Cy THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: SUNDAY, "MAY 24, 1801-SIXTEEN PAGES THE CONDITION OF TRADE. the closing | the month thus far Saturday, May 2, 181: company for the week endinz at 5 o'clock p. m. easy on the basis of 5 por cent for oall and 5% per cent for time lonns. Jos The Meeting of the Nebraska State Business Men's Association, THE WHOLESALERS DO NOT COMPLAIN. - Omaha and the Surrousding Territo- vy Approaching a Period of Great Prosperity —The Trade Oute look Was Never Better. - - . Tho event of the past week from a business stavdpoint was the meeting in Omaha of the Nebraska State Business Men's Association. The attendance was largo and a great deal of interost was mauifested in the subjects brought before the association. The business men themselves were unaninous in voting the meeting a success in every respect. The affairs of the association appear to bein o prosparous condivion, and no discordant ele- ment appeared at any time during the ses- sion. Outside of the regulac business for which the meeting was held, these assembiies of business men are generally regarded with favor. A large number of the most active and enterprising of the merchants of the state are thus bro t together, and they cannot help but be mutually benetited. They are emabled to compare notes and advise as to the best methods of conducting the various lines of business. Bv holding the meeting in Omabta the visi- - grs were able to become better acquainted with the jobbers from whom they buy ther goods and to learn something of the methods of handling produce, ete., shipped in here. That they availed themsclves of the opportun- ity was very evident and the different busi- ness houses spent a good deal ot time in showing the straugers through. It was not entirely a labor of love for a number of the visiting merchants left orders with the jo! bers as plensant reminders of their visit. Some who had not been in the hamt of purchasing their supplics here were so well pieased with the large stocks of goods and reasonable prices that they voluntarily promised that Omaha should have their busi- ness hereafter. THE WHOLESALE TRADE of Omgha is holding its own in good shape and the past week has seen a large amount of goods shipped from hereinto the surrounaing territory. As a rule the jobbers have done very little complaining about the condition of trade. They are meeting with good suc- coss not only in holding trade in their own territory but are gradually opening up new districts as Omaha and Omaha business men become better known. Dun & Co. in tbeir trade review of the week report “trade at western cities quiet but very hopeful.” The ftirst is true of some lovalities, especially as regards the retail tride, while the latter portion of the asser- tion is indisputable. Whatever may be the present condition of o« frade one thing is pretty certain, Nebraska and the surrounding territory tributary to | iaba, are on the brink of the greatest com- ‘mercial prosperity ever experienced in the west. Everything is working in this direc- ;€. tion and nothing appears to stand in the way The farmers are confident of abundant crops. the ground being in good shape and everything favorable while condi- tions in Europe are such as to maintain the market for the leading farm products even in the face of a heavy crop in this country, The merchants from the different parts of the ’ state who were attending the convention in y this city were enthusiastic over the outlook for the fall and winter trade and they almost I invariably expressed themselves as looking b for better times than were ever before ex- | perienced fn this section of the country. The recent crop failurs and closeness of mouey in Nobraska drove out of business the weak merchants’ and others who wanted to get out of business made the times an excuse for failure, so that the merchants still in business represent the more solid class of men who bave the enter- | rise to push their trade for all there 1s in it. f the veports of the merchants themselves sre 1o be behieved, the outlook for them is < especially pleasing, and they have reason to fecl confident. With the country enjoying & m, Omaha cannot help but be prosperous. COUNTRY PRODUCE. ] ‘The market has presented some noteworthy features during the past six days. Eggs have been in very light receipt and have sold } largely at 15c—a big price for this season of ¢ the year, The high price does not appear to materially increase the receipts, and all arrivals are picked up f)romplly, Poultry has sold all the week at about : steady prices and the market bas beea devoid of any interesting feature, Butter has been very weak. Eastern mar- kets were in such shape that the packers and shippers could not afford to pay over % l0c or Ib., and as the bulk of the receipts have Faa o ko to thew it follows that the greater proportion of the butter has had to sell at t that range. Some select packages are picked up Ly the local retail trade at a lttle { more money, but the demand from this source Is limited. The bay market has firmed up on the de- crease in the receipts, FRUITS, In the way of fruits about the only thing to attract avy attention has been strawber- = ries. Thoy have been arnving at the rate of two or three cars per day and as prices have been