George F\. ht, secretary of the electric motor com- v, yesterday afternoon ly, “I don't think we will, 'I'hol: or less work to be done, and it includes the laying of some new tr but it will all be in the nature of repairs. The Broadway line above the Methodist church will have to be relaid, as the flat rails that were in use when the old horse cars were running were not taken up when the changeto an_ electric road was made, and remained theee ever since. They enough to staud the motor will have to be taken up und replac rails this summ The T Fifth avenu a little out of shap also have to be fixed up. The improvem on that line, however, will be temporary, as it is not a permanent ' line. It was built to connect with the transfer, and will be com- pavatively useless after that is abandoned for the new tnion depot. on ns, woe will take up the track on Twenty-first street, but will continue to operate the line on Fiftn nue, which will be extended northwest ss the bottoms to the east end of the bridge, and will help settle up that part of the city. We will run_into the new union depot, and will build a line down Ninth avenue for that purpose. 1f we ever cross the Union Pacific bridge this is the time that would be extended for that purpose.” “Is there any probability that such a line will be builg ““Well, I think that if it ever does happen, the line will belong to our company. This ¢ company that Judge James wus trying time ago to build a line over the Union Pucific bridge and reduce the fare 5 cents hasn't mnmmlml to anything so > have no fear of the g intention. Judge James hasn’t to put into anything of that on 't expect to sco lhl Omaha 3 gy vith the ne, even if t been asserted. We have a direct line between the two and they would have a round- about one. If they were to build it and re- duce the fare, we would of course have to do the same, v couldn’t expect to get over alf of the travel, and that would not be a ing investment for them. If the tri was divided up between two companies nt it wouldn't pay either of ther so we dow't believe any other com- ny - will make ny = such move. 1t & month ago the Union Pacific folks susa proposition to run a line across their bridge, and also take the Union line from Br were willing to do it if they would give w line to South Omaha. Théy were favoral inclined, as they wanted to”discontinue th suburban service, and wanted us to take it off their hands. Matters went along this way until the Boston folks came ot and they looked the ground over carefully, but thought that they couldn’t furnish a South Omaha line, as their trackage facilities were rather crowded, and would be even more 5o now that the Roclk Island and Milwaukee have closed contracts with them to cross the bridge and run into South Omaha over their tracks. That was the end of it and the matter has been allowed to drop. If we could et to South Omahia we would_perhaps build such a line over the Union Pacific wagon bridge, but unless we could go there it would be use- less to cross the bridge, as there is nothing to go-for and the tine would not pay; still, as said before, if a line is built L thiuk our ¢ v will build it.” What is the present prospect for a re- duced fare The ny has not considered the mat- at an, i lately, but personally I am ror or ]l\Hnn)( on 4 reduced rate for commutation t. I would the ticket good for any member of a m family, for we would get_pay for the r and lic ought to have the beriefit of the ticket. It might be difficult to keep track of all the members of his family, and it might be ne ry to restrict the tickets to the individual, Which'is what some of the roads do. One was settled in four or fiww:\ but the other is perennial, New York gets bigger and bigger out over more territor wideawake small boy in town s all about it. He doesn’t need any wae maps to show him where the various strongholds ave. If he had maps the, would be of little use to him, for before he could master them he would be pretty sure to stumble into the very midst of the enemy and subsequent i family an opportunity for v tice in first aid to the unjured. Strategy plays an important part in the battles of the small boy, and among other things he learns how to pass h the enemy’s country in safety— valuable bit of knowledge, too, when the family grocer or butcher hap: pens to have his establishment in a hos- tile distriet. A Times reporter a day or twoago had a chance to see how the wily boy does this. The reporter was walking up Univer- ty Place from Washington purk, when suddenly he became aware that a hoy was trudging along by his side. The youngster’ scomcd to “have come up through the sidewalk—probably he had emerged from a convenient areaway— but, at all events, there he was, a by looking, well dressed, active boy, small package under one bundle gave proof Hm.-im he was on some household errand. In this fashion they traxeled on block Two or three partic y in the street scrutin closely. They seemed to have a desire to get at the boy, but apparently they were satistied that an attack would not be politic under the civeumstunces, By the time Tenth street was reached the reporter began to wonder if his small companion had decided to attach himself to him permanently. A retinue is not always desirable, and what was worse, two or three other youngsters had fallen into the procession. keeping twenty or thirty feet in the rear, ho ever, Half way between Tenth and Eleventh the following party stopped. seemed to have come to some di- viding line across which they had no business to pass. There they stood. though, with very much the air an in- dustrious cat assunies when a mouse has slipped into a hole just in time to avoid contact with feline claws, As soon us they halted the youth with the bundle seemed to lose all interest in their doings. At Eleventh street he suddenly left the reporter’s side. He ran across the street ut full speed, stopped at the cor- ner, and, turning around to face the other poys, made a gesture which was 50 full'of dervision that his pursuers must have felt disgusted with life for half an hour. Then he trudged blithely away up the side street.
