Wolfe, a young man who boards at 1712 Douglass street and attends the Omaha Business college, would, if he entered a con- test for bulcotic verdancy, be awarded the first prize. Yestorday morning about 8 o'clock a man named Pat Keyes, who used to keop abute shop on Fifteenth street east of Jefferson square, called to sce Wolfo and told him that tho Omaha detectives were going to run him m for absconding with funds belonging to his (Wolfe's) wife. Wolfe has had some difficulty with the purtnier of his joys and sorrows and they separated a fow months since, the lady going to her parents at Creston, Ia., and Wolfe coming toOmanatoenter the business college, Koyes had learned that much about Wolfe and proceeded to make him be- lieve that the oficers of the Iaw were about to pounce down upon him, Then Koyes suggested that Wolfe had betfer get out of tho cityas quietly and as quickly as he could, and if there was any way by which ho' could as. sist Wolfe in the departure he would be pleased to do so. olfe was thoroughly frightencd and vould go to the Omaha Savings aw out the moncy he had consented to oblige Mr. Wolfo in that particular, and Wolfe requested an old gentleman mamed D. D, 1l, who boards at the same vlaco, to Keyes to the bank and bring back Keyes and Angell went to the banlk, but Keyes found that he sust present an order or check signed by Wolfe before the m uld be paia over, ) turned 1o Wolfe's room, naturo to a check for the #1350 which he had on deposit, and again visited the bank, where tho money was handed to Keyes, The next step was to secure a Jivery team, Keyes said, and they went to the square bar xteenth near California, whera Georgo Keyes, a brother to the gen: tleman who drew the money, works, and hired ateam. They started up toward ‘the place where Wofe boards, but when opposite the New Yok Life building on Douglas street Keys said to Angel want to run over and sce those lawyers. You just wait here till T come . 1 will only be gone a fow minutes over to the Life building.” Keyes hand WOLFE WAS ked the mone d the lines-to Angell and went in the divection of the New York Life build- ing, turned on Farnam street out of sight, and thus endeth the nrst chapter. ‘When Mr. Angell had heid the team abat half an hour he drove up to Wollo's boarding place and expressod the opinion to the nerv- ous young man, who wanted to et out of town, that Keyes had caught a sucker and dI(I‘uul intend to return of his own free will and accord. Wolfe was dumbfounded, but couli not be- lieve that his whilom friend hadso rathlessly betr his confidence. After waiting an hour Wolfe became convinced, however, that he had been cruclly betrayed, ana he st the team back o the barn and stavted out to look for Keyes. Instead of reporting the matter to the police at_once, he meandered around town until the middlo of the afternoon before placing the detectives in possession of the facts connceted with the confidenco game, the time the officers learned of the affair s may have been many miles from alia, but the detectives seemed quite con- fidentof capturing him. Heis preity wi known in Omaha and his brother and friends are very much astonished at the reoord he made yesterday, He has hitherto borne a good ivputation, Ieyes s a small heasy uilt man with a sindy mustache and is about thirty years old. Wolfe seems to be dazed by the transac- tion, and much depressed by the loss ch was all the money he had. avey said last night thata man & the description given by Wolfe of © to polico headquarters nst Sat- y, accompanied by a woman whom ho introduced as Mrs. Wolfe of Creston, Ia., and who said that she wanted to take out a war- rant for her husband’s arrest, claiming that he was liviog here in' Omaba with another woman., The chief referred the counle to the court officer, who took them down stairs to have the warrant sworn out. Theman finally said that they did not want to have \\'offe arrested, but would like to have an officer o with them to Wolfe's room and scare him so that he would puy over some noney he had in the bank. 'hie woman said that Wolfe had deserted her, leaving her destitute, and she wanted the money to heip Ssupport their baby, which sho had left at Creston. The couplo were informed that Omaha polico officers weregnot employed for the purpose of scaring people into the notion of paying money, and they left the station without tak- ing out a warrant, It is believed by the ofticers that Wolfe was frightened into signing a check which he gave to Keyes, and that after the whole thing was over he decided to regain the money. Keyes has been seen about the city he woman for several days and was v afteroon ou lower Douglas ant was issued for his arrest. * Donot take any chance of being poisoned or burned to death with liquid stove polish, paints or onamels in bottles. It was thought that ~ the admission ‘of the Bluffs would lelp all of the cities iu ob- taining n larger field of horses Tho horsemen favor the idea as it would give them two weeks of racing in tho two cities without the expense of shipping.
