Frederick Davis, secretary of the Wer- Shugart implement compauy in this city, has 1ust concluded an extensive inquiry into the coudition of the winter wheat crop in soutn- ern Nebraska. To emphasizo the glowing reports sent in by the numerous special cor- respondents of tho firm samples of wheat and barloy were received from several conntles in the southern part of the state yesterday. They are gencrous-sized sheaves, and aro now oceupying places of honor in'the win- dows of the ware rooms on Main strect. ‘Phere are two sheaves of wheat, one of the benrdless variety and tho other bearded. The stalks are over three and a half feet high with heads nearly six inches long filled to the extreme tp with big plump grains. The sheaves were cut at random, but a care- ful inspection does not reveal o blighted grain. The stalks aro very strong and woody, capablo of withstauding any ordinary storm. The rye sheaves are over five and a half foet higk, “developed to the same extraordinary degree in fibro aud grain. ““Thero never was such & prospect for wheat in Nebrasks," said Mr. Davis in speaking of the samples, *In the two south- ern tiers of counties for a distance of 200 miles from the river the country scems to bo one vast field of winter wheat and rye, and every acro of it will vield from twenty-five to furty bushels. More fields will yield forty bushels than twenty. In thesa countios neurly one-half of tho total cultivated area is covered with winter wheat. 1t will make one of, the grandest harvests tho state has ever scon. Although thiere have boeu somo severo storms these grain ficlds have not been in- Jured to uny “approciable oxtent. This is argoly due to the fuct that seed was planted with the new press drills, that puts the sced grain two inches below the surface and gives tho plant an anchorage in the soil sufticient to enable it to resist heavy winds und rain storms. Last year we sold 500 drills in this locality, but our sales this will reach over one thousand. In my opinion the arill bas effected the solution of the win- ter wheat problem, and there will bo but littlo spriug _wheat ‘sown in that ter.itory horeaftor. The farmers, when they ar sured of such harvests as this year, plant moro winter wheat and grain than uny other kind. “The parvest will b vipe within ten days, and if tho ralus do not interfere the two southern tiers of counties in Nobraska will mako a record thit will attract the attention of the worid.” Gesaler's Magic Headache Wafers, Cures all beaduches in 20 minutes, At all druggists 'or beauty, for comfor of the complexion, use only Pozzoni there is nothing equal to it. bt Umbrella Sale. las and parasols on salo at ut the Hostou Store, Coun- for imy meut powder, Su 1,500 sun uu actual cost todu cil Bluft:, Ia, Try Duquette & Co.’s Pomona fruit juice tabléts. There is o rumov that Colonel Dailoy, who had been holding the position of captain of the Dodge Light Guards for about a year pust, will resign his post to mako room for a successor who is vet to be named. The colonel does not enjoy the the active military work as well as'he did years ago, and that accounts for his non-atiendance at drill of Iate. It s suid Captain Scarff, who hus been captain of the Omuha guards for several yoirs past until within the last few months, would be willing to fill the vacancy made by Colonel Dailey's resignation, if it takes place, and 1t is probable that ho will be the ficst man to receive an invitation to take the posi- tion, as many of the members of the com- pany tily in favor of him. How the Regulations are Observed at South Omaha—Quarantined Cattle. ho inspection is most thorough,” said Dr. Stewart, now at the Swift packing house at South Omaha, on being asked to detail the whole course of beef inspection under his instructions. “In tne first place, while the animals are in the company’s yards a caveful inspection is made of each bullock before it is allowed to be driven in the slanghter house. Then as soon as the animal 18 on the slaughteriug floor a critical, inspectlon is made of all the vital orgaus and if found free from diseasoit {s passed. Our examiuation on the killing floor consists of a caveful handling and occular examination of the entrals and parts of every carcass and the possibility, of questionable meat passing is reduced to the minimum, “After the inspection the halved carcasses are put in the coolers, and there romain ready for shipment. Before being shipped each quarter 1s tagged with the government tag, certifying to the inspection and the pur- ity of the product.” “We inspected 138 beeves Friday, and afterward the carcasses and the vital organs, and on Saturday #44, and have not found a singie questionable animal,” Manager A.