low stocks have moved off freely. The quality of the fruit has been quite good, but this week the St. Louis county berries wiil commence to come, and they have the reputation of being the finest grown, The crop 1s said to be large and the fruit very choice. CONCERNING VEGETABLES there is very little to be said. Potatoes bave been slow and the market is low to what it was last month. Some kinds of new vege- tables aro scarce to what they usually are at “this season of the year. SPECULATIVE MARKETS, This has been a week withont any special feature of chauge in the wheat situation. Copious rains in this country have assured the growing crop of winter wheat aund also a xgry fine stand of the spring sown grain which has had a bearish effect on our domes- market, local operators being very bear. ish. The foreign situation is unchanged since tne last roport and foreigners are rop- ssented to be buyers of our new crop futures Exports of flour and wheat have been quite large, but our home situation has counter- balanced this to such an exteut that the market at Chicago closed Saturday with a loss during the week of 3¢ per bushel, Corn has ruled very weak and with a ma- terial loss in value. “The long expected re- ceipts huve materialized. Tho visible supply 1s expected to again show quite au increass, Prices bave been very soft and thero seems to be a great dea! of long stuff thrown on tho market from all directions, as well as a con- tinued hammering by local bears with large lines of shorts. The market closed with a loss of Tc per bushel for the weck on the July option. The demand for cash corn has ceased almost entirely. It is possible that it Ay not stop here; however;there appears to be no doubt but what the market will be oversold and the reaction caused by tho same must be sharp when it comes. Oats closed on Saturday ata decline of 6¢ r bushel for the week ou the July option, caused by the copious rains. This cereal last week was reportea bclns injured by the drouth, but all fears in this direction are dispelled and many think that they will sell still lower, as the growing crop is doing nicely and the acreage is exceptionally lavge, Provisious have had an uneventful weok, suffering a loss with the general decline in pork. The market in barrelca pork is es- pecially heavy. Many country holders are yet clinging to their holdings and it soems almost impossivle for the mar- @t 0 react as they appear un- illing to take & larger load. Chicago local talent, understandiog, this continues to bammer the warket on anythivg like a re- action and some say will eventually force the county out. It is predicted by provision men of judgment that we may expect to wee pork below $10 before any mate) re- Mction mav be expected, The following are - N o - 445, mixe rices at Chicago for each day of THE SPECULATIVEI ‘M.\RKETS. . 5&"‘:5::1:':,";;”’II‘;.‘Y’:::"':'II":;:::"‘:“;\'.r“dp 0! ard, Ma B et PrOYISIO L JSNCRIFTS. — No. 1 northern, May, 8L03i; July The Money Market. il Tork. Proven to Bel & to a Kansas Jail Breaker. George W. Brown donies that he is (George Heudricks, but his photograph says that he is uu accomplished prevaricator. Friday night George was arrested as a vag by Ofticers Hudson and Walkor, after quite a chase, and locked up. Yesterday morning Sergeant Sigwart thought ho had seen thay face before, and on looking over a lot of photos phs that ave kept on file at police head- riers, not necessarily for publication, but @s an evidence of wood faith, he discovered an astonishingly good likeness of Goorge, for whosearrest, by the way, a reward of $25 is offered, It seems that Mr. Brown-Hendricks broke Jail at Hiawatbu, Kan., last September, and since that time he has been roaming free as a bird wherever fancy and good judgment dic- tated It would seem that discretion would have kept him away from Omaha, but he didu't think so, bence his grief. nortly after his prisoner’s escape, Shorift Cashman came to Omaha in search of his man, but although he was hero at the time and, in fact, hus been here ever since the officers iled to locate him. Brown was a brakeman and was arrested for disposing of mortgaged property. He was very indignaat over ms arrest, an it was not until he was shown the photo- graph that he weakened and admitted who he was. He denied that he sawed his way out of jail, but insisted tkat a couple of friends of his, an engineer and conductor whose names be refused to give, sawed their way into the juil three aays before the time sot for his trial, and he merely walked out through the hole. His wife,” who was em- ployed about the jail during his incarceration there, departed with him through the samo aperture, Since tueir residence in this city, the pair have lived at 1310 California street, and a complaint was lodged against the woman some time ago, charging her with being a street wilker, and an officer was detailed to watch the place, but he failed to run across Brown, who kept himself very close. The woman is much smooter than her husband, and when the latter was unbosoming himselt to the detectives this morning she remarked, hut your mouth, yvou blamed fool, don't vou see that they re just trving to pump youf™ Brown was told thattho sheriff was com- ing after him, but he said he would not go back without a requisition. —~—— De.
