Four pump- ers are known to have been killed and six or seven are now reported missing. C., Feb. 16.—This city was yester ited by a disastrons conflagration, which destroyed in the neigh- borhood of §500,000 worth of property, and caused the death of John McCannon, a mem- ber of the volunteer fire brigade. The fire was discovered in the rear of the premises of a jeweler on Columbia street, Analarm was turned in, but it was twenty minutes betore a stream of water was turned on the fire. By thattime the whole block of buildings in flames and the fire spread to the dwellings and stables on the street backof 1t. After a two hours' fight, when the firemen had just about got the flames under control, an_explosion occurred in the rear of one of the stores.
