6 THE OMAHA DAILY BE 1894, 16, I THURSDAY, OCTOBER, to the taxpayers, tho money having been raised by the police force at their recent ball The chief’s office is located in the southeust corner of the building, and is small but neat and convenient and overlooks the street from the large valcony windows. Back of the chief's office is & comfortable private room, where conferences of o private and important nature can be carried on in positive seclusion, The captain’s ofice is conveniently located an dis casy aceess from the headof the stuirs, This office und the sergeant’s office will be open night and day. Backof it is a private room for the use of these oficers, In the rear of the building oceupy about one-half of the floor is the gene headquarters for the patrolmen, It is o large, airy, well lighted room, with twenty- two lockers arranged around the walls, each with a 1ock and key, where cach patrolman can hang s hat, “coat, belt and what other portion of his uniform is desived to be left in the building when not in use while the officer is off gduty. Each lockerhas asingle ke) which 18 carried only by the ownerof the uniform. The door leading into this room from the ball is protected by a spring iock, for which each patrolman carrles o ey, ‘This room will ouly be ovened at voll call, mornings and evenings. In a convenient niche between the windows will be a large {;Ivr glass, where the patrolmen can adjust heir uniform before forming in line to mavch on the street for duty, This floor will be finished in hard oil, but it will probably be covered with mutting to make it wore choer- ful. It is the desire of the chief and tho members of the force tohave another ball and raise money enough to procure libra for this room, to include all the books sul ablefor the instruction of the men in the dis- obarge or their duties that can be obtained. ‘There is apparently nothing more to be de- sired in the arrangement and furnishing of the rooms. The fact i1s quite prominent that Council Bluffs has the finest, most convenient modern police headquarters of any city in the west. There is some complaint about the charac- ter of the woodwork that has been done, and it is apparently well founded, and will prob- ably be the means of a good deal of discussion in the council when the fiual estimates come up for allowance. Judd, president, 606 roadway ler, made the claim that it was the result of a litle “monkey work’ on the part of the drivers of Belgian Maid and Dimple, On the homestretch it was neck and neck be- tween the Maid and Dick, aud when the hor ame under ihe wire the little Maid's nose was just far enovgh ahead to win first place for ber, Diok was an casy second, Saturnel third, Kenneth fourth, Bro- cade fifth, Clemmy € 'sixth and Airy Wilkes once more seventh. It was a beautiful heat, with all the horses fiuishing in a bunch) Time —2:35! The free-for-all stallion race was next called. There were five entr but Strath- lun, & Kansas City horse, was withdrawn, The purse was #00, and the race was for Dlood. There was mo_occasion for jockeying, for the owner of every horse wanted the best record possible. Frank 2., owned by W, J. Perry, Wayne, Neb., drew the pole, Ensign, owned by R. A. Lomax of Lomax, liL., second, Guelph, by A, T, Tur- ney, Red Oak, la., third, and Cowmbination, a handsome brown animal owned by Nat Bowen of Buelington, Iu, fourth. The hol went off on the third score all squat ubreast of each other, us pretty a start «s could be made, but they had not turned the second quarter pole until Frank P. was lead ing the procession. On the second quarter he broke and Ensign took first pl but he could only keep it until the three'quarter pole wie reached, whon Combination came up and passed him with o magnificent burst of speed. He kept the place until the turn was made on the home streteh, when Frank P agein took it by a neck, and as magnificent a race as was ever witnessed on the track was the result until the distance pole was reached, when Frank s driver urged him alittle too earnestly, and t Iying stallion broke and came in'on the dead run, and was set back to fourth place as a_consequence. En- sign came insecond and Guelph third. Time 4. It was aft 4 o'clock when the third heat called, and the horses ot d score in fi cheered by the shivering spectators, advanced from third to the first place before the quarter pole was reached, and without a skip or break maintained it until the finish, with Dick Dimple a dangerously close second, and Kenneth third. The remainder of the striug came in nearly abrest, but Brodeade was tinally given fourth plice, Clemmy C. Afth, Airy Wilkes sixth and Belgian Mad soventh. ~ There was an energetic kick from the managerof Alry Wilkes, who claimed fourth place but did nov get it, It was atter 5 o'clock when the second heat of the stallion trot was called, but still the crowd was kept warm eunough by their enthusiasm to keep up a deep interest in the result.
