8 CALDWELL 0N OIL INSPECTION. He Buggests fome Legislation Which He Believes to Be Necessary, CHARGED WITH WHOLESALE FRAUD. An Old Lady Grows Extravagant and Her Son Asks That a Guardian be Appoin ted—Other News About Lincoln, Laxcory, Neb, Dee. 10.—(Special to Tie Ber.]-Among the things that attracted the attention of some of the alliance delegates on the side whilo in the city was the matter of state oil inspection, Manry of them seemed to think that it was a useless piece of machinery that ought to be dispensed with, while others deemed it a necessary finstitution. Most of the alliance men laboved under the impi slon that the expenses of oil inspection were paid for out of the state funds, and this was prescuted as the main argument for the dis- continuance of the office by the coming legis- lature, Smith Caldwell, the oil inspector, and Coloncl Hoover of Blue Hill, one of the depu- ties, were at the state house this morning talking over the situation, and in_response to inquiries the inspector said: “The law in re- garJ to oil inspection went into effect July 1, 1887, ana ever since that time four deputies and myself have been actively engaged in the work. The office has paid its own expenses, the salaries of the chief and his deputies and paidfuto the state treasury the sum of $2,- 056.17, “During the twenty-three months ending December 1, 150, wo Favo inspected 280,053 barrels of coal oil and have paid to the stato treasurer the sum of 81,8 So you sec the office has not cost the people one penny directly, and yet coal oil has been cheaper than ever before, ““It would be a grave mistake to repeal the law governing the inspection of oils, If any change is made it should be to raise the test, which is much lower in Nebraska than in neighboring states. Also, the oil companies should be prevented from putting an nd on their barrels purporting to show grade is, as they alwa i grade. The reason that Mrs, Josephine McGraw trips about with such an elastic footstep is that she is no longer Mrs. McGraw, but Miss Josephine Smitia. Yesterday Mrs. McGraw told Judge Chapman in the district court what a horrid fellow her husband George was.
