James Maher, who has long borne the rep- utation of being one of the champion toughs of western Iowa, added some new laurels to his crown Tuesday night. An assault w made upon a man named Frank Lynch, a stranger in the Bluffs, as he was standing on the street near the Northwestern depot. Lyuch claims that he was minding his own business as well as he knew how, when Maber came up from behind and struck him several fearful blows about the face and head which felled him to the earth and almost stunned him. One wound was madc upon the temple, apparently with a sharp instru- ment of some kind, and the physician who dressed it stated that it would in all probaoil- 1ty have ‘)ro\'ud fatal had it struck a quarter of an inch higher. Another deep cut just missed the jugular vein. Maher was placed behind the bars of the city jail yesterday morning on_an informa- tion filed by Lynch, charging him with an assault with iutent to kill. He was seen by a reporter yesterday morning, to whom he stated that he had not the slightest recollec- tion of the affair, and thought he must have been under the influence of liquor when it occurred. Lynch, however, thought the mo- tive for the assault was robbery. Maher will have a hearing before Judge McGee in a day or two, provided the prosecuting witness does not disappear. e : ‘Iry Duquette & Co.’s Pomona fruit juice tablets, They are delicious. Manitou is the most attractive of the many resorts of Colorado, Lying at the foot of Pike's Peak and at the entrauce of the Garden of the Gods, it invites the tourist and sight seer to the most remarkable formations and tho grandest and most picturesque scenery of that rugged range, Risisnds springs and pure air give new life to the de- bilitated. The Pike's Peak railroad, a murvel of engineering skill, conveys passon- gers to the very summit of the lofty old mountain. From the ton of Pike's Peai all the great mountain peaks of Colorado are distinctly visibie, while to the east its tree- lined avenues at right angles, looking like a checker board in the distance, lies the pretty little city of Colcrado Springs and beyond the great plains of eastern Colorado, A volume could be written, indeed volumes have been written, of the glories of Manitou and Pike's Peak.
