A scheme to blow a safe at Holdrege, Neb, was discovered by the vigllance of Sherift O'Neill in watching the prisoners in the Council Bluffs il One of the prisoners, who gives his name as H, W, Hawloy, has lately been ing to fend some letters out of the jail tosome of his pals, These letters were seized, and_they contain some interest- Ing reading. Hawley was arrested here o few months ago, while in the very act of burglarizing Badollet's grocery store, on Broasdway Realizing ~ the fact that the evilence ngainst hiw was guch that he could not save bimseif, if tried in court, he began his ma- nipulations to escape justice in some other way. Inthe captured letters to his pal he reveals his pins confidentially,. He re- quested that his comrade procire for him two kinds of acid, which he said he needed to take the temper out of the steel bars. These bars he had examived evidently with the eye of an expert, and he expressed the opinion that they were not chilled. He wi very particularabout the kind of acids to be ot for him and described them minutely. 10 also wanted four saws, the description of ‘which healso gave in detail, and the make. He wanted them very fine toothed, as it was necessary to do the work quietly, In making the request of his friend to furnish him with hese means of escape he said that he could not hope to get cleared in court, and that he was in @& des- perate strait. He also outlined the manner n which the articles could be got to him. Toe saws were to be dlaced in a long plug of tobaceo, in which a hole had been bored to reciive them, Theacids weroto oe packed ina bag of smoking tobacco, Hedirected that the stamp over the mouth of the bag be steamed, so that it could be remove i breaking, then when the bottles were packe inside the stamp could be repliced, and thus no suspicion would arise. Hawley wrote many other interesting things, among which wcre his opinions of the Pottawattamie county jail, which hepronounced asanything but a delightful resort, under the present management, 05 it gave little opportunity for escape. He ofected strongly to the re- volving feature, as it revolved too often to permit him to work on_the bars, except at night, and then it was difficult to do such work without the nofse being heard. The most sensational revelation in the let- ters was the plan to.break intoa bank or loan office at Holdrege, Neb., He explained to his friend that he had intended to work this scheme himself, sos00n as he found a fellow o help him, but that whisky had upset his ?lunn. for while in Lincom, planning on this foldrege trip, he got full, and was hims “touched,” losing all his money. not been for his being short ho said he would not have thought of breaking into Badollet’s, for there wasn't enough in this jobto pay for the msk. He didn’t happen to como across anybodv _that he kiew, and thus not being able to get help he broke into this store, just to get a starterif he could, Situated ashe now was, there was no immediate prospect of his being able to work the job at Holdrege, and so he turnea itover to his friend, with such information as he had in the matter, and recommended that his friend work it. If he madea success and got the “stufl” he would expect to have apart of it, in return for the information thus given, If his friend could in this way raise him some money, before his time for trial came, ho might be able to fix some of the witnesses and thus get off. i not, he would have to RO across the' state. He erclosed a roughly drawn diagram, showing the location of several buildings and streets in Holdredge, accom- nied by a description of just whero the uilding stood and the location of the safe, which wero to be broken into, The safe was described with name of make, ete., and the assurance given that it would not take more than balf an hour ‘‘to kunock itoff.” The building referred to was but ene block from the depot, and diagonally opposite the hotel, and it was indicated on the map by the word “pox." He advised his friend 1o “clear your -hands of everything but the stuff itself,” and warned him not to attempt to carry any tools on himself. He further informed him that the man who owned the “‘box’’ boaght notes, ete., and that he kept from $1,500 to $2,000 in cash in the safe all the time. Hawley signed his name as ‘Red,” but gave striet instructions to his friend to write to hiniunder the name of Hawley. Hp said that letters going out of the jail were all ex amined, so he had to sneak these out, but let- ters coming to the jail were not opened, In one of these respects Hawley seems to have been a little mistaken, dnd the correspondence being officially captured, the **box’’ at Hol- dredge was not. worked, and the expected wealth did not come to his relief, Hawley's time for trial camo yestorday, and neither acid, money or saws had arrived. There seemed To way of escape, so ho pleaded guilty. and threw himself on the ten- der mercies of the court. His sentence will not b pronounced for s few days yet. el Gypsie carnival at Trimty fair Saturday night. ) ¥ine Holiday Present Evory parson in the city and surrounding country is invited to call and examine the fine line ot holiduy goods at the old rliable business house of 15, Burhorn, 17 Main stroct, Our Mottoes. “Tost Quality of Goods for the Lieast Money,” “Special Effort Mado to Please Every One,” **No Trouble to Show Goods and Give ' Prices,” “Prices to Suit the