A meeting took place, as had been au- nounced, Suturday aftornoon, between the munagement of the Chautaqua Assembly as- sociation and President Stewart of the Omaha and Council Bluffs Bridee company. Manager Huzelton presented to President Stewart what he believed to be the ultima- tum in the way of propositZons, but was not able to give that gentlemun what he wanted, and the consequence was that he received no encouracement that the line would be buiit. In conversation about the matter Mr. Stewart said that the company wanted the uassociation to gurantee a per cent, grade between the city and the as sembly grounds. The ussociation would only guarantee o b per cent. grade, He was con- viuced that the building of a line to tite grounds would mean a loss to the company of several thousand dol- lars every year, and he saw no reason why they should build a motor line that would increase tho value of the praperty along the road, belonging to a syml}mlo, unless they could share the profits. As there could apparently be no agrecment reached as to the grade he did notsee that there was any use of prolonging the negotiations. Manager Huzelton states that he has abouv give. up all hope of getting the motor line out to the grounds this year. He thinks tho only thing that is left is to get tho best terms possible from the Rock Island and Milwavkeo railroads, He has assurances that better facilities will be secured than bave cver been hud before, and the railroaas will probably furnish the principal means of transportation to and from the grouuds, as heretofore. Thirty disgusted Council Bluffs sports re- turned early yesterday morning from South Omaha where they had been %0 witness the glove contest between Rogert Rhodes of Avoea, and an “Unknown” of this eity. It had been rumored Saturday that the un- known would be Charles Allen, who has won large batches of notoriety at different times by his fistic contests in which he has come out second best, and by his regularity in turning up at the police station, “drunk and disorderly,” no one, however, thought that be would' have the hardihood to present bimself in the ring before an antagonist who had alveady whipped oue man. He did, how- euer, and that was why the Council Bluffs sporis came away in disgust. Only two rounds were fought and at the end of the sec- ond Allen failed to come to time, After eight minutes of fighting the game was given to Rhodes by default. The £0 whica had been put up by Allen’s friends, together with that put up by Rnodes, were given to the victor, Allen brought away two black eyes and nu- merous cuts and Lruises on various parts of his face, while his antagonist came away without a scratch. ~ But little money changed hauds on the result. | Try Duquette & Co.’s Pomona frait juice tablets. ‘Lney are delicious. It canuot be described, Pouring over a precipice 160 feet high, the immense volume of water of Niagara river, the outlet of the great lakes finds its way toward the ocean. On either sie of the river are cplendid views of this tremendous waterfall, above it and below it and ali about it are other scenes which have | attracted travelers from all parts of the world. Gout island, the burning spring, the whirlpool rapids, the suspension bridge, are incidents merely to visit to Niagara falls. The fleld on_which the battle of Lundy's Lane was foughtis within a few minutes driveon_the Canadian side. The facilities for visiting all points of interest on either side of the river are superior. The regula- tions controlling access to and from the sev- eral points now provent the exorbitant charges which were formerly almost as fam- ous as the cataract. A day or a fow days at Niagara falls is one great ovent in an_aver- age lifotime, and no American should ever | think of visiting tourist resorts abroad until he has scen Niagara falls. He can have no appreciation of power; of grandeur, of awe- inspiring beauty, who has missed a visit to this world renowned spot. e, Dr. Birney cures catarrh. Bee bld’g. Perfect Gentleman. I saw on the street an old Nevada friend who used to be in business as a stuge robber, says Arthur McEwen in h an Irancisco letter. His ostensible occupation on the Comstock was that of a curbstone speculator and politician, Being of u genial disposition and having a rich sense of humor he possessed many friends, none of whom suspected the connection between his frequent ab- sences from the city and the robberies which made travel unvleasant. There was much surprise, therefore, when Dave was arrested on a chargeof having stobped the stage- just beyond Dayton one night and got away with Wells Far- go'’s treasury box. What led to his ar- rest was the circumstance that immedi- ately after breaking open the box and loading the sacks of coin upon his horse, he had gone up to the stage, handed a twenty to one of the passengers and hos- pitably said in his well known voice through his mask to one of them, “Judge, you take this and treat the boys when you come to Missouri Jake’s,”” Ie had no difficulty whatever in get- ting bondsmen, for nobody believed him guilty at first. Presently, however, opinion changed, and one of his sure ties came to me and expressed anxiety about the responsibility he had assumed. “Why don’t you get off his bond then?’ I asked, *Oh,” objected the Comstock capital- ist, deprecatingly “that would be rough on' Dave—iind of insulting, don’t you se One morning, the morning when his proliminary examination wus to hay cen held, Dave disappeared. Later the day I met the bondsman and was surprised to observe the serenity of his countenance. 1 said: “Well, you scom to take it mighty easy. They’ll stick you for that $5,000, sure,” “No,” he answi placidly, “I'm all right. Dave acted like a perfect gentle- man.
