THE OMAHA DAILY BEE:-BRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 1801 THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS. Bhort 8:11ing and 8pring Weathor Will Come to an End Togather. WHEAT BEARS DO SOME BOLD SELLING. Corn Has Less Rallying Power Than Wheat--Good Business in Oats on a Decline—Oattle and Hogs, ‘/1110AGO, Jan. 16.~[Spocial Telegram to Tie EE])-There was no specifil feature to the early business on changa. There wasan ab- sence of fmportant nows and of outside busi- ness. First pricos were steady all around in sals, and hogs opened higher on light ro- celpts and higher prices at the yards Tho end of the first hour found all the markets heavy and at lower prices. Two things became quite apparent {nwheat today; there must soon bo an end Lo the tre- mendous short selling by cortain parties, and an end to the springlike weather. The signal service indicates that both may terminate In less than twenty-four hours, when an ex tlonally cold wave is expected tosweon the bare wheat flelds In many states. The selling of wheat today wasof u bold charac- ter by the bears and rather discouraged ing out by many bulls, It leaves the market in shape for a violent reaction of the weathor and other conditions change materlally. The action of the market was a dragging, heavy ono. May started Yo up at barely touch 05%c, sold off to ©64e. rencted slightly, und then went off to 060 with a recovery later to 95¢ at which point. the market was pegged at 1 o'clock with little doinz, Liverpool eables wero quictand stoady. Bilverlegislation had no effect. Buffalo ro- ported a heavy absorption of whoeat by tho millers. Country polnts reported local mill- ors drawing freoly on the stocks. Indiana re- ported the fields in bad shape tor extreme cold weather. re was a very boarlsh dispateh from Olymipla, Wush., glving the stato yield of wheat 27,000,000 Instead of 8,000,000 us given by the government. No one believed such stufl. The bearlsli feature of the day, hoy: ever, was the continuation of the liberal re- celpts as the northwestern markets. Even the bulls concede that the Dodge figures for the northwest were too smull to correspond With the receipts. Export clearances wor small with but 1500 bushels of wheat trom three ports and a moderato quantity of flour from New York and Baltimore. Theselling forthescason was led by Pardridge, Far- num, Sehwartz, Poole, Lindvloom and Logan. Buying on break was led by Lognm & Co, White & Co, and McCormick & Co. to cover. Mulr & Kam- meroralso bought. There was o little fm- provementin the feeling in wheat before the close with the lust sales of May at 96ic and anxlous buyers at that prico after tho elose. January was quoted at90ige to 9ke to8se to 8%c at the close. July sold ut 61%c and 91ic 10 01Y¢, elosing at O1ie. Cars for tomorrow, 87 On theeurb puts on Muy wheat wore ut WU@KC; onlls 0613@90% . There was a littlo rally from this when asecond dip put the price to 51%@ 6% c and the closo wasat 5325240 bid, Feb- ruary was quoted at 49%c and 48%c, clostng at die; July at 52%@5o and 524@52%¢, closing ub 6214@2%e: May corn, puts, were 51 calls, 024@ie. There was a pretty good business In oats and the market showed about the same de- cline as other murkets, The selling was led by Sibley. Tuttle, Furnum and and Schwartz. The buying was by Hutchinson, shorts and the country. The receipts were # curs over the estimate, at 183 cars, and for Eriduy 180 ears. May sales were at 45X@45¢, Glosing at #ige, or Jcunder last night. Junuary was at 4o tod2eto £24c: June, 4540 to Hde to Hi{e; July closed at 41ge. Thone ws from the stockyards was different this morning. Tho recoipts of hogs were less than 10,000 and prices up 10@15¢.
