Congressman Connell's Views on the Tariff, the Postoflice and New Fort. Hon. W. J. Connell says that he took ads- vantage of the time that will be devoted in congress to tavift debatrs to come home and look after private busiuess requiring his per- sonal attention. Regarding the tariff bill under considera- tion he thinks that after a few modifications have been mado in some of its provisious it will certainly pass and become a law. “Tam satisfied,” continued Mr. Connell, “that’it will mect the wants of the people and be satisfactory to all sections. Since the duty hus been taken off of sugar this bill is cntirely satisfactory to me. For a long time, owing to the interest that is being taken in the culture of sugar beets I considered that Nebraska interests might be greatly injured by the bill, but in view of the proposed govert- t bounty on that industry the law will meet all requirements and be even more satis- factory than the duty. As an item of con- sumption, sugar, I think affects the people at, large more than any other. As it has pussed the point of luxury” and become a uecessity the tax was burdensome to the poor classes, “You want to know something about tho condition of matters relating to Omaha's pro- posed new postofice buildingt Well, work on the plaus " is delayed temporarily until a tender of the awards has been made, and no- t effect has been given the super- hictect by the departmeut of jus- “I called at the ofice of the supervising architect just before leaving Washington, and he assured me that he would proceed with tho plans just as soon as a tender has been mado vesting the title to the property in the gov- ernment. There will be a del 'y in ad- dition to that alveady paid by the sign- rs of the bond amounting to $1,000 or more, exclusive of any expegse incurred by the commissioners for disbursing the fund to property owners. This, however, will not deluy proceedings, as the secretury of ‘the treasury and attorney geneval will look to the bordsmen to make it up.” Mr. Connell thinks that much of this difi- culty will be disposed of within the next two weeks and feels confident ulso that grownd can be broken and the foundation put in next fall, “The Fort Omaha matter remains statu quo. ‘The law provides that only one-third of © appropriation can be used in purchass ing a site. The expenditure already estimated exceeds that amount about £4,000, therefore the government s holding back becauses this deficit exists, Owners of the progerty must maké that good. As LT, Clarke is the largest owner, naturally Uncle Sam looks to him. 'I'he quar: termuster gencral was preparing i statemeut when I came away which he expected to turn in very soon.” Mr. Connell thinks that congress will comns plete its lubors and adjourn about the middle of July. There arc a great many pension and public building and local bills ponding, but they will never see the light of day, Speaking of pension agitation, ho declared that the western states ought W feel well satisficd with what they ave gotting. “The south is justificd to some extent in vaising objections to further ponsion legiss lation because hardly a dollar of the vastsimn distributed goes to that section, The castérn states are nearly us bad off for tho reason that o great mujority of their old soldiers bave come west und allowed foreiguers to succeed them. Nobraska, Kansas, lowa and Dakota get the bulk of this monoy. “Judge Groff, said the congressman, ‘i3 making a splenaid record as commissioner of the land department, He is well liked by every one who has any dealings with bim, 1 have heard soveral members of the house speak in very high terms of the judge.” Fits, spasms, St. Vitus dance, nervousness and hysteria are soon cured by Dr. Miles!
