During a crowd the other day on Fourteenth street, near Fifth avenue, & very solid man was pushing his way through the mass of humanity, when he encountored a pale, thin young man with the look of a consumptive, Says the New York Sun. Tho big man did not swerve a hair, and the thin young man’s elbow, which was beld out atan angle, took him in the left side. The big man gave a asp, followed by @ curse, and nearly lost his balance, while the other passedon as cool as ice. 'He had turned aside togaze in a window when the big man came up and snid: ‘Friend, I want to feel of your right elbow, the one you gave me a dig with back there, “OM, ‘certainly,” was the reply, as the elbow was extended, “Why—why—it's hard as iron ! “Yes, it is iron. That is, I have an irou cap miade for it. Justa fit, as’ you see, and pad- ded with flannel. 1v's’ an “invention of my own. H. M. Van Arman of Oakland, Cal., who was neting governor of the Torrito- ay of Arizona in 1884, and from the vig- orous measures ho took to suppress the | Indian outrages at that time was known | ns “the fighting governor,” was at the Sherman house, Chicago, the other day. | Mr. Van Arman was a personal feiend of President Avthur, and for his heroic conduct during those exciting days was | complimented by the chief oxecutive, says the Chicago Tribune, It was during the Chiricahua Apache outbreak when Geronimao, was chiet, that 1 brought the reds to their senses,” said My, Van Arman, “Women and children were peing massacreed and their bodies frightfully mutiiated. In order to sup- press the atrocities it was necessary to | take some declsive steps. General Crool was then in command of the department of Arizona, but as the regulars were not familiar with the country and far from | the Blue River region, where the mur- | ders wero committed, I determinee to | call out the mititia. Ialso issued a pro- clamation offering $200 apioce for the sealps of the Indian murderers, and you can wager all you have that I got thom. *The militia was composed of men who knew the country, would fight for the safety of their relatives, friends and homes, and the savages soon discovered that they had resolute men to deal with, and the result was the end of the out- rages. The most exciting fight tho Ari- zona boys had with the savages wus at Duncan’s Mills, and the reds found the whithes more than their equals in hid- ing behind trees and rocks, The entire band would have been ontirely wiped out had it not fled the country during the night. Thero is one singular thing about the way the Indians are treated by the gov- ernment. Inthe Salt river valley there isa tribe of industriovs Tndians that is self-supporting. 1t plows the ground to this day with the samo kind of a sharp stick Kgyptians used, and the members of this tribe get nothing from Uncle Sam. On the other hand, the good-for- nothing savages who are too lazy to work secure thousands of dollars each year to support them, In 1883, $100,000 was appropriated by the nation to resist the murderers belonging to Geronimo’s band. This idea of the Indians b wards of the country is all poppycock. They should be treated like citizens and inuls and the chiefs should not be recognized. If tne governor of Dakota was to treat the Indians the same as I did in 1884 the end of the trouble there would soon be reached. The Dakota militiamen would be heart and soul in the fight, they have their homes to protect. If there is a criminal fund here the governor could offer rewards or scalps, and I will venture tosay he would get all he could pay for.” California being the adopted home of Mr. Van Arman he naturally thinks his state is the greatest in the union and is loud in its praise. “Last year California produced 47,000,000 bushels of wheat more than it consumed, more than $20,000,000 worth of fruit, and 20,000,000 gallons of wine,” said the ex-fighting governor, **That saying a great deal when you take into consideration that the population of the state is not more than that of the city of Chieago, Land there can be purchased for $20 an acre on eight years’ time, and each acre will produce the fivst year and every year aftesward from 30 to $100 worth ‘of produce. Christmas day oranges woro picked from the trees, and today in the eity of Sacramento thore are thousands of varicties of roses in full bloom.,” FOR THE e SAKE OF OLD TIMES. How the Circuit-Rider Respected the Memory of the Past. The days of moonshine whisky mak- ing down in the Ozarks are about over, says a writer ip the Free Press, but the natives in the southern tier of Missouri counties and those of the northern Ar- kausas group still have a kindly feeling for the days when even the preachers— circuit-riders down there—indulged in making “pine top.” It was at the house of one of these good men that we stopped for the night not over two years ago, and before going to bed in the loft the question of moonshine whisky making was brought up by the old host. e felt around very carefully for awhile, and finally, after feeling assured that we were not hostile to the memory of the old days, he ventured: “An’ [ argies,” he said, ‘‘that hit’s all right ter make erleetle whisky fer home purposes.” We agreed that there was certainly nothing morally wrong in such a pro- ceeding, wlthough the law was clearly against it. “I uster make er leetle, strangers,” he said, “an’ I never felt no oneasiness of mind erbout hit.” “A good man like you should have fear on that score,” ponse. “Yordon't think so,” he returned. “‘Bless yer fer thet. The day after thoir arrival thoy started together, the bride wishing to'do some Thoy were not too happy, for an old lover of the girl lad, by werely a cofncidence, gone up on' the samo train, and by another coincidence had stopped at the same hotel. The bride, perhaps feeling a littlo sorry for him, had foolishly exorted herself to be dleasant, and the result was that the husband, who is naturally vory jealous, allowed unworthy suspicions " to enter his mind, As they walked along market street the ex-rival passed them, and the hus- band was irritated by the gracious salus tation his wifo gave. However, he on- deavored to cheer up, and when thoy reached a large dry goods store, where his wifo of two days intended o pur- chase some stufl toadorn herself with, he pulled out his pocketbook and handed it to her, and told her to go ahead and purchase whatover sho wished. Sho was not to be found. 1le started to go up to tho upper floor on the elevator, but was met by aboy stationed_there, who ex- plained that something had just broken about the machinery, and ‘the car was stuck fast up against the roof,so he went upstuivs and hunted thoroughly but fruitlessly. As he came down he thought he saw his former vival ahead of him, but the crowd was so great he could nod be sure. It made him foel uncusy and he began inquiring of the clerks, At last he found one who remembered sell- ing a lot of goods to a lady who answered his wifo’s description, and who had or- dered them delivered at the hotel he was staying at, so thore was no doubt about her identity. The clork knew nothing elseabout her. Another rch of the establishment resulted in nothing, Perhaps she had missed him in the crowd and gone back to the hotel. He jumped into & eab and drove there post linste, to find that she had not returned. By this time he began to get wild with worry and sus- picion. The presence of thit hated ex- lover at the store, his wife's suaden dis- appearance, all suggested horrible ideas to him. Two hours had passed and no trace of her, Ho hurried w the police headquarters and told his story. A big detective, to whom he talked, smilod pityingly athimand at once accepted the elopement theory. Officers were sent out to find the detestable wretch who was_suspected of having wrecked the budding happiness of two souls, The husband wandered frantically up and down the streets, until ho found that unwittingly, he had walked back to his hotel, He was weary, and mechanically took the clevator up to his room.
