Juilor Langdon wort dow on the same train to take into custody the man who 18 believed 0 be the cause of the poor girl's ruin. When the train arnved st DeWitt thousands of peopl were found waiting at the depot and the male portion of it was casting anything but friendly glances at Rickart, who was heavily iroucd and awaiting the arrival of the officer from Lincoln, Jailer Langdon quickly read the sentiment of the assemtled multitude und knew that as soou as those gathered were ap prised of the proof of Rickart’s suilt brought outat the inquest he would be lynched. He therefore quickly hurried Rickart ton fecight train lying on another track and few minute was stea towards Lincoln. A telegrum received from DeWitt today confivins Langsdon’s sus picions, for when the crowd learned of the testimony brought out against Riekart in the inquest there was o universil lamen tation that the fellow hid not been lynched before Lincoln ofiicer urrived. Langdou reached Lincoln with his prisonerat 2a, m. At 10a. m, he was ar raigned before Justico Brown. He could no longer deny that he and Miss Morford had for several nights occupied @ room together at Bill Stanuus’ den, but he attempted to throw the blame of. the girl's win on some fellow in Texas that nobody hus ever heard of. The judge listened to the fellow’s talo and cut him short by telliug him that he could appear for trial next Monday, and unless he could fumnish £500 bail he Would have togo to jail mean while. He could not furnish bonds, Bill Stannus and wife wore put nnder §100 bonds each. Today Attorney Strode ident fied Stannus as a fellow arrésted for forger two or three years ago. In addition to tnis crime it has been alleged that Stanuus eaused awoman toleave her husband to vecome his mistress after she had been married for seven- teen yoars, She was finally divorced from her husband, but did not marry Stannus un til & month ago, when the police discovered that they were living together in an unlawful state. Both Rickart and Stannus are about as tough looking specimens as ave to be found auywhere, and the great wonder is that as beautiful a girl us Mury Morford should be attracted by them. Hew youth and innocenc an the only exvlanations of the mystery. Stannus is very angry with the police for disclosing the fuct that heand Miss Morford were found oceupying the ch one night, but still will uot deny the charge in the presence of the officers, WINGER-GOODIY, J. NEWS, A Lawless Condition of Aair ing on Cut-Of Istand. Open rebellion, internicine strife, insur- rection, revolution, eiil war, and the whole fumily of verbs that denote action, aggressive and determined, were used in Justice Bar. nett’s court yesterday by the attorueys on both sides to describe the condition of affairs on Cut-Off island, a vagrant picce of ground that has been separated from Nebraska by the vestless curent of the Missouri river. While it has been separated from Nebraska, it has not been given tolowa, for a deep channel of muddy water divides it from the boundaries of serenc Hawkeyedom, but the main part of the channel of the river flows wes tof it and by common consent of the Douglas county authorities it has been aban- doned to the legal control of the Iowa officers, When the river cut it off from Nebraska jurisdiction and hemmed itin on all sides a number of gentlemen conceived the idea that by the act of providence, through the i strumentality of the Missouri river, the land upon it reverted to the United States and s subject to the pre-cmption and home- stead laws. Tt had for years been regarded us valueless and its original owners had neg lected to pay the n it, and‘the descrip- a great dealof it had been lost or stricken from the recorder’s books. They consequently took possession of it under the homestead and pre-emption laws, and several of them, among whom is Dr. Jeffries of this city, have per 1 their titles to it and still retuin possession ef some very valusble islands, which have been drained ad made tillable' by the change in the channel of the Existe steaders or squatters have sold their titles 0 an ovganization in Omaha known as the Omaha land and improvement company, and they bavea large force of men i pr postession of the islind. Among them is fenry Coombs, a very intelligent color man, who, while being unable to either or write even his own name, has show wimirable ability to take care of himself und his_interests. A few days since the improvement company’s forces were sct to work to build a fence'through the center of Coombs’ land. _ The colored Napoleon came to Council Bluffs and filed an iufor uation in Bamett's court, charging them with mali- clous trespass, and two constables were sent down to wrest Buck Keith, the leader, and a v jwd of them, They were brought iuto the court and gave satisfactory bonds for their appearance last A\mmdfi. Coombs and the main body of the colored army were hiding in the brash at the other end of the feld, and when the attack was made on the skirmish line and the attention of the officers was required to preserve the peace at that point, Coombs and his_men swept down upon the fence and gathered it up in sections and | seattered it over the face of the carth, and | before the enemy realized what had hap: pened the last panel was razed to the groun A general rough and tumble fizht thon fol lowed, which the oMeers claimed the uld only quell by arresting Coombs and his men The whole army was captured by the minions of the law without resistance.
