects with o _limitations. Nothing else was said about it at the time. General Pas- senger Agent W. J enyon of the Bur- lington & Northern was called to explain the istinction between limited and unlimited tickets. The government having rested the case with Kenyon’s testimony the defenso moved to dismiss the case, there being no proof of the chacges, but the motion was over ruled.
