I have heard and know of many nobler cxamples than that of the Good Samaritan, says Robert G. Ingersoll in the New York Advertiser, A fow years ago a vessel was disabled at sea and for days was at the mercy of wind and wave. Finally the provisions were exhausted, and at last the men cast lots for the purpose of seeing which one should be eaten. After the lot had fallen on one of the men, Captain Kreu- ger, who was in command of the vessel, said: ‘*No; that man shall not die—he hus a family and I have none, I will take his place,” and drawing a revolver from his pocket, he was about to put a bullet through his «brain, when others 1inter- fered, and said: *‘Let us wait one more day,” and the next morning a suil was seen on the horizon, and they were res- cued. So there is another case, told of a captain who had hoisted the signal of distress. This signal was answered and boats were being lowered from another vessel, but the sea was running so high that the captain of the first vessel or- dered the signal of distress to be hauled down. saying: “We will take our chances; thoso who would rescue us could not live in this storm,”” A littie while ago I heard the story of a Good Samaritan, and this story should be known, and when once known it will never be forgotten. 1 hardly feel at lib- erty to tell the name of this Good Su- maritan, although I received the story from his lips. 1 will tell iv without giv- ing the name. I may get his consent, and if so wiil give his name hereafter. A few years ago—no matter where— in this country, though—u gentleman, a physician, driving two horses attached to a sleigh along a lonely road at night, partially benumbed with cold, was sud- denly startled by a man_who grasped his horses by the bridle and said: “Throw up your hands!” The doctor saw the gleain of the revolver, know his danger, tut instead of throwing up his hands, drew his own revolver as quickly as he could, but_before he could fire, the robber fired and the bullet pen- etrated his left wrist. The doctor then fired and the bullet entered the side of the highwayman, who fell instantly to the earth. It took some time to get tho horses quieted so that the doctor could look back to see what had become of tho man, He was lying in the road. The doctor drove up to him, got out of the sleigh, and found him still alive. There- upon ho put him in his sleigh, took him o town, carvied him to the hospital, had his own arm treated, and assisted in taking care of his assailant. For many weeks this man lingered— for many weeks it was uncertain wheth- er he would live or die—but at last he- became convalescent, and was cured. He had no friends. The doctor gave him employment, and he remaived in his employ for over two years. At the end of thut time he said that he believ- ed himself to be an honest man—that he was willing and eager to go out into the world and fight fairly the battle of lifo. And so, with the doctor’s bless: ing, he went; and from that day to this he has lived the life of an industrious, honest man, This is the noblest example that I know of in the history of our country. My doctor is the “Good Samaritar’ of America. The age of real chivalry has not pussed, The world is nobler “today than ever before. Kato Field Roasts a Flippant French- man to a Turn. I've come neross a vory e sontiment given forth by Cere inthe Paris Figaro, IHere it is: “There is a period in a woman's lifo that belongs to love and to children. It is only before or affer this period that she is the oqual of man, and the world will be saved when this theory shail have boen adopted. It takes a man, and & certain kind of Frenchman at that,to coolly deliver him- solf of well-turned drivel regarding a sex which has been so long nccustomed to look at itsolf through masculing oyes as to bo almost incapable of an original opinion. As a woman, T beg to inform M. t. Coro that overy period of u woman’ life should belong to love and to chil- dren. And, for tho matter of that, so should every period of a man’s life; for the man who does not love some ono botter than himself to the day of his death is a selfish animal that has failed to attain nobility of churacter, without which real manhood is impossible. Not to love childron is not to be humane, and not to be humane is to disgrace humanity. Of cour T know wh M. St Cero means. Ho has the impious insolence to infor that maternity is an inferior func- tion, and that_only before and after the period of child-bedar a woman the equal of man! Will M. St. Cere please state what is tho greatest mission of the human race? Is it writing books, painting picture inventing machines, making money, or nging cforth immortal souls in stal- wart bodies for the good of earth and the glory of God? Yet when engaged in this highest of all duties, woman is inferior to. her husband who pa‘ls, or writes, or invents, ov sells sugar and to- bacco, or drives fast horses to kill time What ineffable bosh! With due deference to the stupendous conceit of a Boulevardier, the world would be lost, not saved, were such a theory as this Frenchman propounds to be adopted. When woman learns hor great mission, self-respeet will reach its