Berry of 1s not constitutionally opposed he evidently believes that c thing else, have their place, and that their place is not in the streets of a city. In con- versation with a reporter yesterday he un- bosomed himself as follows : “While stopping at Creston a few aays ago on one of my trips through the surrounding country I wiis surprised at the enterprise of that city. The new Ewing hotel, as well as the waterworks just lately completed, aro a credit to the town and things of which the people should be proud. But 0 detract from these uew enterprises 1 found the town lively, yes very lively, not only with business, but with the samé com- plat that Fort Dodge was subject to— “cows,” innumerable cows. Cows on the corners, cows in the streets, andin fact even in an old farmer's wagon. This poor man had brought a load of corn to selt and apply the sum realized 10 his taxes, but while he was away from the wagon to find a purchaser the cows got the best of him by eating all the corn and he will have to mortgage his farm or lose it. But under the new admiaistration 1 believe they will remedy this evil and enforee the ordli- ance which I understand this city bas in re- gard to roaming cows. ——— Improvements at Manawa. Elaborate improvements arc about to be made at Manawa in the way of beautifying the place and getting it ready for the season which is about to open. The hotel on the east shore has been moved from its old location, to a place 200 feet west of the pavillion and considerably nearer the lake. The fifteen feet or more of land that intervends between {he lake and the hotel are to be made into a terrace, while all the rest of the town is to be graded and the streets laid out. In addition fo this a dam feet long is to e built along the entire west side of the lake in_order to keep the water which is to run into the lake from - Mosquito creek through the flushing dam at the east side, from ru ning out when the water m the river 15 lower than usual. The contract for all the work has been let to Chbarles Bray, and he will begin operations this morning. 1t is thought it will take about three mouths to complete the improvements, and those who are fesponsible for the making of the improvements state that they will offer better inducements to those who have a desire t0_spend their quarters and half dol- lars that they bave ever had before. —— Thes Manage to Get It. There is a suspicion in polive circies that the law agaiust liquor selling oo Sunday is notas well observed as it once was. A number of resorts are kept open all day Sunday for the sale. of cigars, and it s stated that some- thing of a liquid nature also passes over the counters. Most of the saloons have bar- ricades stretched over the counters on Sun- day, but they ure not strong enough to keep thirsty humanity from getting its dail budge, and in spite of te efforts of the police force to keep whisky out of signt on the fiest duy of the week, in some way 1t manages to come to the frout. The selling is not done openly, however, but is coufined to the patrons who are known to be above ail suspicion 50 far as liability to turn informers is coucerned. Some detective work was done by certain members of the police force last evening, but the sight of a blue t with @ nickel-plated star glistening on his front elevation had the effect of putting the bottles and glasses out of sight in a twink- ling. Chief Cary states that it will be next 1o impossible t0 preveut liquor selling on Sunday with the meager force at his com- mand.
