Early in 1361 he oined General (now Governor) Thuyer's reg- ment, the First Nebraska, and participated in the battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh. Benton was horn at New Haven, Conn., on October 17, 1858, being thirty years two months and sixteen days ald when he ook the oath of oftice for his first term.