highest level while bearing the respon- sibility of two souls. On that glad day it will be woman who demands of man that he shall stand upon her high plane and do his pact in forming the disposi- sition and character of the coming gen- eration. “This pitinbly ignorant Boule- vardier little knows how much antenatal influences have to do with the evolution of good and evil. Hall the wrong in the world, if not more, can be traced to the bratal treatment of mothers by their so-culled protectors and superiors at the momentous time when a man’s lifo should be dedicated “‘to love and to children.” One would think that crea- tion were as eutirely dependent upon woman as in the days of the Virgin Mary, and that man as husband and father has no duties he is bound to respect. What colossal idiocy! M. St. Cere has only to consult an honest, earnost ph, cian to be told that love in a household must be mutual to produce satisfactory progeny. The assumption that woman’s intellect is dormant when woman’s body is in the plentitude of its power, is as laughable as outrageous, Take all the women of distinetion, and you will tind that they have done their best worlk, as a rule, be- tween the years of twenty-five and forty- five. When did George Sand and Georgo Jliot write their greatest novels? When did Mrs. Browning produce “Aurorn Leigh?” When did she conceive her exquisite “Sonnets from the Portu- guese?” Did not Harriet Beecher Stowe rock a cradle as she planned ‘“Unclo Tom’s Cabin,” which sowed the seed of a revolution that emancipated millions of slaves But why traordinary Jacques St. waste further thought or space on a productof the cafes who has no more idea of the greatness of woman than he hus of the littleness of some men! e Do not forget that Haller's Pan Paralyzer will cure all casos of dyseotory, relioving the griping pain and restoring the bowels to hoalthy action, e A Finished Prayer. The Whatcom (Wash.) Reveille doseribos it as follows: It is a small cove or inlot, complotely shut out from tho obsorvas tion of those who pass on the stoamers plying the waters of the sound, and for many years it was unknown to any save tho wary smuggler who plied his unlawful business botweon the ports of British Colum- bia and Bellingham bay, Hidden in the jungle away from the eyesight of the passerby, was built a commodious cabin in which those men would collect on their way to and from their various points of destination. Dan Harris, the founder of Fairhaven, when ulive ana resident of the bay cities, could tell many interesting stories and weird tales of the meotings which had taken place at Smugyglers’ cove when chased by rev- enue cutters and officors of the law. Many tons of contraband goods had beon collected here and hid away and kept for wecks and months wait- ing for an opportanity when the vigilance of the oflicars would relax and thus give them a chance to disposo of their wares, This was for many years a favorite resort of Smuggler Keiloy, and many a boat has been unloaded hore and hid away in us locality among the rocks and cliffs adjoining, and then suddenly mado his appearance before his pursuers showing clonn and guile- less haads. Tho snot is & most romantio one and only valuable for its romance. Soveral streams of pure cold water find their way into the waters of Bellingham bay through tho glades and jungle which surround the cove, thus making it a most desirablo spot for excursion and picnic parties, and of late years it is being much used for that purpose. Not far from here, farthor to the north, is almost a countorpart in Deepwator bay, although not so thor- oughly hidden from view. In this littlo bay comes tumbling down a precipice for a hundred feet or moro quite a cat- aract, which was at one time used by the steamers which eame to the bay as a watering place. Tho land at this point was tiken up soveral years ago by an eccontric lady from St. Louis, who fell in love with the spot while on a tour of inspection of tho beauties of Pujot sound. Although the land is now unoc- cupied it cannot be bought at any price. - - A Cara. IL R. H. Albert Edward chanced, so it is said, to be whiling away part of a long summer afternoon with two or three congenial spirits, young men of rank ard position near enough to his own to make even discus- sions on domestic questions possible, and the matrimonial outlook for one of the party was brought up. Colonel —— drew from his pocket the photograph, as he supposed, of his fianceo to show it proudly to his companions. But in- stoady of Lady ——'s likeness there ap- ved a rather poorly taken carte do te of the most charming girl the 1co’s oyes had _eyer rested upon—a e e simple little whito gown and loose white jacket, with a black velvet ribbon circling her throat, and her haiv smoothed buck from her brow, loaving the beautiful young face to bo admired for itself alone. The quaint littlo photc graph had not left tho prince’s keeping when . few days later he again, and quite by chanco, encountered at tho house of a certain duchess the same no- ble young face, this time exquisitely lmiutml in’ miniature, the property of a ady who had just returned from Don- mark.