Times” “Live and Let Live." Terry, While Showing a Patent Fire- Escape, Falls Fifty Feet, CUT AND BRUISED, BUT NOT KILLED, H. H. Mawley, a Burglar in the County Jail, Had a Scheme—Boot- Leggers in Limbo—Levee Talk ~-Minor Mention, Yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock the peopleon the streets in the vicinity of No. 3 engine house on the corner of Main and Bry- ant streets were treated to a spectacle that caused checks to blanche and hearts to cease beating foran instant. From the top of the dizzy tower that over- looks the creck a man had suspended himself by asinglestrand of cord that loked to be about the size of binding twine. His feet were resting on the window sill of one of the little windows fifty-two feet above the pave- ment, He stood for several moments way- Ing bis hands and gesticulating. When the attention of everybody within sight had been attracted, the man stepped off from his frail pereh and began to descend, paying out the cord from one hand while waving the other, He went down slowly fora distance of two feet and then the cord snapped. He turned half w over, as he flashed downward like a meteor and struck on his heua and shoulders on o little shed roof al the foot of the tower and disappeared from sight, Instantly a great crowd collected. The door to theshed w as locked by a padlock and one of the firemen had the only key. It was hurriedly procured and the door opened, Instead of iading the man crushed beyond recognition, they found him sitting up rub- bing hig head aud looking around in 4 dazed sort of manner, ‘The nnfortunate man was J. C. Tervy of Tyndall, S. D. Heisin the city for the pur- pose of exhibiting a patent fire escape, a sim- ple device known as the Haight éscap in- vented by a South Dakota man, Mr. Terry has been engraged by Haight to go around the country and exhibit his escape. IIe arrived in the city Monday afternoon, and yesterday he exhibited his appa us at the fire houses. He concluded that the high tower of No. 3 offered as fine an opportunity as could be desired to exhubi the lifesaving device, and at 3§ he ] ched the book to the window sill of the upver window. The apparatus used was a little model intended to show the principle and was not designed for use. [t consisted of ufriction block avout two_inches square, which is less than half the size of the article intended for actual use. Iustead of a rope such as commonly used, he had run a com- mon sash cord throagh the block and aesired to show that even with that little aevice, small enoueh to be carried in a man’s pocket, he could safely make the descent from a tall building,. When he threw his weight upon the cord way where it run across the sharp corner of the window silland let him falla distance of fifty reet he ouly thing that saved him from instant death was theshed roof, which was com- posed _of inch lumber grooved together, Vhen hestruck the spring of the lumber partially broke the force of his fall, Nine of the boards six inches wide were broken to- gether with the 2x4 scantling that supvorted them. Immediately beneath him in the tool shed was several large coils of wire that had been unbound, and these helped to break the fall by acting like a spring mattross, The mar was helped outand was able to walk into the engine house. Dr. Cleaver was called by telephione and rendered him medical service. His face was badly cut and bruised and there was scarcely 4 point where the end of a finger could be placed that did not show an abrasion of the skin, One finger on theleft hand was broken, as was also one of the floating ribs. These, with the exception of a scalp wound an inch long, were the extent of his injuries unless some internal wouble de- velops that. is not now apparent, * Mr. Terry is ap| uruml{ a very in- telligent man of Bt thirty-five years of age He explains that the ac- cidlent was due to the _deception practiced upon by a merchant in_Neola, Ia., of whom he purchased the roll of sash cord. Heis nearly blind and could not. see that the ord was thin and not what he asked for. He says be has frequently made descents of 100 with & common sash cord, Porry was formerly 8 physician, but was compeiled to abaudon practiceon fccount of failing cyesight. The only thing he seems to suffer from at the present time is the chagrin over the failure of hisfire escape to work properly. Toconvince the reporters that it was perfectly safe and reliable he was very anxious to muke another descent, crippled as he was, asking only te be assured that he be given apieceof sish cord that was not rot- ten. He was dissuaded from making another attempt upon the pledge of the reporters that he sbould be given a uare deal,” The Greatest Offer of the 19th Century At the hook department of the Boston store, Fotheringham, Whitelaw & Co, Council Bluffs, Ia. He told contradictory stories about where he stole the harness, numing Omaha and South Omaha. A tele phone message was sent to the Omabia ofil- cers and during the afternoon Vaughan came over. The theft of aset of harness had been reported by a grader living near South Omaha, and when the detective questioned the boy'and described the locality where the theft had beer committed he con- fessed and gave the officer all the details. He ed a willingness to accompany the ve_across the river and volunteered to assist in earrying the big load of leather, and they left the station bearing the burden be- twéen them.
