THE CONDITION OF TRADE. The Heavy Gold Shipments Attract the At- tention of Business Men, NATIONAL BANK FAILURE IN NEBRASKA. The General Wholesale Trade Holds B0 Upas Well as Could Be Expected at This Season of the Year, 4 shipments of the past few of finan- The heavy g weeks have axtracted the attention ciers in all parts of the country and in New York the movement has been viewed with some alarm. At the same time, no unfavor- able results have shown themselves and, if anything, legitimate business is in better shapo now than it was before the movement of gold commenced, In local financial circles an increased de- mand is noted for money, and some claim that the market is hardening as a result. At some important trade centers a closeness is reported in the money market, as at Cincin- nati, St. Louis, Detroit and Cleveland. ‘The past week has witnessed the failure of n small national bank in_Nebraska, that of the Central National at Broken Bow, but the causes which led to it were purely of a_local character and for that reason of no great im- portar.ce to the general business int sts of the state. THE WHOLESALE TRADE @m. of Omaha can be summed up in & very few words, “good as could be expected ut this time of tho year.” This is true, too, in the faco of the unfavorable weather of tho pist week o moto. Country ronds have nmany localities been ~ 8o bad that farmers could not get into town to do much trading and in othes local- ities where there was not so much raiu every one has been busy at work in the cornfields, This has resulted in a light trade for the country retail dealers and the jobbers us a matter of course foel the effects of it to some exten he wholesale houses say that retail stocks thronghout the country have been pretty low, but though their orders wero smail they were frequent. Orders for fall stocks are beginning to come in. S0 far as this market is concerncd, everything appears bright and fnviting. There is thorough con- fidence established between buyer and seller* and each expects big returns when the sea- son’s activity shall have set in, Not in years hayo the prospects been so cheerful. "The splendid crop prospects in Nebraska still . continue and it is on thut that merchants in all lines of business are basing their hope for the future. While the rains have delaved work in the fields to some extent and while the corn crop is a little backward nothing at present indicates anything else than a bounti- ful crop for Nebraska. Krom all over the state come reports indicating that the farmers are very hopeful which is itself isa very good sign that the crops are doing well. In New York principals and brokers alike 11 the grocery business are disposed to com- plain somewhat over the irregalar and com- moderate volume of trade. They muke no accusation of forcing efforts on part of buyers, or disposition to remain idle when wood use can be scen for supplies, but seem to think a certan amount of supertluous caution 15 exhibited that might with safety be aban- douca tb some slight degree in favor of many goods that are known to be scant in second hands, and are valued upon cheap lines in bulk lots. The consumer, the retailer aud tho jobber, however, are all free from the least inclination of speculative churacter, and it seems to be an impossibility to stir them into free investment. In domestic dry goods at New York the amount of business transacted during the ‘week under review has not reached the pro- portions noted during the preceding two weeks, but it has had the somewhat more satisfactory feature of being better distri- buted, Buyers, who have been present in considerable numbers, have not found special conditions in certain quarters so tempting as before, prominent agents handling corpora- tion goods having in some instances with- drawn extreme concessions then made, owing to a tangible reduction in stocks through recent operations. The wholesale clothing trade has been more intent upon re- ducing the stocks of manufactured goods car- ried by it than desirous of increasing its en- .gagements in the cloth market, and numer- ous special clothiug sales at cut prices or by auction have fairly monopolized its attention. The sound condition of the shoe trade in general in New York, is so well assured that the recent failures have not produced any articular anxioty. The natural result has en to infuse a spirit of caution on all sides, At, as a rule, the sellers of leather and sup- pliés would prefer to make larger sales 1o shoe manufacturers than the latter are will- ing to contract for. Collections will be looked afte= shurply fora time, and houses with small resources may have their lino of credit curtailed a little, but in general there will be no change from former conditions, COUNTRY PRODUCE, In this line of business there has not been much to interest the dealer, though thero have been some fluctuations in prices. In a goveral way it may bosald that recalpts have A s T “as the traditional door nail, ecn light, though' avout up with the de- mand. This state of affairs has not been pro- ductive of a very active market. Eggs were in such light receipt that the market stiffened up and a good many eggs sold as high as 141¢c, a good prico for this season. The arrivals have been taken very readily by the trade and there has been no tendency toward accumulation. ‘The butter morket has been devoid of any features of gencral interest. The local ro- tail demand is limited and a very large vro- portion of the arrivals goes to the packers at steady prices, Thé poultry market has also been about steady, there being very little change in prices. THE PRUIT MARKETS are better supplied, or rather present a larger variety, than was the case a week or two ago. In addition to strawberries, which still command a good deal of attention from the trade. peacnes ave commencing to ar- rive and cherries have become very plentiful, IN VEGETABLES "There is not wuch of interest. Old potatoes have been stiffening up owing to the decreaso of stocks, and right good potatoes are not at all plenty. SPECULATIVE MARKETS, Wall street appears to be falling mto the dumps again. The Daily Investigator of New York says in _commenting upon the sit- uation: “The stock market is almost as dead Tt is a source of {nfinite disgust, and weariness of the flesh to the wholo mass of Wall strect brokers and speculators, and the patience of Joo is neces- sary to reconcile them to their lot. At such atime Wall stroet papers scem almost as much & superfluity as blankets in Hindoo- stan or ice pitchers in the Arctic circle. But although their-occupation is, like Othello’s, goue, Wall street men haug on hoping for better times, and iv is to ho presumed thut this stagnation will not last forever, “Shrewd judges are of opinion that within from thirty to ninety days we shall have a bull murket for stocks, and that then they will be able to make up for lost time, But ut_present the prospect is flat, stale and unprofitable.” 3 Railroad managers are hoping groat things from the coming barvests in this country, The great reductions in the cereal crops lust yeur by unfavorable weather seriously crip- pled the railroad business, and this year the prospects seem to favor ereat crops, which will mean great railroad activity and general rosperity for ull the inportant interests hat thrive or suffer with the rumlroad inter- est. The railvonds move everything, and great crops this season will mean general prosperity, OMAHA LIVE STUCK, OMAHA, June 13, 1801, OArrLa—Offictal receints of cattle 1145, as compured with 1.007 yosterday and 1113 Satue- duy of lust week. “The recelpts during the woek wore 675 as compared with 6.020 lust week, The murket wus uctive und higheron destruble grades of both beeves and butcher stock. The sentiment that the drain on the gold re- sources of the country had entirely ended, at leust for the present, hus croated i more con- fident feeling in speculative eircles, and the effort to cover shortd this morning, with a little new buying, mude the liveliest and strongest market for some time. The expectation that the bunk statement would show a material increase in the surplus reserve was not disap- 1 and a guin of over &,000,000 puts thit at over $10,000,000 ngain. The dealings in market, however, presented no marked ge from those of the previous days of this and were sl confined prin- to the grungers, industrials fow other stocks which have an international market, although the foreign operations were insiznificant, The demund from the shorts wassufficient to make n rather sharp upward movement in the first hour, Union Pacific leading the advance, followed closelv by St. Paul, B irlington, Ro'k Islund.
