OFFICIALS HAVE NOT A WORD TO SAY. Burlington Passenger Men Discuss the Boycott—A Fight Over a Car —Gould's Way — Other Ratlrond Notes, The immense amount of sugar being moved in consetjuence of the prospective removal of the duty on that fmportaut commodity on the first of tho month, has caused a lively scram- ble on the part of the railroads to secure a part of the tonnage. Cousequently, it was not surprising to hear charges that rates were being cut. The sugar trust on Satur- day quoted a price free on board in New York $4.50 per hundred pounds and free on board Omaha 8488, indicating that a through rate of 38 cents & bundred _pounds was bewg made, while the tariff with tho inter-stato commerce comn- mission is 45 conts. This is bascd on the net welent of the sugar with no allowance for the weight of the packages in which it is shipped, consequently the rate is cut from 12 to 14 cents a hundred instead of 1) cents, a appears on the surface, Theso rates are made via the Kanawa Despaten Fast Freight line o the Chesapeake & Ohio road, a Vanderbilt line, to St. Louls, and thien over the Missouri Pacific to Omaha. It is believed that the Missouri Pacific par- ticipates in the cut und while the rate is 48 cents per hundred from New York to the Missouri river a tariff quietly filed with the inter-state commorce commission, naming a 40-cent over this route. Private vices were received by many of the rc that the iuter-state = commerco n had decided that, owTng to ain tectnicalities and irregular form, the 40-cent tariff is illegal. If it is estab- lishod that the Missouri Pacific was a party to filing the 40-cent tarift or participates in the cut there will be a lively row at the meeting of the advisory board of the West- ern trafic association in April. The ship- ments of sugar are immense. Havemeyer alone will send over one hundred thousand barrels from New York in the next five days, and the lines which are maintainiug vates are being sadly worsto The Missouri Pacific oMcial have nothing to say on the subject of sugar rates, One of thom observed yesterda; We have the sugar and the other lines have the information.” n this city Row Over a Union Uacific Oar. A Union Pacific raitway freigat car was left Friday on a jolat Union Pacific and Rio Grande Western track at Provo. The car was loaded with lime by a local shipper and billed to Salt. Laka City via_the Rio Grande Western line. The Union Paciflc agent for- bade the Rio Grande Western conductor to take the car; the Rio Grande Western agent counterinanded this order, and as the con- ductor was pulling out with the disputed car in bis possession the rond was barred by a Union Pacitle engino standiug on the Rio Grande Western man track, a joint switch connection being between the two roads. In this position the two engines stood glaring at each other for about two hours. In the meantimo the Union Pacific agent secured a replevin for the carand Colonel Dodge and Superintendent Wolby of tho Rio Grand Western were telographed to at This tle station, about thirty miles distant, These gentlemen surveyed the situation and Super- fntendent Welby ordered the Union Pacific engineer to back off and allow the Rio Grande Waestern train to pass. “I am waiting for signal from the conductor,” replicd the eng neer. The signal camenot and after some fustier purlovinga counior boud was sectred by the Kio Grande Western officials and their tram was allowed to pass. By this time Dodge and Welby had becomo aroused and determined to tear up the switeh conuecting the twa tracks, which they at once proceeded todo. There was some liitle skirmishing be- tweon themen of tho two companies, but finally the Union Paciflo forces were with- deawn and the Rio Grande Western men proceeded with the tearing up. Both sides are at present watching each other very closely. Mr. Gould's Way. There s no longer any doubt that Jay Gould is systematically haudiing all his railroad properties so that they will operate as o harmonious wholo irrespective.of any damage that may seem to bo done to certain rts, says the Denver Times, The division ffic from Omaha to Kansas City is an examplo of this. 1t 15 evident that Mr. Gould is resolved to carry freight to the seaboard by his southern system instead of carrying it t Omaha and Chicago and letting the Van- derbilt lines tako it the rest of the way, His policy thoreforo assumes great importance from beiug the first really heavy blow at the railroad supremacy of Chicago, It must not be forgotten either that Mr. Gould now con- trols the Fort Worth road, tho direct putlet from the northwest to the Gulf of Mexico, and has only tho Santa Fe between him and a dictatorship over an_immense tract of tor- sitory, Bt the Santa Iols o preity big concern, and it is not belioved he will bo ablo %o get Lold of it oven if it is hard up. Boycotting the Burlington. Rumors to tho effect that the eastern trunk lines had mstructed their ticke! agents to di- vert through passenger traflic from the Bur- lington, in order to bring that road into the new auti-commissjon paying agrecment, have been flying pretty thick of late, and General Passenger Ageut EF'rancis of 'the B. & M., was asked |f it wis trae that tho Burlington was paying commissions to agents. . “Wae are paying commissions to eastern agents who sell through tickets over our lmes, and I do not believe the eastern trunk tines will ostablish any boycott against us. Wo are not violating” any trafic or other agreement. The castern lines agreed among thomselves to quit paying commissions and aro not doing 50, but now they are trying to compel other lines 1o do the same thing They have notificd all lines not to pay com- missions to eastern azents under penalty of belugz boycotted, but I don’t beliove the thing: will amount to anything more than tali.’” Notes and Personals, It is said that the Fobruary statement of the Burlington will show a decrease of §500,- 000 in gross receipts. It is stated on good authority that Jack O'Herne, who bas beon in chavge of the stockyards railway at South Omaha, will be appointed as acting master mechanic of the Union Pacific at Portlaud shortly. D. E. Burley, general agent of the Union Pacilic passenger department at Salt Lake, and well known in this city, is coniined to the hospital at Salt Lake with a combination ppe and an abeess in the ear. Contracts hate been signed for the comple- tion of the Kausas City, Bentonville & South- castern road. This road will be built 1n tho interest of the Missouri Pacific, and give that line the shortest route between Kansas City and Memphis. The snowstorm which broke over the west- ern part of thestate yesterday caused somo ombarrassment to railroad traffie. Abouta foot of suow fell in the west and northwest and tied up the Elkhorn and B. & M. lines in too Black Hills, On the Union Pacific be- tween Grand Island and Cheyenne there was some delay on account of the storm, but all the roads were open this morning and o fur- ther trouble anticipated. — Don’t Feel Well, sick enough to consult & vou refrain from so doing for fear you willaldrm yourself aud friends—we will 1L you justwhat you need.
