C. A. Hastings, a western merchant, who dined at the Palmer the other even' ing, told a Chicago Tribune reporter a story at the expense of an Bnglish nob man who wus in this country lust year. “Lord Wynford stopped at North Platte, Neb.,” rclated Mr. Hastings, He the wild “during his tour of the praivic seemed greatly pleased with west and intimated that he would like to invest some money in something There was a smart young I Taw) in the town whose parents had had some unpleasant dealings with Lord Wynford in the old country. *This young lawyer had lived in North Platte about two years. He came there to examine claim he had purchased on puper, To his disappointment his farm was nothing but a paririe dog town, *You could not raise even sage brush on the elaim, so elose together were the burrows of the little animals., He had about given up all hopes of disposing of his land when he arned that Lord Wynford was looking for a good invest- ment. Then he called upon the weakthy foreigne id offered for sale what ho called ‘the most profitable investment in Amerien.” Heo told the British lord that he had ‘been ten years blishing a mink farm and justas the prise was te beginning to” coig money he was obliged to go south on account of his poor health. Ho explained how the minks were raised, how their skins were disposed of, and the great demand for mink fur in this country, The young Wynford to Irishman pledged Lord ry nothing A A R farm | was only known to a few who were in | similar enterprises, Then he drove his guest out to the prairie dog farm. | *Hero an extensive tract of land desti tute of troes and alive with little ani wals #at burrowed in the grouund and | barked like & small dog was thoroughly inspected. The possibilities of furnish- ing the west with mink fur in tho aue tumn delighted Lord Wynford and ro turning to the city he gave $500 for the dog town. He owns it now and the good- for-nothing place is called “‘the lovd's mink farm.” - ‘“That tireu feoling” s entirely overcome by Hood's Sarsaparilla, which gives a feeling of buoyancy and strength to the whole system —— THE STORY OF A DIAMON How It Traveled the Rounds and Brought Joy and Sorrow. The family of ex-Mayor Wade of Cloveland might tell a story of the ad- ventures of a diamond which would dis- close u curious phase of Now York lifo, says a dispateh to the Globe-Democrat, Mis. Wado while in this city in April, lost a diamond from an ear-ving. Tho pair of stonos had cost her $3,000, The stone lost was found in n croviee in n stroet crossing at Fourth ave- nuo and Twentioth street by Mrs, Bernard Horan of Scarsborough. Mrs, Horan made no secrot of her luck. Among her neighbors is a family whoso son is employed as a clerk in the grocery of A Kehoo at Sixteenth street and First avenue. Shortly after she found the stone the clerk called on her to say that the owner had turned up and would give 8170 to have it vestored to him. She delivered it to the clork, who in due time paid her the money. A’ pub- lished paragraph stating the fact of the finding of the diamond, and reporting that its owner had recovered it, was brought to the attontion of a son of Mr: Wade, from whose carving it had been lost, As he was in this city purposely to try to recover the stone, and had failed, hé naturally traced the paragraph to its source. He learned from Mrs. Horan that she had recoived money as o re- ward from Mr. Kehoe's clerk, and of course supposed that the rightful owner had the diamond. Mr. Wade sought Mr. Kchoo and eventually recovered the stone. From all accounts he had a havd time of it. How much it cost him in ad- dition to his trouble is not clenr. But ho has written to Mrs. Horan, advising her not to return the $170 under any circum- stances, for she, at least, had been honest in the matte Mr. Kehoe tells a singular story con- corning the diamond. He saw the adv tisement at about the time that he heard through his clerk of Mrs. Horan’s find. Not wishing to anything to do with the matter Irimself, but wishing to help poor Mrs, Horan, and to help also w riend of his, he advised his friend to write to Mrs. Wade. He says that in ro- ply Mr. Wade offercd §200 for the recov- ery of the stone. Kehoe says that the next he knew of it his friend sent him 175, of which he gave $5 to his clork ind sent the balance to Mrs. Horan, Not hearing again from his friend, and supposing of course that Mr. Ward had the stone and the friend $25 for hi: trouble, Kehoe was annoyed to receive a call from Mr Ward, who wanted the stone. Kehoo tried to find his friend, but could not. He says that he gave Mr. Wurd referenc and assurcd him that the stone would surely turn up as soon as ho could find his friend, and failing to find the friend he (Kehoe) would be responsible for tho value of the stone. Mr. Wade does not, appear to have been specially improssed by Kehoe's philanthropic avowals. He scems to have heen disposed, indeod, to call in the police. It is said that he did actually consult Inspe Byrn When Mr. Wade had thus far Kehoe had found his friend, who had been off on a spree, but heing an honest man he had held on faithfully to the diamond. What arrangement the friend and Mr. Wade made befc the stono was restored Kehoo professes not to know, He is merely content in the consciousness that he was an humblo agent in bringing the Wade family again into its own. e Burdock Blood Bitters taken after eating will relieve any feeling of weight or over fuluess of the stomach.” Sold everywhere. e he Delightful Summer the East.
