After her talk with that legal light, the lawyer went to the woman’s husband and let him understand that for 3100 she would leave him for ever andallow him the privilege of getting a divoree from her. % Poor Nathan Clough was evidently glad enough to get rid of the shrew but he didn't have the $100, So ke went to his brother, the hotel keeper, and asked him forthe money. As usual the cash was forth- coming, and Mrs, Nathan Clough, taking what, was left after the att got his share, left the country. But she never forgave ‘Warren for taling the t of his brother, Warren and Nathan Clough, as intimated, were not only closely allied by fraternal, but also business relations, and on April 25, 1875, Nathan came to Seward t consummate some business contract. By this Warren was to give his brother Nathan $1,000, Everything was arvanged satisfactorily and Warren gave his older brother a check on the bank forjthe amount. This was on Thursday. Nathan lmul aoout §300 of this money toa mau named Bignall, He lingered in Seward for a fow days, stopping at the hotel ran by his brothe In'tne loft over the stable was a bed chambe and Nathan i on sleeping there, 50 as tobe on hand in case anything happeved to the horsgs. Warren humored him in the whim, although he informed him that he was welcome to the best bed in the house, On Saturday night when he went to retive Warren (' i, the landlord, noticed his clerk, Ch Wilcox, and a4 man named Jack Trent, in whispered cousultation, but thought nothing of it. That night Nathan Clough, Warren's brother, was murdered, The next morning when Warren came into the dining room he expected tosee his brother aiting nearly hallan hour e him and he failed to_appear Warren de- cided to go to the barn to wake himup. The hostler said that Nathan had not yet come down from the loft and Warren climbed the ladder leading up to the chambier to awaken him. Warren's call failed to arouse Nathan, and he went up to shake the apparently drowsy brother, Then o ghastly sight © met his gaze. Mis brother wi stark aud cold and the mark of some blunt instrument on the tem- ple of the murdered man told the story of the midnight assault. The sudden taking off of hisbrother almost crazed Warren, and for weeks he scemed to be in & dazed condition. The murderof Nathan Clough was a ten days’ wonder in Seward, and at the end of that time Wurren was astonished to find him- self arrested on the charge of butchering his brother for a few hundred dollars! Before this the wife of Nathan Clough, who had de serted her husbund, appeaved on the scene, and it appears thatshe had never forgotten her enmity toward Warren for taking the part It is bel ithat ina great ure her voluble tongue and bitter de- aused Warren's arvest, and when igned on the charge of murder so wftamed the community against her brother-in-law that the jury try- ing him did not dare to bring in a verdict of acquittal . A ingly they decided to com- promise with public opinion and instead of bringing in a verdict that would hang the prisoner they returned one that would spare his life, but would make him a convict for life. It was months before Clough could re- alize that he was actually an outlaw. Af Warren's arvest it was noticed that x, the hotel clerk, and his chum, Jack Trent, were both unusually flush with mone Warren begged of the officers 10 hold these fellows until after the trial, but they retused to doso and before Clough was both Wilcox and Trent ned, It was carned after their departure that on the night of the murder both these fellows had Leen up until after midnight, and that their actions had otherwise been suspicious, But no attention was paid o this, Public indignation was very high over the murder, aud as the popu- sentiment seemed in favor of makig a vegoat of Warren Clough, he was con- edd and sent to the penitentiary for life. A decade and a half of years have slipped away und the village of Seward is blossom- ing into & prosperous young ¢ The old settlers who were leading a precarious exist- ence fifteen vears ago are today men of wealth and influence. ~But the most prosper- ous of them all in those early days has been leading a living death and his name is almost forgotten by those who in carly days were glad to receive a favor at bis bunds, Your correspoudent irem.cnhy went to the penitentiary to see this aged prisoner and was astonisied to find not & cold-visaged, atle tal brutal looking felon, but a kindly appeai y WEMG t bis spirits were almost broken handsome, gentlemanly old man, ln couversation ke still protested his iuno n, “that is of his brother mea showed ti views on the question, but they should not do 50 as leaders. ““Another reason is this, it is a political battle, althougn a bloodless' one, and & man who goes out to nurse the sick should not fight against. either side.” Dean Gardner of Trinity cathedral, said: ST have not seen the resolution but h neard of it, and havo nothing to do with it. I have seen and read the resolution of the ministerial unjon and have thought a great deal about it, but T shall not observe November 2 as a field day for the prohibitory amendment, nor shall 1 take up a collection for campaign’ expenses. 1 believe 1 can do more us a Christian minister by preaching the gospel tomen and salvation through Christ than posmg as a politican in the pulpit, as proposed in the resolution with reference to November 2. Newton W. Mann said: not observe November 2 as a day set aside to preach politics from the pulpit, 1 have not as yet decided whether oruot 1 shall speak on the subject of temperauce on that day. It is entirely foreign toour belief that we should follow the course laid down in the resolutions of the so-called ministerial uuion, as I am not connected with it and have nothing in common with it, and consequently suall take no cognizance of its actious, shosdadsn (8 Dr. Birney, nose and throat, Bee bldg.
