But all off- erings were so quickly absorbed that the crowd turaed around and bought faster and heavier than they started to sell. He recently returned from Wash- ington, M, C., and will visit that city agan in ashort time to attend a meeting of the na- tienal electrical commission, There are three members of this commis- sion. They are Prof. Henry Roland of Johns Hopkins university, Licutenant F. R. Shunk and Mr. Andrew Rosewater, Speaking of the work before the sion, Mr, Rosewater said : “Ore of the most important featurcs of our wock for the coming spring and summer will be a thorough investigation of the va- rious methods for placing electric wires unaer ground. Our attention will, of course, be dirccted toward the needs of Washington city in this particular, but the result of our investigations will no doubt be carefully watched by many of the larger cities, and the conclusions we reach will affect the improve- ments of all cities where the authorities are engaged i solving the over-head wire prob- lem, There are two distinct methods of pro- viding the, necess passage way under ground for electric wires, One is the condnit system and the other the sub-way. Both methods have been tried in some of our lar; cities and each has its mcrits and demeri! The conduit, of course, is & small passag way, and is conducted in seve daif- feront forms and can be made of several kinds of material. The sub-way s asort of dry sewer, lavze cnough fora man to walls in, intended to furni: and gas pipes that are laid in tho strect, the question arises as to whether for the city to construct these lary and charge each company wishing to lay pipes or wires through them a certain rental, or is 1t better to let each company wishing o lay wires in thestreets put in'its own con- duits. ‘Conduits have been found unsatis factory in some instances beause the material used iu comimis- constructing them has been inferior, There are many difficultics that must be overcome before the underground system of electric service ~ will prove cntirely satisfactory. One great hin- drance is the waste of eleciricity that attends the placing of wires so near the ground. This necessitates the laying of double wires, or what is called o metallic circuit, in order that the servico may be thoroughly efficient, W “There is also the dificulty of induction from one wire to another. This necessitates thorough insulation. People who not given the subject close investigation ure not aware of the remarkable inductive power of electricity in the open air.
