Isaac Schneider, an intelligent man of twenty years of ageof No 1001 Third avenue, called at the New York World office the other day and told a story which strikingly illustrates the savage intolerance of the Russian government. He has been in this country about four years and had so far made his way in the face of adverse circumstances, *‘My father,” said he, ‘Marcus Schneider, was engaged as a commission merchant in St. Petersburg and was in comfortable circumstances. At one time he was a millionaire, aud was one of the most influential men among his people in the city. He lived in the city twenty-five years, and raised a family of eight children, of whom T am the oldest. I received a let- ter from him about four months ago, in which he told me that a law had gone into effect which forbade a Hebrew to live in any large city under the Russian government, especially St. Petershurg and Moscow. The letter further stated that he bad been notified to leave the city within thirty days. He did not know where to go or what to .do, and asked me for advice, I 'wrote & letter to Charles Emory Smith, United Statesminister to Russia, who lives on Moskowsky Yliza, just one door from my father’s residence, asking him to assist my family if possible or in- form me in what way I could do some- thing for them. I received no reply to that letter. Yesterday I got a letter from my mother telling me of my father’s death and the banishment of herself and my brothers and sisters from their home. ‘‘When my father received the order of banishment he was in a hopeless con- dition and not knowing where to go he did not heed it. After the Lhiafi dn\xs had passed he was ar- res and thrown into prison. The horror of his situation threw him into a sickness which caused his death in two days. My mother and her children, the youngest of whom is only six months of age, were then dressed in prison garb, and, in charge of soldiers, were sent to a little town 500 miles away. One-half of that distance they v.ore compelled to walk. They are there now, without any friends to help them, and in a starving cundition,” it e A Light in Every Berth, ‘To the Chicago, Milwaukee & St: Paul railway belongs the credit of being the first in the country to reduce the matter of electric lighting of trains to scientific rfection. One of the novel features introduced in the sleeping cars is a patent electric reading lamp in each sec- tion. With this luxurious provision, reading at night before and after retir- ing becomes as comfortable as by day, and when retiring the toilet may be made in comfort and seclusion. "i‘hs berth reading lamp in the Pullman sleeping cars run_on the Chicago, Mil- waukee & St. Paul railway, between Omaha and Chicago, is pafented and cannot be usedeby any other railway company, It is the greatest improve- ment of the age. DESTLEN EE ONE WAY TO STEAL DIAMONDS A Trick That Admits of the Thief Safely SBubnutting to Be Searched. It is natural that articles of great value are objects of temptation, says the Jeweler’s Weekly. We are prepared to understand that the common thief is con- stantly scheming to gain possession of precious stones and jewelry, but it is o matter of surprise to learn, through stories that come from across the ocean, | of the tricks indulged in there by the diamond trade—the legitimate, every- day dealers in precious stones. The peculiarity of this condition of things is that the sharp practice of dealers does not involve their reputation orstanding, ‘the thing being looked nt ag a matter of shrewdness und rathor admired as s clever piece of business. An anecdote is related to illustrate this. A dealer called upon a firm with whom he was in the habit of transacting busi- ness and asked to see a lot of dinmonds. After examing them for some time he returned the paper, saying that he would | call again in reference to buying them. It was at once noticed that a large stone was missing. A hasty search was made, but no trace of the aiamond being dis- covered, the dealer, without more ado, was accused of having taken the brilliant, He indignantly denied the charge and submitted without hesitation to being searched, The stone was not found, and profuse apologies were offered for the false ac- cusation. The following day the dealer u};p&mrud again, this time with a paper of dinmonds to sell, but also with another object in view, which he took good care not to disclose. A careful observer might have noticed that while the stones were being examiced atthe light ho ran his fingers along the under surface of the portion of the counter where he sat, and picked off something that stuck to the wood. It was nothing more nor less than the diamond which had so mysteriously disappeared the duy before. He had fastened it to the counter by means of a piece of wax with which ho had provided himself, and on the occa- sion of his second visit secured his booty. i As you like it.
